Representatives of the Ethiopian federal government and Tigray region have begun talks in Addis Ababa to resolve delays in implementing the Pretoria peace agreement.
The agreement, negotiated between the parties and signed in South Africa in November 2022, follows the conflict between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the federal government, which began in November 2020.
The aim is to bring stability to the difficulties in implementing the agreement led to heightened tensions and the African Union to act as a mediator in negotiations to find a solution.
The Pretoria Agreement addresses issues such as power-sharing, regional autonomy and resource management, and aims to resolve the root causes of conflict through negotiation.
The interim president of the Tigray regional government, Getashu Reda, has announced that there will be no further bilateral talks with the federal government until all outstanding issues are resolved.
Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo are part of the mediation team.
