- Israel’s relentless bombardment of Gaza continued with at least 91 Palestinians killed in attacks across the Strip on Wednesday, including 77 aid seekers.
- One attack saw Israeli forces kill at least 51 people seeking aid and injure 648 others as they approached the Zikim crossing for aid trucks entering north Gaza.
- Gaza hospitals record seven new deaths from “famine and malnutrition”, raising the total hunger-related death toll to 154, including 89 children, since October 2023.
- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country will recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, citing the need for a two-state solution to the conflict.
- Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 60,138 people and wounded 146,269 others. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack, and more than 200 were taken captive.
Record number of Democrats join failed bid to block weapons sales to Israel
While the US Senate has rejected a bid to halt arms sales to Israel, the 27 Democrats who voted in favour of the resolution to block weapons shipments was a record number.
Commenting on the strong support from Democrats, independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who introduced the two resolutions voted on Wednesday night, said “the tide is turning”.
“The American people do not want to spend billions to starve children in Gaza,” Sanders said.
“The Democrats are moving forward on this issue, and I look forward to Republican support in the near future,” he said.

US Senate rejects bills to block arms sales to Israel over Gaza
US Senate lawmakers have failed to pass two resolutions that would have blocked arms sales to Israel in response to civilian casualties in Gaza and the ongoing starvation of the territory’s population.
Vermont independent Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the bills, which failed to pass by 73 to 24 and 70 to 27 in the 100-member chamber in voting late on Wednesday.
All votes in favour of Wednesday’s resolutions came from Democrats, with all of President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans opposed.
Despite the loss, Sanders said he was pleased the majority of Democrats backed the effort this time around.
“The tide is turning. The American people do not want to spend billions to starve children in Gaza,” Sanders said.
“The Democrats are moving forward on this issue, and I look forward to Republican support in the near future,” he added.
Israel blasts Canada over plan to recognise Palestinian statehood
Israel has slammed an announcement by Canada that the country will recognise a Palestinian state, which follows the announcements by both France and the United Kingdom.
All three are expected to recognise the State of Palestine come September at the UN General Assembly.
Israel says this is counterproductive and concedes to Hamas, and is a reward for them. It also says it is counterproductive to achieving any sort of ceasefire deal or framework to bring about the release of the remaining captives in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he has worked his entire political career to block the establishment of a Palestinian state, and that he and his right-wing coalition would continue to block that move any time they are in office.
It is worth mentioning that this is all part of the growing international pressure on Israel to end its war on Gaza because of the dire and catastrophic humanitarian situation that has unfolded as a result.
Israeli forces kill 2 Palestinians after West Bank settler attack
The Israeli military has shot two Palestinians dead in the occupied West Bank town of Silwad, east of Ramallah, according to medical sources speaking to our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues.
Earlier, Israeli settlers had stormed the Palestinian community, resulting in deadly confrontations breaking out.
We will bring you more information when we have it.
Several killed as Israeli military attacks tents housing displaced Palestinians
The Israeli military has continued its bombardment of the Gaza Strip overnight, carrying out several deadly attacks in the hours since midnight local time (21:00 GMT), according to our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues.
The attacks include:
- A displaced Palestinian family was killed in an Israeli drone strike on their tent in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza. The victims included a man, woman and their two children.
- At least two people were killed and others injured in an Israeli strike on a second tent housing displaced Palestinians south of Gaza City.
- In al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis in the south of the enclave, at least two people were killed and others injured in a strike on a tent shelter.
- Three people were killed and others injured in an attack on an apartment building in the as-Saftawi area, north of Gaza City.
New poll shows plunging US public support for Israel’s war on Gaza
A new poll from the research firm Gallup suggests that only 32 percent of Americans approve of Israel’s military action in Gaza, a 10 percentage-point drop from September 2024, as anger over atrocities against Palestinians and the starvation crisis grows.
The survey, released on Tuesday, also showed an enormous partisan divide over the issue. Seventy-one percent of respondents who identified as members of the Republican Party said they approve of Israel’s conduct, compared with 8 percent of Democrats.
