Starmer says UK moving military assets to Middle East
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the United Kingdom is moving more military assets, including fighter jets, to the Middle East to provide “contingency support in the region”.
Crews began deployment preparations on Friday morning, when it was clear the situation in the region was deteriorating, a spokesperson for the prime minister said.
Further refuelling aircraft from British bases have been deployed, and additional fighter jets will be sent, the spokesperson added.
Separately, Starmer discussed the escalating Israel-Iran conflict in a call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Starmer’s office said in a statement that the two leaders had discussed the “gravely concerning situation in the Middle East” and agreed on the need to de-escalate.

Explosions in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem: Reports
Several explosions have been heard in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem after the Israeli military announced a new round of attacks by Iran.
Reuters reported a series of explosions in both cities, citing witnesses.
“Heavy bombardment of Tel Aviv right now, with multiple massive explotions [sic] heard,” Israeli reporter Haggai Matar said in a social media post.
Israeli military activates air raid sirens amid another round of Iranian missiles
“A short time ago, alerts were activated in several areas of the country following the discovery of missiles launched from Iran into the territory of the State of Israel,” a spokesperson for the military said in a statement.
“The public is asked to obey the instructions of the Home Front Command. At this time, the Air Force is working to intercept and attack wherever necessary to eliminate the threat. The defence is not hermetic, and therefore the instructions of the Home Front Command must continue to be obeyed.”
A recap of recent developments
- Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says it targeted Israeli energy infrastructure with a new wave of missiles, warning that its retaliatory attacks “will continue more fiercely and widely if the evils and aggressions continue” by Israel.
- At least three people have been killed in Israel in the latest Iranian missile salvo, which targeted several cities, including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa.
- The assault came after Israeli forces bombed the Shahran oil facility in the Iranian capital, Tehran, triggering large fires. Earlier on Saturday, Israel also attacked a gas field close to Bushehr and an oil refinery in Abadan, but the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says there is no damage at Fordow, one of Iran’s main uranium enrichment facilities.
- US President Donald Trump says he and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, agreed in a phone call that the Israel-Iran conflict must end.
- Iran has cancelled a sixth round of nuclear talks with the US, which were scheduled for Sunday, saying there is no justification for continuing negotiations in light of Israel’s continued attacks.
- An Iranian member of parliament now says the country is considering shutting the Strait of Hormuz, an important transit route for major energy-producing countries in the Gulf.

The fires appear to be visible across large swathes of Iran’s capital, with additional footage emerging from various locations across the city.
Trump responds to ‘America first’ critics of his Iran policy
Amid criticism from segments in his own base over supporting Israel’s attacks on Iran, the US president, who ran as an anti-war candidate, says there can be no peace with a nuclear-armed Iran.

‘What is taking place is unprecedented’
We don’t have that much information, but we saw smoke coming out of the scene [after the attack on the Shahran oil depot in Tehran]. It was said that the oil storage centre was targeted, but the extent of the damage is not that much.
A few seconds ago, we saw Iranian air defence systems being activated here in the capital. I saw the interceptions. The sounds of explosions were heard.
We are observing a continuation of Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, on Iran’s military targets, and on Iran’s civilian buildings.
What is taking place right now is unprecedented, and it’s going to pave the way for further escalation.

Iran seeking to restore deterrence
Abas Aslani, a senior research fellow at the Center for Middle East Strategic Studies, says Iran is not only trying to respond to Israel’s military bombardment of the country, but also to establish deterrence.
“Iran believes that it … needs to establish a kind of deterrence against Israel, in order to make it painful [for Israel] … so they can stop further attacks from their side,” Aslani told Al Jazeera from Tehran.
He said the Iranian attacks will likely happen in different stages and could continue for some time.
The country is also trying to strengthen its air defence system to be able to fend off Israeli attacks, Aslani added.
Israelis ‘have no trust’ in government forecast of conflict with Iran
Israeli political commentator Ori Goldberg says even as most Israelis support attacks against Iran, there is a general sense in Israel that “nobody is looking out for” the population.
Israelis are “extremely ambivalent” about what has been happening, Goldberg told Al Jazeera by phone from Israel shortly after the latest Iranian missiles were fired at the country.
“There is mass support, a very broad consensus, that … Israel should go after Iran because Iran wants to destroy Israel – that’s the official narrative,” he explained.
But on the other hand, “Israelis know that [Israeli attacks on Iran are] not capable of destroying the Iranian nuclear programme”, Goldberg said.
“They realise that this isn’t going to instigate regime change. There are already jokes being told about the prime minister and various other Israeli politicians using the strike for their own good.”
Ultimately, he said, “Israelis are preparing to care for themselves as this war continues. They have no trust in the official forecast and evaluation that the government has delivered to Israeli citizens.”

‘Just the beginning’ of Iranian retaliation
The attack on Haifa was expected – because that’s where the [Israeli] gas fields are located.
It seems that this is an initial retaliation to the Israeli attack on the gas field close to Bushehr and the oil refinery in Abadan. This is the tit-for-tat here between Israel and Iran.
But this is just the beginning for today because the Iranians are promising a wider retaliation. We’ll probably see more waves towards Haifa, towards Tel Aviv, towards Jerusalem.
