Algeria, a major oil and gas exporter, has signed agreements with national and international companies to develop two solar energy projects with a total capacity of 3,000 MW.
Given the intensity of Algeria’s sun, the southern part of the country may be home to some of the world’s most productive solar power plants.
To reduce dependence on oil and gas, the North African country aims to reach 15,000 MW of renewable capacity by 2035, with 27% of its electricity coming from wind, solar and hydropower.
Currently, only 3% of our energy comes from these sources.
Companies developing new power plants are contractually obligated to source at least 35% of construction components in Algeria to promote local development.
