Italy: President Giorgia Meloni and PM Mikati condemn UNIFIL in Lebanon

In a call with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the attack on UN peacekeepers and assured that Lebanon would complete its investigations into the incident.

“I would like to express my deep solidarity with Italy and wish a speedy recovery to the injured soldiers,” Mikati said. “What happened is unacceptable. However, we are committed to completing the investigations and will inform you of the results as soon as they are completed.”

He also emphasised the importance of continued support for Lebanon, adding, “I hope this unfortunate event will not affect your determination to support Lebanon or your vital role in helping us achieve a ceasefire.”

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is a peacekeeping mission established by the UN Security Council in March 1978, days after Israel invaded Lebanon.
