Kenya: Police officers arrested for defying drinking ban

Four Kenyan police officers have been arrested after drinking alcohol at a bar. This violates an order that ordered the closure of all bars in central Kenya’s Kirinyaga district.

County Governor Ann Weigle issued the order last Saturday after more than 20 people died in the county after ingesting alcohol laced with ethanol.

“Today I have ordered the closure of all bars in Kirinyaga to pave the way for re-inspection. Bars that are found to have died will not be allowed to reopen,”

Waiguru said Saturday during a mass burial of some of the victims.

On Sunday, police officers were arrested during a raid on a bar after a resident tipped off authorities.

The owner of the bar was also arrested, but several customers escaped arrest, private news site Citizen Digital reported.
