Iran chose to go beyond ‘minimum’ cause of action
Andreas Krieg, an associate professor at the School of Security Studies at King’s College London, said that the Iranian attack on the base in Qatar is an “absolute escalation” beyond “what was expected”.
“It’s the first time in Qatar’s history that we’ve had a military strike on the country,” Krieg told Al Jazeera.
He said that Iran had “many different cause of actions” that it could have taken to retaliate against yesterday’s strike on Iran’s nuclear bases.
“They’ve chosen, not necessarily the minimum sort of cause of action. They used something in the middle. A minimum one would have been striking a base in Iraq,” he said, adding that Qatar “plays a very important role for Iran”.
“[Qatar] has been a mediator back channel for Iran talking to the United States. It still plays a pivotal role in mediating this potential nuclear deal between the United States and Iran. It shares the greatest gas field with Iran, and has helped the Iranians in this respect.
“So, attacking Qatar is certainly an escalatory step beyond what was necessary.”
Qatari PM secured Iran’s agreement to US ceasefire proposal after call with Trump: Report
Reuters news agency, citing an unnamed US source, is reporting that Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani secured Tehran’s agreement to the US proposal for a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Iran during a call with Iranian officials.
The phone call came after US President Donald Trump told Qatar’s emir that Israel had agreed to the ceasefire and asked for Doha’s help in persuading Tehran to also agree to the ceasefire deal, the official told Reuters.
The reported ceasefire agreement was reached after Iran struck the US airbase Al Udeid in Qatar late on Monday.
Iran-backed Iraqi group says US attacks will not pass without ‘punishment’
Al-Nujaba Movement says the US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities constitutes a crime that violates all legal and ethical norms.
The Iraqi group portrayed Trump as an Israeli puppet, calling on “wise” people in the US to stop him from bringing woes to the country and the region.
Al-Nujaba Movement said in a statement that if Iran had not evacuated the nuclear facilities, the US strikes could have led to deadly radiation leaks.
“All of this will not pass without accountability and punishment,” the group added.
How extensive are Israel’s intelligence operations inside Iran?
Intelligence operations years in the making were behind Israel’s targeting of key military positions and leaders in Iran this month, according to the Israeli media.
The strikes that took out much of Iran’s key defensive infrastructure and killed military commanders are credited to an Israeli intelligence service that is claimed to have infiltrated much of Iran’s security apparatus.
Inside Iran, scores of people have reportedly been arrested and accused of spying for Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, providing media support for Israel or disturbing public opinion.

The statement also called for an immediate end to the “unprovoked aggression of the US and Israel against Iran, open attempts at regime change and encroachment on the sovereignty of nations”.
Trump’s announcement in full
Here’s what President Trump said on social media regarding the ceasefire:
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!
Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL.
On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.”
This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!

He was transferred to the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah, where he was later pronounced dead, Wafa news agency reported.
The US expected this attack to happen
The US was tracking short- and medium-range ballistic missiles from Iran to the Al Udeid Air Base.
They expected this to happen, which was clear from the moves the Pentagon made in the run-up to this.
We saw them move more than 40 US planes, according to the satellite imagery. They also removed personnel from the base.

China’s Ambassador to the United Nations Fu Cong said parties should restrain the “impulse of force, avoid exacerbating conflicts and adding fuel to the fire”, according to the state broadcaster CCTV.
Iran was hurt “but the United States’ credibility was also damaged – both as a country and as a participant in any international negotiations”, Fu added.

Can Iran really shut down the Strait of Hormuz?
One way Iran could retaliate to the recent US strikes is to shut the Strait of Hormuz, a vital trade route where one-fifth of the world’s oil supply – roughly 20 million barrels – and much of its liquified gas, is shipped each day.
That would lead to a surge in energy prices.
So, what do we know about the strategic passage, and can Iran afford to block it in response to the US and Israeli aggression?

“I will now address the results of the review with Israel,” said Kallas at a news conference.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry has rejected the EU report, which ministers discussed on Monday, as a “moral and methodological failure”.

The head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog has said the US bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities is likely to have caused extensive damage.
Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said this was the case because of “the explosive payload utilised and the extreme vibration-sensitive nature of centrifuges”.
However, the IAEA boss said the consequences of the attack were still not fully understood.
Grossi said “no one, including the IAEA, is in a position to have fully assessed the underground damage at Fordow”, referring to one of Iran’s nuclear facilities targeted by the Trump administration.

Iran’s attack on Al Udeid Air Base a ‘symbolic show of force’
Omar Rahman, a fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, says Iran’s attack on Al Udeid Air Base is a “symbolic show of force that the Iranians felt they needed to make”.
They also carried out the attack to show that they can “project that sort of power and force into the region”, Rahman told Al Jazeera.
“The Iranians felt that if there wasn’t any response … that would send the wrong message to the United States,” Rahman said.
Trump says Iran gave US ‘early notice’ of Al Udeid attack
The US president dismissed the Iranian missile launch at Al Udeid Air Base as weak, suggesting that Washington will not respond to it.
“I am pleased to report that NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done. Most importantly, they’ve gotten it all out of their ‘system,’ and there will, hopefully, be no further HATE,” Trump said in a social media post.
“I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured. Perhaps Iran can now proceed to Peace and Harmony in the Region, and I will enthusiastically encourage Israel to do the same.”
Remains to be seen whether this is the end of the Iranian response
It remains to be seen whether this marks the end of Iran’s response to the US attacks on its nuclear facilities.
Previously, Iran stated that it would respond if the US chose to intervene in the already escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. That has now happened.
But whether this will be the final attack, or if more are to come, is still unclear.
From the Iranian perspective, it could be implied that they consider the situation to be even at this point.
However, in the broader context, we are now seeing deeper involvement from the US. The Iranians claim that not only the US, but also European countries, are supplying Israel with the infrastructure and weaponry used to target Iranian territory.
So, from Iran’s point of view, it is part of an ongoing battle in which it is being targeted on a daily basis.
