The UN Secretary-General called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan.
After nearly a year of fighting between Sudan’s military and paramilitary rapid support forces, President Antonio Guterres has ordered warring parties to cease hostilities during the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
His appeal comes as members of the UN Security Council are negotiating a draft UK resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access, which could be voted on as early as Friday.
The United Nations Secretary-General said that cessation of hostilities must lead to the final silencing of weapons and provide a sure path to lasting peace.
He warned that Sudan’s humanitarian crisis had reached extraordinary proportions and that the human rights situation continued to spiral out of control.
Almost a year later, at least 14,000 people have been killed.
The war threatens to cause the world’s largest hunger crisis, and there are reports of children dying from malnutrition, making it already the world’s largest displacement crisis.
