South Africa: Foul smell in Cape Town

A foul odour in the South African city of Cape Town is believed to have been caused by a ship loaded with livestock that arrived at the port on Sunday evening.

Residents of the city and its suburbs suspect the cause of the odour. The City of Cape Town said on X Account that it was aware of the odour and confirmed that it was coming from the ship.

Zahid Badruddeen, the city’s water and sanitation official, said the ship carrying livestock was scheduled to leave the port on Monday night.

He previously said that the “sewage odour that pervades parts of the city” was not related to the city’s Koeberg sewage pumping station.

Some South Africans have taken to social media to express concern about the condition of the livestock on board, while others wonder what will become of the people on board.

According to local reports, the incident occurred when ships transporting livestock to Western countries were diverted through the South African coast due to recent attacks in the Red Sea.
