Senegal: Central Election Commission ready for 24th March polls

Senegal’s Central Election Commission said there was no need for alarm regarding preparations to hold presidential elections on March 24.

There is a jubilant mood in Senegal as the government finally sets a date for the postponed presidential election.

However, there are concerns that the Election Commission does not have enough time.
The European Commission has reassured Senegalese citizens there is nothing to worry about, and that they were not under any pressure.

Officials said election materials had already been sent to regional offices and their teams had been mobilized before the elections were postponed early last month.

The move to hold elections before President Macky Sall’s term expires on April 2 would end a crisis that has divided the country and led to weeks of protests.

Before Wednesday’s announcement, authorities had sought to postpone the originally scheduled February 25 election to December, sparking a political crisis.
