The United Nations has called on Gambian parliamentarians to withdraw a bill that would repeal the ban on female genital mutilation (FGM).
Gambia’s parliament began consideration of the bill on Monday.
In The Gambia she had her FGM banned in 2015.
Influential Islamic clerics have called for the ban to be lifted, while women’s rights activists want it to remain in place.
According to the United Nations, more than three-quarters of Gambian women and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 have undergone genital mutilation.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the bill as abhorrent.
The Gambia said it was critical to continue to protect the rights and dignity of all people, especially women and girls.
