Kenya: Mid-air plane collision kills student pilot and trainer

A student pilot and a flight instructor were killed in a collision with a passenger plane over Kenya’s capital Nairobi, police said.

The flight school plane later crashed in Nairobi National Park, killing two people.

The Safari Link passenger plane took off with 44 people on board and returned to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.

According to the airline, all 39 passengers and five crew members were uninjured.

The aircraft was flying toward Diani on the Kenyan coast when it “felt a loud impact sound immediately after takeoff.”

A Cessna aircraft operated by Ninety-Nines Flying School crashes in a wildlife park approximately 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the airport.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) said the accident occurred at around 10:05 a.m. local time (7:05 GMT) on Tuesday.

The Air Accidents Bureau and police announced that they have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Wilson Airport is a small but very busy airport in the nation’s capital, primarily serving domestic flights.

Over the years, there have been several accidents involving small aircraft flying from airports.
