LIVE UPDATES: Israel kills nearly 100 people in Gaza in 24 hours, halts aid

Mazzaltov World News provides you with the latest live coverage of Current Affairs, Sports, Health, Weather, Entertainment, Business and Travel News from around the world.

Here’s where things stand on Wednesday 4 June 2025:

  • The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and humanitarian access to Gaza, a measure expected to be vetoed by the United States.
  • At least 95 Palestinians have been killed and 440 injured in Israeli attacks across Gaza in the past 24 hours, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry.
  • Israel’s military has warned starving Palestinians in Gaza against approaching roads to the US-backed aid distribution sites run by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which will be closed for a whole day for “renovation, reorganisation and efficiency improvement work”.
  • Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 54,607 Palestinians and wounded 125,341, according to the Health Ministry.
  • An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, and more than 200 taken captive.

Gaza aid centres closed again for ‘maintenance and repair’

The controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says its few aid sites in Gaza will remain closed on Thursday as Palestinians continue to starve.

“Our distribution sites will not open as early as tomorrow morning as in the past days, due to maintenance and repair work being done at the sites. We will share information on opening times as soon as work is complete,” it said in a statement.

The Israel-US-backed foundation has replaced decades of UN-led aid distribution, with hundreds of distribution points. Meanwhile, Israel still continues to block desperately needed humanitarian relief from entering Gaza.

US lawmakers urge greater action to get aid into Gaza

Progressive Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal says 92 members of the US House of Representatives have called for the administration of US President Donald Trump to use “all diplomatic tools at its disposal” to ensure more humanitarian aid enters Gaza.

“Innocent civilian lives — children and babies — can be saved by ensuring that much-needed aid gets to Gazans,” Jayapal said in a statement.

“This humanitarian crisis is man-made and can be solved by allowing aid trucks to enter Gaza. Every diplomatic tool in our toolbox must be used to ensure that this happens.”

Columbia University failed to protect Jewish students: US gov’t

The US Education Department says Columbia University has not met accreditation standards because of what the government says is a failure to protect Jewish students from alleged anti-Semitism amid pro-Palestine protests on campus.

The Trump administration has sought harsh measures against students involved in pro-Palestine activism, even arresting and attempting to deport international students over their criticism of Israel’s devastating war on Gaza.

Pro-Palestine protesters swarm UK Parliament

Protesters formed what they described as a “red line” around Parliament today.

It was intended to symbolise what they said were the repeated red lines that the UK allowed Israel to cross, and as they called for the UK to suspend its normal relations with Israel, a full arms embargo and sanctions.

Israel committing war crimes and crimes against humanity: Mansour

Palestine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, has addressed the Security Council. Here are some of his main points:

  • This draft resolution had a simple goal, demanding a ceasefire that would allow the beginning of the monumental work needed to end the horrific humanitarian situation; to stop the genocide; to release hostages and prisoners; and to get the Israeli occupying forces out of Gaza before they get a chance to implement their plans to destroy our people.
  • The draft resolution also demanded an end to the engineered starvation that has brought an entire civilian population, 2 million people, among them 1 million children, to the edge of famine, and then used aid to lure them and confine them to an extremely limited area of the Gaza Strip, clearly to facilitate their expunction and annexation.
  • The UN has stated Gaza is the hungriest place on Earth. It is the only defined territory in the world where the entire population is at risk of famine.
  • Can this council act, as demanded by the charter that unifies all of us, to respect and honour the principles reflected and contained in that charter, our constitution?
  • This has to stop. Israel has to end this punitive, illegal siege. It has to open all crossings and allow aid to reach Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip.

This is the fifth time the US has vetoed a ceasefire resolution

Once again, the United States finds itself isolated on the Security Council when it comes to the situation in Gaza, just like it was in November.

The last time a ceasefire draft resolution was before the council, 14 members voted for it. The United States was the only one against it.

In November, we heard from Dorothy Shea, the US ambassador, basically saying anything that undermines Israel’s security is a non-starter for the United States.

It’s worth reiterating: This is the fifth time the United States has vetoed a Security Council Gaza ceasefire resolution since October 2023.

Dozens injured in settler attack in occupied West Bank

The mayor of Deir Dibwan has told our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic that 35 Palestinians have been injured in the settler attack we’ve been reporting on near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Local sources said Israeli forces assaulted Palestinians during a raid in the Kuttab neighbourhood of Tulkarem, in the north of the occupied West Bank.

Since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, at least 972 Palestinians have been killed and more than 7,000 injured in attacks by the Israeli army and settlers across the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

US Secretary of State says he discussed Gaza with Saudi counterpart

Marco Rubio says in a statement he spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud about the situation in Gaza, as well as efforts to stabilise Syria.

Last month, Rubio suggested US “engagement” is what led Israel to allow a limited amount of aid into Gaza after a months-long blockade on food, medicine and other basic supplies. At a Senate hearing, he appeared to acknowledge that more aid needs to reach the Palestinians in Gaza.

The US has refused to directly criticise Israel’s decision to prevent food and medicine from reaching Gaza.

Israeli opposition figure Ayman Odeh denounces impeachment efforts

Ayman Odeh, a Palestinian lawmaker in the Israeli Knesset, says efforts to have him impeached are part of a campaign of intimidation by far-right politicians seeking to silence dissent against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

He was forcefully removed from the poidum in the Knesset several weeks ago while delivering remarks critical of the war.

“The move to impeach me is part of a campaign of political persecution led by the far right, in an attempt to ensure the complete victory of Kahanism in the upcoming elections,” Odeh said in a social media post.

“Since the beginning of the war, calls for genocide have been heard in the Knesset from coalition members – and none of them have been dismissed. But when an Arab MK [member of parliament] tells the truth and tries to tear down the wall of silence about the criminal policies of the fascist government, they rush to try to oust him.”

Mapping Israel’s expanding air attacks across Syria

Since December 10, 2024, just two days after the stunning collapse of more than 53 years of the al-Assad family, Israel has waged a campaign of aerial bombardment that has destroyed much of Syria’s military infrastructure, including major airports, air defence facilities, fighter jets and other strategic infrastructure.

Over the past six months, Israeli forces have launched more than 200 air, drone or artillery attacks across Syria, averaging an assault roughly every three to four days, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project.

UN draft resolution not adopted after US veto

The result of the voting is as follows: 14 votes in favour, one vote against (by the US), and zero abstentions.

The United States vetoed the UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza because it’s not linked to the release of captives.

The resolution also does not condemn Hamas’s deadly attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, or say the group must disarm and withdraw from Gaza – two other US demands.

Amar Bendjama, the permanent representative of Algeria to the United Nations, is now speaking.

US ambassador says resolution a ‘non-starter’

In remarks before the start of the voting, US envoy Dorothy Shea said she will not back the resolution.

“United States opposition to this resolution should come as no surprise,” said Shea.

“The United States has taken the very clear position since this conflict began that Israel has the right to defend itself, which includes defeating Hamas and ensuring they are never again in a position to threaten Israel. In this regard, any product that undermines our close ally Israel’s security is a non-starter.”

UN Security Council prepares to vote on Gaza ceasefire resolution

The UNSC has kicked off a meeting in which members will vote on a resolution that calls for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties; the immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all captives held by Palestinian groups in Gaza; and the immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

If you’re just joining us

Here are the latest developments:

  • The Palestinian Prisoners Society said at least 10,400 Palestinians are being detained in Israeli custody as Israeli forces continue to carry out large-scale arrests in the occupied West Bank. The group says that number includes 440 minors and 49 women and does not include Palestinians held in Israeli military camps. One-third are being held without charge through a controversial practice known as “administrative detention”.
  • A survey of Palestinian and international NGOs operating in Gaza found that 93 percent said that their existing aid stores in Gaza were completely or nearly exhausted, as Israel continues to impose severe restrictions on the entry of humanitarian assistance into the Strip. About one-third of the organisations surveyed also said they have staff who have been injured or killed in Israeli attacks.
  • The Israeli Defence Ministry said arms exports hit an all-time high last year, despite ongoing calls to end such agreements with Israel over abuses in Gaza and elsewhere.
  • US President Donald Trump said time is “running out” to reach an agreement that would limit Iran’s ability to acquire nuclear weapons, as negotiations between the US and Iran slouch forward.

UN Security Council feels deep frustration over Gaza crisis

I think the United Nations Security Council has been looking at what has been transpiring in Gaza, just like the rest of the world has been watching, and they’re deeply frustrated.

They’re frustrated the council has not been able to do anything to stop the bloodshed, to open up the border crossings, to get more aid in to the people of Gaza who need it the most. And I think you’re sensing, particularly from the elected 10 members of the council, but really universally, deep, deep, frustration that they have to do more.

The last time the Security Council had a resolution on Gaza was in November of last year – 14 Security Council members voted for it, one did not, and that was the United States, which vetoed it.

That was the fourth time the US has vetoed a Gaza ceasefire resolution. Since November until now, you’ve seen the killing continue, the starvation of Palestinians in Gaza continue, and I think this was the moment when the Security Council as a whole said that they have to get this draft through to get more pressure on the Israelis to stop.

UN wants ‘to get back on track’ with Gaza Security Council vote

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, says the ideal outcome of the upcoming Security Council vote for a ceasefire in Gaza “is a strong unified voice”.

“Calling for an end to the conflict, for full access to the UN and its partners, for the release of the hostages, and for us to get back on track to a two-state solution regardless how distant that dream may currently be,” Dujarric told Al Jazeera.

The UN Security Council will vote at 20:00 GMT on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access in Gaza, a measure expected to fail because of a US veto.

Fast facts: Who are Israeli settlers?

In light of the two settler attacks near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, here are some quick facts about who the settlers are:

  • Settlers are Israeli citizens who live illegally on private Palestinian land.
  • Israel started building settlements after capturing the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip in the June 1967 Six-Day War.
  • Now more than 700,000 settlers – 10 percent of Israel’s nearly seven million population – live in 150 illegal settlements and 128 outposts spread across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
  • The government has openly funded and built settlements, and Israeli authorities give their settlers in the occupied West Bank about $5.6m a year to monitor, report, and restrict Palestinian construction in Area C – which is administered solely by Israel and comprises more than 60 percent of the West Bank.
  • The United Nations has condemned the settlements through multiple resolutions and votes.
  • But the United States has provided diplomatic cover for Israel for decades, with Washington consistently using its veto power at the UN to protect Israel from diplomatic censure.

Israeli settlers rarely face consequences for West Bank attacks

Reporting from Amman, Jordan

Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.

There have been two attacks on separate villages just east of Ramallah, where at least seven people have been injured by these Israeli settlers who set fire to Palestinian homes, vehicles and agricultural land.

Oftentimes, these attacks happen under the protection of Israeli forces. There is little to no consequence whatsoever, and Palestinians will tell you they’re essentially defenceless from settler attacks and Israeli army raids, with no one to protect them.

Israeli settlers are often rewarded by the Israeli government. Just last week, there were 22 new illegal settlements that were approved, many of which were outposts illegal even under Israeli law.

This is when Israeli settlers set up some caravans or tents on privately owned Palestinian land, and then the state of Israel ends up recognising that – effectively taking that land away from the Palestinians.

So these types of settler attacks have only increased since the war on Gaza began, and the UN says they’re at record-high numbers.

Injuries reported after Israeli settlers storm occupied West Bank village

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) says seven Palestinians have been injured in the settler attack on the village of Deir Dibwan, east of Ramallah, that we reported on earlier.

The West Bank is home to more than three million Palestinians who live under Israeli military rule, with the Palestinian Authority governing in limited areas.

Israel has already built more than 100 illegal settlements across the occupied West Bank that are home to some 500,000 settlers. The settlements range from small outposts to larger communities with modern infrastructure.

UN appoints new head of UNIFIL

The UN has selected Major-General Diodato Abagnara to lead the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

UNIFIL statement said Abagnara will succeed Lieutenant-General Aroldo Lazaro Saenz.

In Lebanon, although the truce between Israel and Hezbollah officially ended hostilities, sporadic cross-border attacks have continued.

Israel has regularly broken the truce and carried out air raids across southern Lebanon, also hitting neighbourhoods in Beirut’s southern suburbs, where Hezbollah retains strong support.

German ambassador to Israel alarmed over increase in settler outposts

Germany’s ambassador to Israel said in a social media post that he met Israeli anti-occupation groups Peace Now and Keren Navot for a report on attacks on Palestinian shepherds by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

“They presented an alarming report about the rapid increase of settler herding outposts in the West Bank pushing out Palestinian shepherd communities,” Steffen Seibert said in a social media post.

“Glad to see so much interest from colleagues in the diplomatic community.”

Settlers storm village in occupied West Bank

Israeli settlers attacked the village of Deir Dibwan, east of Ramallah, in footage published by locals in the occupied West Bank on Telegram and verified by Al Jazeera.

In the videos, smoke can be seen rising from homes and farms in the area as Palestinians try to extinguish fires. A large vehicle can also be seen completely burned out, with flames still visible in the back as a Palestinian sprayed water from a hose to contain the fire.

Germans want stricter controls on arms exports to Israel

About 73 percent of Germans want tighter controls on arms exports to Israel, including 30 percent who favour a total ban, a poll shows, reflecting growing public unease over the government’s Israel policy.

Germany approved military equipment exports to Israel worth 485 million euros ($554m) from late 2023 to present.

The deliveries included firearms, ammunition, weapons parts, special equipment for the army and navy, electronic equipment, and special armoured vehicles.

No lawsuit challenging German arms exports to Israel has yet succeeded, including a case brought by Nicaragua at the International Court of Justice.

But Germany’s stance shifted last week when new Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised Israel’s intensified air strikes in Gaza, calling them no longer justified or comprehensible. His foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, warned of possible consequences, hinting at steps towards arms export sanctions.

Trump says ‘time is running out’ on Iran nuclear negotiations

The US president said in a social media post discussing a telephone call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that a deal to curb Iran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon must be reached quickly.

“We also discussed Iran and the fact that time is running out on Iran’s decision pertaining to nuclear weapons, which must be made quickly! I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement,” Trump said.

“President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion. It is my opinion that Iran has been slow-walking their decision on this very important matter, and we will need a definitive answer in a very short period of time!”

Palestinians being ‘stripped of their human dignity’: Red Cross boss

Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, says humanitarian conditions in Gaza have become worse since April, when the Strip was “hell on Earth”.

“The fact that we are watching people being entirely stripped of their human dignity should really shock our collective conscience,” she said in an interview.

The world is seeing a type of warfare in Gaza that “shows utmost disrespect for civilians”.

Israel’s aid sites are ‘a trap’

At a hospital in southern Gaza, the family of Reem al-Akhras, who was killed in Israel’s mass shooting on Tuesday, mourned her death.

“She went to bring us some food, and this is what happened to her,” her son Zain Zidan said through tears.

Her husband, Mohamed Zidan, said “every day unarmed people” are being killed. “This is not humanitarian aid – it’s a trap.”

More than 100 Palestinian people seeking aid have been reported killed by Israeli forces in the vicinity of Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) distribution centres since the organisation started operating in the enclave on May 27.

Irish university to cut ties with Israel over war on Gaza

The Republic of Ireland’s Trinity College Dublin says it will sever all ties with Israel because of its “ongoing violations of international and humanitarian law”.

The decision comes after a series of student protests bringing attention to Israeli military abuses in Gaza and calling for an end to ties with the country.

The news agency AFP reported that the board of the leading university sent an email to students saying it would no longer do business with Israeli firms, would divest from all companies based in Israel, and would decline further mobility agreements with Israeli universities.

‘Deeply disturbing’: UK minister denounces aid site killings

At least 27 people were killed and more than 100 wounded when Israeli troops opened fire near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation site in southern Gaza on Tuesday. The Israeli military said the incident is under investigation.

The UK called for an “immediate and independent investigation”, echoing a demand from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

UK Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer said the deaths of Palestinians as they sought food were “deeply disturbing” as he called Israel’s new measures for aid delivery “inhumane”. UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said, “These are not isolated incidents,” and called for accountability.

The United Nations says the territory’s entire population remains at risk of famine.

Clear surge in Israeli attacks across Gaza

Israeli missiles continue to assail Gaza and there’s been a focus in the past two hours on targeting residential areas in Deir el-Balah.

We have seen different distressing images of Israeli bombings, and we have also recorded a new air strike on the al-Mawasi area. Three Palestinians were killed in the attack, including two children.

This reflects a very confusing Israeli strategy. The military has been calling residents, telling them to move to al-Mawasi. Families packed up and started to set up tents in this very tiny strip of land that continues to be bombarded by Israeli ground and air forces.

There has been a clear surge of attacks, the latest on Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where the water system has been critically destroyed.

UNICEF spokesman ‘shocked’ by extent of malnutrition in Gaza

UNICEF spokesman James Elder, currently in Gaza, has described the “horrors” he witnessed within just 24 hours.

Speaking from al-Mawasi, Elder told Al Jazeera that Gaza’s hospitals and streets are filled with malnourished children. “I’m seeing teenage boys in tears, showing me their ribs,” he said, noting that children were pleading for food.

He described people so desperate they walk kilometres to aid centres – despite knowing “massacres” have recently taken place there.

“Imagine knowing there’d be a massacre, but being so desperate to feed your family that you still go,” he said, blaming the Israel-US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation for enabling the violence and then shutting down operations without delivering enough aid.

UN humanitarian chief says aid must be let into Gaza at scale

Tom Fletcher says a series of “deliberate choices” have deprived more than two million people of life-saving assistance in Gaza.

“Open all of the crossings. Let in lifesaving aid at scale, from all directions. Lift restrictions on what and how much aid we can bring in. Ensure our convoys aren’t held up by delays and denials,” he said.

“Release the hostages. Implement the ceasefire. Let us work.”

NGO survey finds increased restrictions on movement in occupied West Bank

A report detailing the results of a survey of 29 non-governmental organisations operating in the occupied West Bank has found many aid groups have reduced or suspended operations there and are facing greater restrictions on movement.

The report said “93 percent of surveyed NGOs in the West Bank report a sharp increase in movement restrictions throughout the reporting period”, and noted that 86 percent reported that things such as increased waiting time at Israeli checkpoints have hindered efforts to distribute aid.

About 72 percent of NGOs also said violent attacks by Israeli settlers are affecting their areas of operation.

What is the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation?

  • Officially independent, the GHF is an Israel-and-US-backed body that began distributing aid in the Gaza Strip on May 27.
  • Under increasing international pressure to allow in humanitarian relief, Israel sought to find a solution it says prevents aid from falling into the hands of armed Palestinian groups.
  • Humanitarian organisations say the vast majority of food and other supplies reach Gaza’s civilian population and are not diverted to fighters.
  • While the previous UN-led distribution network operated about 400 sites across the Strip, the GHF – guarded by armed private security contractors working for a US company – has set up only four “mega-sites” for Gaza’s population of 2.3 million Palestinians.
  • The UN and aid groups say the GHF does not abide by humanitarian principles, accusing it of weaponising aid and warning it could serve to depopulate northern Gaza, as planned by the Israeli military.
  • Israel killed 32 Palestinians waiting to get food at two GHF aid distribution sites in Gaza and wounded more than 200 others.
  • Gaza’s authorities report more than 100 aid seekers have been killed since the GHF started operating.

Human Rights Watch says US strike on Yemeni port likely a war crime

The international human rights watchdog says an April 17 US attack on Ras Issa Port in Hodeidah should be investigated as a war crime.

The group said the attack, carried out as part of a US campaign against the Houthi rebel group, resulted in dozens of civilian casualties and seriously damaged port infrastructure.

“The US government’s decision to strike Ras Issa Port, a critical entry point for aid in Yemen, while hundreds of workers were present demonstrates a callous disregard for civilians’ lives,” said Niku Jafarnia, Yemen and Bahrain researcher at Human Rights Watch.

“At a time when the majority of Yemenis don’t have adequate access to food and water, the attack’s impact on humanitarian aid could be enormous, particularly after Trump administration aid cutbacks.”

UNRWA chief says restrictions in aid entering Gaza must end

Philippe Lazzarini says no safe, dignified, or significant humanitarian aid has entered Gaza for three months during Israel’s blockade, and the UN is the only organisation with the experience and resources necessary to dramatically ramp up distribution.

“We have got to and must go back to bringing in aid at scale to people wherever they are and deliver it safely. The only way to do this is through the United Nations, including UNRWA,” he said in a social media post.

“We have the expertise, experience and resources. We demonstrated tangible impact during the ceasefire when obstacles were lifted. Delaying the decision to properly respond to the deepening hunger will further push down people in Gaza to an endless bottom and deepen dehumanization.”

Israeli hardliners try to block aid from entering Gaza

A hardline Israeli group has tried to stop aid trucks from entering Gaza as malnourished Palestinians face a suspension of aid distribution by the Israel-US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

About 20 activists from the group Tsav 9 attempted to block aid shipments at the Kerem Shalom (Karem Abu Salem) border crossing, Israeli media reported.

The protest came as the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation suspended aid distribution for a day. The move – to allow for “renovation, reorganisation and efficiency improvement work” – followed days of bloodshed in which Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian aid seekers near a distribution site.

Tsav 9 has previously blockaded aid trucks bound for Gaza, saying it harms Israel’s objectives in the war.

“Aid to the enemy is one of the main reasons for our faltering in the war. Aid prolonged it and hurt us badly,” the group wrote on X in a post on Tuesday, calling on supporters to join the blockade.

Israeli arms exports hit all-time high last year: Ministry

Israel exported a record-high $14.7bn worth of arms in 2024, according to its Defence Ministry.

Nearly half of the weapons sales involved missile, rocket and air defence systems.

Defence Minister Israel Katz attributed the uptick to the Israeli military’s combat “successes” in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen and elsewhere.

At the same time, numerous states, including traditional allies such as Spain, Italy, Canada and France, have suspended or sharply limited arms sales to Israel due to its ongoing attacks in Gaza.

More than 90% aid stocks nearly exhausted in Gaza

A survey of 46 Palestinian and international aid groups working in Gaza has found 93 percent reported their existing aid stocks are totally or nearly exhausted because of Israel’s devastating restrictions on humanitarian assistance.

About two-thirds also reported being unable to deliver services to communities in some parts of the Strip, and one-third said staff members had been wounded or killed in Israeli attacks.

“The government of Israel’s systemic obstruction of aid and the deterioration of the operating environment have severely affected the provision of assistance to communities in need,” a snapshot of the survey results said.
