South Africa: Student shot dead in Johannesburg by stray bullet

A man shot two men in a parked car on a busy street near the centre of Johannesburg, South Africa, with a stray bullet, killing one university student and seriously injuring another, police said.

The students were hit as the bus passed the scene.

No arrests have been made so far.

Gun crime claims dozens of lives every day in South Africa, but witnesses to these killings said they were shocked by what happened.

“The man and one student in the vehicle were pronounced dead, and the other student was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment,” police spokesperson Col. Dimakatso Nebhluwi said of the incident on Thursday afternoon.

Images shared on social media show the body of a man hanging from a car window.

Another image appears to show a person being treated at the crime scene on a main road in Braamfontein, an area near the university campus.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police spokesperson Zolani Fira said the motive for the shooting was unknown.

A student told local news channel eNCA that he heard several gunshots followed by chaos.
“It was a really traumatic experience. “It’s really scary because it can happen to anyone,” she said.

Another woman said she had witnessed violent incidents in the area before.

Police and forensic investigators are on the scene.
