Indian Railways has ordered an investigation after a freight train travelled more than 70 kilometres without a driver.
A video shared on social media showed the train passing several stations at high speed.
The train reportedly left Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir without a driver on Sunday and was headed to Hoshiarpur district in Punjab.
According to the railway, the train stopped, but no one was injured.
Officials told the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency that the incident occurred between 7:25 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. local time (1:55 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. GMT) on Sunday.
The 53-passenger train was on its way from Jammu to Punjab when it stopped at Kathua for a crew change.
According to officials, after the driver and his assistant got off the train, it began to descend the slope of the railroad tracks.
The train was travelling at a speed of almost 100 km/h and it managed to pass about 5 stations before stopping.
Immediately after officers were alerted to the train, they closed off a railroad crossing along the route.
“The train was stopped after railway officials placed wooden blocks on the tracks to stop the train,” an official told PTI.
Wooden blocks helped slow down the train.
Officials told PTI that they are trying to find out the exact reason why the train moved after stopping at Kathua to avoid such accidents in future.
