- Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 53,655 Palestinians and wounded 121,950, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The Government Media Office updated the death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of people missing under the rubble are presumed dead.
- An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, and more than 200 were taken captive.
Israel’s UN envoy calls shooting ‘depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism’
We have been reporting on a deadly shooting tonight in Washington, DC, which has left two Israeli embassy staffers dead.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, has condemned the attack as a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism”.
“Harming the Jewish community is crossing a red line. We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act. Israel will continue to act resolutely to protect its citizens and representatives – everywhere in the world,” Danon said in a post on X.
Washington police chief says shooting suspect in custody
Washington police chief Pamela Smith said officers have arrested a suspect following the murder of two Israeli embassy staff members outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC.
Smith said the suspect was seen pacing outside the museum before the shooting. Following the attack, security detained the suspect and handed them over to police. Smith said the suspect chanted “Free, free Palestine” in custody.
Israeli embassy in Washington spokesman, Tal Naim Cohen, confirmed that two staff members were shot “at close range” while attending a Jewish event at the museum.
EU ties to Israel in spotlight as diplomats come under Israeli fire in occupied West Bank
Pandemonium as the group of diplomats comes under fire.
Representatives from Canada, Italy, Belgium, the UK and many other countries were on their way to observe the humanitarian situation in the Jenin refugee camp on a trip organised by the Palestinian Authority.
The Israeli military said its troops fired warning shots after the delegation deviated from the approved route. No one was injured.
Italy, Spain and France are summoning Israel’s ambassadors to explain the incident, and the EU’s foreign policy chief has called for an investigation.
The incident comes as pressure is building in Europe on Israel to end its blockade and allow aid into Gaza. The EU said it is reviewing its trade and cooperation agreement with Israel, warning that it may impose sanctions if the Israeli prime minister doesn’t let aid into the Strip.
The EU has often been accused of doing little to end the war in Gaza despite its huge political and financial leverage.
But there are many countries pushing the bloc to take a tougher stand against Israel. They are warning that the EU may never recover morally from not doing more to stop the deaths of tens of thousands of people.

First aid trucks arrive in Gaza as Israel loosens siege

US security chief says 2 killed in Washington shooting, both Israeli embassy staff
As we reported moments ago, two people have been shot tonight in an attack outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC.
The Trump administration’s homeland security director, Kristi Noem, has now confirmed that the victims, both of whom were Israeli embassy staffers, have died.
“We will bring this depraved perpetrator to justice,” Noem wrote in a post on X.
We will bring you further updates when we have them.

Palestinian activist in the occupied West Bank, Ihab Hassan, reports that Israeli settlers have stormed the village of Aqraba, southeast of Nablus, and carried out attacks on Palestinian-owned property.
Hassan said the settlers set a Palestinian-owned vehicle on fire and “attempted to burn a mosque with worshippers still inside” in what he described as an “apparent attempt to burn them alive”.

The diplomats were on a mission to assess the humanitarian situation for Palestinians in the area.
Uruguay becomes latest country to summon Israeli ambassador
As we previously reported, several countries – including France, Spain, Canada and the UK – have summoned their respective Israeli ambassadors after Israeli forces fired towards a group of European Union and Arab diplomats in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.
Uruguay’s Foreign Ministry has now announced that it has summoned Ambassador Michal Hershkovitz and asked him to “clarify the reported facts” as to why the shots were fired.
A Uruguayan representative was among the foreign diplomats fired upon on Wednesday.

Israel says latest attempted missile attack from Yemen ‘intercepted’
Israel’s military said the missile launched from Yemen that triggered air raid sirens across central Israel early this morning has been intercepted.
The military gave no details regarding the attempted missile attack, which appears to be the latest by Yemen’s Houthi fighters, other than saying air raid “alerts were triggered according to policy”.
This latest early morning attack on Israel was the fourth so far this month blamed on Yemen’s Houthis. It follows after a missile was intercepted on Monday and another was intercepted last Thursday.
A missile fired from Yemen also exploded near Israel’s Ben Gurion airport outside Tel Aviv on May 4, wounding several people and causing the temporary suspension of flights and several major airlines to cancel services to the airport.

More than a dozen killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since midnight
We have been reporting on the Israeli military’s ongoing attacks across Gaza over recent hours, including a strike on a warehouse housing displaced Palestinians in Deir el-Balah that has killed at least nine people.
Citing medical sources in the besieged enclave, our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues now report that Israeli attacks since midnight have killed at least 14 people.
We will bring you further updates when we have them.
At least 9 killed in Israeli air strike on displaced people sheltering in warehouse
Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report that nine people have been killed in an Israeli air strike on a warehouse where forcibly displaced Palestinians had taken shelter in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.
Local Palestinian media in Gaza have put the death toll at 10, and the victims are reported to be aged between seven and 51 years old.
We will bring you more on this attack as information emerges.
Gaza’s medics prepare to adopt ‘drastic survival mechanisms’ due to Israeli aid blockade
The crisis is spiralling out of control further in Gaza.
Medical teams say that what they are seeing is not just a kind of shortage of medical supplies, but a clear breakdown of Gaza’s healthcare system.
They told us that there has been a very sharp decline in the number of cardiac and vascular surgeries performed in Gaza’s barely functioning hospitals.
They have been working around the clock with almost nothing. They have started to reuse basic medical tools, and they are talking about a clear surge in the number of patients who are unable to get basic medical services.
This is the clear outcome of the ongoing Israeli ban on medical supply deliveries to Gaza.
What’s left in warehouses will be enough for no more than a couple of weeks and then they will start to adopt drastic survival mechanisms in order to guarantee the provisioning of at least minimum numbers of operations on a daily basis.

Foreign diplomats under fire in West Bank as Israeli forces storm Jenin
As we have been reporting, Israeli forces opened fire on a delegation of foreign diplomats as they were visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.
The incident, which occurred during a raid by Israeli forces in the northern city, has caused international outrage and intensified concerns over the safety of humanitarian and diplomatic missions in the region.
Number of aid trucks allowed enter Gaza a ‘drop in the ocean’ amid dire need
It is very important to point out that while 90 trucks might seem like a big number, it is really not.
And this is why.
Before October 7, 2023 – before Israel began its bombardment of the Gaza Strip – about 500 to 600 aid trucks were going into Gaza every day.
Again. that’s before Israel began its bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
So 90 trucks simply, in the words of UN officials, is a “drop in the ocean”. Particularly since it’s now been 11 weeks that Israel had a total and complete blockade on all aid.
UN officials are certainly not celebrating … because they say they will take any aid they can to get in, even to save one life.
But, clearly, this is nowhere even close to the amount that is needed.

Israeli forces continue to besiege hospital in northern Gaza
As we previously reported, the Israeli military carried out artillery fire targeting northern Gaza’s al-Awda Hospital on Wednesday, while drones also struck water tanks at the health facility.
An Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent in Gaza now reports that Israeli forces are continuing to besiege the hospital in Tal az-Zaatar.
Israeli tanks are firing on hospital buildings, including the specialised surgery department. No casualties have been reported so far.
We will bring you more information when we have it.
UN says 90 aid trucks reach Gaza distribution points
The facts, as we know them from the United Nations, they are confirming within the last hour that 90 trucks have got to their distribution points in Gaza and some aid is starting to be distributed.
Now what aid is that? The UN most recently, in the last information we are hearing, they are not giving specifics.
However, we’ve heard from UN officials in the last 24 to 36 hours – before these trucks arrived – who say that they believe it will be flour, some medicine, nutritional supplies and some baby formula.
But in terms of details on how much flour; when and where, exactly, it is being distributed – the UN is simply saying they do not have that information at this hour.
What we can tell you is the UN is saying that no petroleum or gasoline is being allowed into Gaza by Israeli authorities.
That is important because that means there is no gasoline to power generators for hospitals or even bakeries to keep ovens running and things like that.
Israel continues to block that.

Israeli military carries out several deadly attacks across Gaza
Our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues are reporting several deadly Israeli military attacks that have taken place across the Gaza Strip in recent hours, including:

- One person has been killed and others injured after Israeli forces bombed an area northwest of Gaza City.
- Two people have been killed after Israeli fighter jets bombed a tent housing displaced Palestinians in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza.
- One person has been killed and others injured after the Israeli military bombed a warehouse housing displaced Palestinians south of Deir el-Balah.
- One person has been killed and others injured after the Israeli military bombed a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp, central Gaza.
We will bring you more information on these attacks when we have it.
Sirens sound across central Israel as missile fired from Yemen

No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
We will bring you more information when we have it.
Thousands of aid trucks for Gaza made to wait in Egypt
We have been reporting on Israel’s slow lifting of its total blockade on humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip.
Video shows some of the thousands of aid trucks that officials say are stuck in Egypt as Israel continues to block the vast majority of desperately needed supplies getting into the besieged enclave.
A recap of recent developments
- Israel’s military has continued its assault on Gaza, killing at least 87 Palestinians as it shows no sign of letting up its relentless bombardment of the besieged enclave.
- UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric has confirmed that “around 90 truckloads of goods” have been dispatched in Gaza, as Israel slowly lifts its months-long blockade on desperately needed aid entering the war-torn territory.
- Dujarric also stressed the “limited supplies” Israel is allowing into Gaza are “nowhere near enough to meet the needs” of Palestinians, with aid still held up at the Karam Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will retain control of Gaza when its assault ends, adding that it would consider a “temporary” halt to its bombardment of the territory to allow for the release of remaining captives.
- Several countries – including France, Spain, and the UK – have summoned their Israeli ambassadors after Israeli forces fired towards a group of diplomats in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.
- South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said Donald Trump did not raise his country’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice during their White House meeting, despite suggestions the US president would demand a change of course.
