Israel, once a master of narrative warfare, now faces adversaries it cannot defeat

Since October 7, 2023, the war of images has eclipsed the war of weapons.

From Gaza’s pulverised hospitals and starving infants to mass graves and desperate fathers digging through rubble, every pixel captured on a smartphone strikes deeper than a missile.

These raw, unfiltered and undeniable images have a far greater impact than any news conference or official speech. And for the first time in its history, Israel cannot delete them or drown them in propaganda.

Witnesses recount horror of Gaza clinic attack

One of the latest Israeli strikes has hit a clinic in Gaza City where displaced Palestinians were sheltering.

At least six people were killed and several wounded.

“They told me that my brother-in-law was wounded and his son killed. His wife and daughter are in the ICU,” said Umm Waseem, a displaced Palestinian and witness to the attack.

“The strike hit the room next to his where he was with his family. As you can see, it’s a horrifying scene – blood everywhere, bodies torn apart.”

Another witness, Ahmed Qaddoum, said: “We went to western Gaza City as instructed by the Israeli army and took shelter in Remal Clinic. It was filled with displaced people from Shujayea and other areas of Gaza City. While we were asleep, thinking it was safe, missiles suddenly struck. We rushed out and saw bodies, torn limbs, women and children. The place was completely devastated.”

Trump will want to ‘highlight’ his role in any ceasefire deal

The latest ceasefire agreement is very similar to previous proposals, Adel Abdel Ghafar, the director of the Foreign Policy Program at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, tells Al Jazeera.

The Israelis don’t want to budge on some of their key demands, such as removing Hamas and having complete control of the food distribution in the Gaza Strip, he said.

“It seems that Netanyahu is in this perpetual war mode because if he ends the war, he will be legally liable in his own country,” Ghafar said, referring to corruption charges the Israeli prime minister is on trial for.

Ghafar said that despite Netanyahu’s stance, Trump could prove more persuasive than any developments in Doha, where Israeli negotiators are to hold indirect talks with Hamas.

“Trump would want to announce and be part of the ceasefire, to highlight that he is part of the solution,” Ghafar said.

Death toll near aid centre rises

Another Palestinian has been killed by Israeli gunfire near an aid centre north of Rafah, Gaza’s emergency services say.

More than 40 have also been wounded.

Which ports in Yemen did the Israeli army target?

The Israeli army said on Sunday that it hit the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Isa and as-Salif on the Red Sea coast as well as the Ras Khatib power plant.

If you’re just joining us

Let’s get you up to speed with the latest developments:

  • At least 19 people have been killed across Gaza today, including six in Gaza City in an Israeli attack on Remal Clinic.
  • The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) says it’s distributing food again at its sites in the besieged enclave after the US- and Israeli-backed group suspended operations on Sunday.
  • Israeli settlers have stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem under the protection of Israeli police.
  • Israeli media outlets are reporting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has arrived in the US for his meeting with President Donald Trump with Gaza ceasefire talks high on the agenda

Gaza death toll rises

Medical sources at Gaza hospitals say at least 19 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks today.

Ten injured in Israeli air raids on southern Lebanon on Sunday

Lebanon’s Health Ministry says at least 10 people were wounded in Israeli air raids in southern Lebanon on Sunday.

According to the ministry, one attack on Rahhal Tower in Tyre wounded nine people, while another raid on Zrarieh, in Sidon, wounded a child, the National News Agency reported.

Israel has kept up its bombardment of Lebanon despite a November 27 US-brokered ceasefire that sought to end more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah.

One killed in Israeli assault on northern Gaza

A medical source at al-Shifa Hospital has told Al Jazeera that a Palestinian was killed in an Israeli drone attack on Jabalia al-Balad.

At least 13 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip since morning.

Israeli air raids intensify across Gaza City

In a particularly devastating attack, an air strike targeted a room at a Remal clinic located in the heart of Gaza City. The room was housing a displaced family and was struck without any prior warning.

We understand that six Palestinians were killed while 15 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are now receiving treatment at al-Ahli Hospital – an area that is very close to the marked red zone designated by the Israeli army.

There has also been a surge in Israeli army activity elsewhere, especially in the central region where we are. A residential building in Nuseirat was attacked, and in the Bureij refugee camp, two houses were targeted and levelled to the ground.

We understand that, in Bureij, three Palestinians were killed and children were reportedly wounded.

GHF food aid resumes in Gaza

The controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says it’s distributing food again at its sites in the Strip after the US and Israeli-backed group suspended operations on Sunday, claiming two US contractors were hurt in an attack at one of its sites.

“All we know from yesterday was that operations were suspended at four of its sites. And now, all of a sudden, there is a statement that appears on their website [that services have resumed],” Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, said.

Mahmoud said most people here in Gaza are “off the grid, without reliable internet access”. “Relying solely on updates posted on a website is ineffective when social media is far more accessible,” he added.

At least 750 Palestinians have been killed by attacks targeting the aid distribution sites since May 27.

Weaponising food is part of the Israeli policy on Gaza

Netanyahu cannot seem to be going against Trump’s wishes, especially as he prepares to meet him for what is being set up as a very important meeting for Israel’s regional agenda, not just that on Gaza.

There are disagreements within the Israeli cabinet which it will find difficult to adopt, especially on the issues of redeployment and food aid distribution.

Weaponising food is part of the Israeli policy on Gaza.

The Israeli cabinet wants to be able to decide how much food goes into Gaza and who would receive it, and giving back agency to the international organisations, to the UN, and the Palestinian Red Crescent would take away that leverage from the Israeli government.

What is happening in Gaza?

  • At least 14 people have been killed in Gaza in Israeli attacks today.
  • One person has been killed in an Israeli attack on a residential apartment in Tal al-Hawa, southwest of Gaza City.
  • Medical sources say six people were killed after Israeli forces targeted a clinic in central Gaza City’s Remal.
  • Two Palestinians have been killed and many wounded in an Israeli attack on a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.

Houthis vow to continue Gaza support until Israeli attacks end

A senior Houthi official has reaffirmed the group’s commitment to Palestinians, saying operations to support Gaza will not stop until Israeli attacks on the enclave end and the siege is lifted.

On Sunday, the Yemeni group said it had fired a ballistic missile at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport. Later, the Israeli army targeted the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Isa and as-Salif along the Red Sea coast, as well as the Ras Kanatib power plant.

It said it also struck a radar system on the Galaxy Leader ship, which was seized by the Houthis and remains docked in Hodeidah.

The Houthis, who control Sanaa as well as large parts of western and northern Yemen, have been carrying out missile and drone attacks against Israel since November 2023 in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Two people killed near aid site in southern Gaza

Gaza’s emergency services officials say two Palestinians have been killed by Israeli gunfire near an aid centre north of Rafah. Another 20 have been wounded.

Settlers storm Al-Aqsa Mosque compound

Israeli settlers have stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem under the protection of Israeli police.

Settlers are Israeli citizens living illegally on private Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Al-Aqsa has become a regular target of visits by right-wing Israeli politicians and settlers, who storm the compound on an almost daily basis and perform religious rituals under the protection of Israeli forces.

Under the decades-old status quo maintained by Israeli authorities, Jews and other non-Muslims are allowed to visit the compound during specified hours, but they are not permitted to pray there or display religious symbols.

A recap of recent developments

  • Israeli forces have killed at least 82 Palestinians in Gaza, including 39 people in intensified attacks on Gaza City, as well as 10 others waiting for food aid.
  • Israeli forces also bombed three ports and a power plant in Yemen, as well as southern and eastern Lebanon.
  • The crew of a Liberia-flagged vessel abandoned ship and were rescued after coming under attack in the Red Sea.
  • US President Donald Trump told reporters that there is a “good chance” that Israel and Hamas could reach a ceasefire deal this week.
  • BRICS members called for an immediate, “unconditional” ceasefire in Gaza and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Palestinian territory.
  • The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is preparing to set sail again towards Gaza, weeks after Israel intercepted a previous ship taking humanitarian aid to the enclave and illegally seized it.
