USA: Donald Trump elected 47th president after winning key swing states

Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States, an extraordinary comeback for a former president accused of sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.

Republican Donald Trump declared victory over his Democratic rival Kamala Harris in the US presidential election earlier after three swing states voted for the Republican party.

After winning Wisconsin, CNN has projected Trump elected the 47th president of America. Speaking in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump pledged to bring a “golden age” to the United States, praising what he called “the greatest political movement of all time”.

Kamala Harris vhas yet to concede, though projections CBS, suggest that Trump is standing on the precipice of an historic victory.

Harris cancelled her expected election night appearance at Howard University in Washington DC, where she was an undergraduate, after Trump gained momentum as early results began to trickle in.

Vice-President Harris, 60, only became the Democratic Party candidate in July, after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race under pressure from within the party. Had she claimed victory, the former California senator have become the first woman, black woman and South Asian-American to win the presidency.
