  • Israeli forces continue bombarding Gaza a day after killing 95 Palestinians across the Strip.
  • Criticisms of Israel’s plan to set up an internment camp in Gaza are growing, with Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid saying it would amount to a “concentration camp” if Palestinians there are not allowed to leave.
  • Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 58,026 people and wounded 138,520, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.

Israeli attacks kill 28 across Gaza

At least 28 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since dawn, medical sources told our colleagues on the ground.

Among those, 17 were killed in Gaza City and areas in the northern Gaza Strip.

Israel’s Ben-Gvir says humanitarian city plan is ‘spin’ for ceasefire deal

Far-right Israeli security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, says the outrage about the “humanitarian city” is “spin” aiming to hide the ceasefire deal that is currently being negotiated.

Over the past week, Israel and Hamas have been negotiating, through mediators, to secure a ceasefire deal. According to reports, the main issue being discussed is the Israeli army’s withdrawal from the enclave during the ceasefire.

At least 360 medical personnel arrested in Gaza

Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that at least 360 medical personnel have been arrested by Israel inside the enclave since the start of the war and those detained are “living in tragic and harsh conditions”.

Among the detainees are doctors, further depriving thousands of wounded Palestinians of medical care, the ministry said in a statement.

It called for urgent international intervention “to criminalise the occupation’s practices against imprisoned medical staff and to pressure for their release”.

The Israeli army has killed at least 1,400 healthcare and medical workers across Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023, according to the ministry.

Israeli, Palestinian foreign ministers to attend EU meeting

Foreign ministers from Israel and Palestine will be present at a meeting in Brussels between the European Union and its southern neighbours today.

It would be the first time since the Gaza war began in October 2023 that Israeli and Palestinian ministers have attended a high-level meeting in the same room.

The Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority (PA) confirmed the attendance of Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin but denied media reports that any meeting with his Israeli counterpart was on the agenda.

A statement said Shahin would give a speech “focusing on the suffering of the Palestinian people under the ongoing war of extermination and displacement in the Gaza Strip, the systematic starvation policy practised by the occupying state, and the financial blockade imposed on the Palestinian government”.

The office for Israel’s foreign minister said that alongside the ministerial meeting, Gideon Saar would hold talks with the EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, and Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica.

Gaza death toll rises

Israeli attacks across Gaza have killed 23 Palestinians since dawn, medical sources told our colleagues on the ground.

A source at Al-Shifa Hospital reported that three people, including a woman, were killed in an Israeli attack near the university college in southern Gaza City.

Lawyer says detained Dr Hussam Abu Safia in critical condition

The health of Dr Hussam Abu Safia, a prominent paediatrician and the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has deteriorated significantly while in Israeli detention, his lawyer says in a statement posted on social media.

Abu Safia was detained in December when Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital, taking him, other medical staff and patients into custody and forcing the last major hospital in northern Gaza out of service.

According to his lawyer, Abu Safia has lost more than 40kg (88lb) since his arrest, dropping to about 60kg (132lb). He was reportedly severely beaten on June 24 at Israel’s Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank, sustaining injuries to his ribs, face and back. His requests for medical care and cardiology tests for an irregular heartbeat were denied.

He remains in solitary confinement under harsh conditions, deprived of sunlight and still wearing winter clothes in the summer heat. His lawyer warned that Abu Safia and many other Palestinian detainees are in grave condition.

Aid reaching Gaza not enough for Palestinians

The only thing the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is distributing is flour, rice, oil and a couple of other food items, which is not enough for a Palestinian family.

Most of these Palestinians who approach these distribution points do not receive the food, but at the same time, they’re risking their lives, they’re being shot and wounded.

Every single time these distribution points open, Palestinians are killed. Earlier today, at least two Palestinians were killed at a GHF point in Rafah, and dozens wounded.

Now the only thing that is being distributed is food. There are no shelter items, no medications and no clean water.

Trucks are not entering Gaza and Palestinians are waiting every single day for any news about more trucks. Whatever is coming in is definitely not enough.

Israeli blockade increasing threat of diseases in Gaza

Israel’s blockade on medical supplies is rapidly increasing the threat of diseases in Gaza.

The controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is providing limited amounts of food but does not give out medicine, shelter or water. The WHO says destroyed health facilities and access to clean water has increased the risk of meningitis spreading.

As Israel prepares to force the entire population of Gaza to the south, those who have been forcibly displaced are already living in harsh conditions.

“In overcrowded shelters in Gaza, where hundreds of displaced families share limited space with little access to clean water or sanitation, cases of meningitis are rising. And children are particularly at risk,” said Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Deir el-Balah.

“As negotiating teams focus on a ceasefire and the release of captives, the children of Gaza are facing a death sentence, one that comes quietly, painfully and without warning.”

Senior Israeli politicians aware of psychological impact of ‘concentration camp’ comments

It is significant that two prominent Israeli politicians have used the term “concentration camp” to describe Israel’s plans for Gaza, given the psychological impact of such statements.

There is serious opposition for this plan because many like Yair Lapid and Ehud Olmert believe that it would cause irreparable damage for Israel by ethnically cleansing Palestinians and trying to expel them from Gaza.

This is something Israel cannot walk back on. This is in addition to other considerations, including the fact that the Israeli opposition is fed up with Netanyahu.

There is also bringing up the issue of how much this would cost. In fact, Netanyahu himself has been reported to have been outraged by the proposal presented by the army about how to build this concentration camp.

The army would reportedly need a year and up to $6bn to build it on the ruins of Rafah. Netanyahu has given the army some time to present a different plan that costs less and can be done quicker. This is despite the fact that insistence on this could harm the ongoing ceasefire talks.

Israeli army estimates ‘humanitarian city’ will take ‘more than a year’ to build

According to the Israeli news outlet Ynet, the Israeli army estimates that a “humanitarian city” in southern Gaza would take “more than a year” to establish.

Ynet reported that representatives from the army met in a mini-cabinet meeting on Sunday night and laid out the possible timeframe and estimated that it would cost $10bn to $15bn to create.

The news outlet, quoting officials who attended the meeting, said Netanyahu was “furious” with the assessment and asked the army to give him an improved plan that was “shorter, cheaper and more practical”.

Last week, Israel’s defence minister announced plans to build the so-called humanitarian city on the ruins of Rafah. Once inside the encampment, Palestinians would not be allowed to leave except to go to other countries.

Humanitarian agencies, lawyers and international leaders have condemned the plan. Some are calling it akin to a “concentration camp”.

Palestinian groups say talks must lead to end of war, full Israeli withdrawal

Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad say any indirect negotiations with Israel must result in a complete end to the war on Gaza, a full Israeli withdrawal from the territory, the reopening of crossings between Israel and Gaza, and the start of reconstruction.

The two groups made the statement after a meeting between their delegations on Sunday.

Israel says it hits Gaza more than 100 times in past 24 hours

The Israeli army says its warplanes have attacked Gaza more than 100 times in the past 24 hours, claiming “terrorist organisations” are the targets.

It added that ground advances are also continuing across the besieged enclave, especially in the north.

The Israeli army said fighting is ongoing in the mostly destroyed Shujayea and Zeitoun neighbourhoods of Gaza City and in Beit Hanoon and Jabalia in the North Gaza governorate.

Israeli attack kills 2 people near aid centre

At least two people have been killed and many wounded in an Israeli attack near an aid centre northwest of Rafah in southern Gaza, ambulance and emergency services tell our colleagues on the ground.

What’s happening in Gaza right now?

In the past few hours:

  • The Nasser Medical Complex says a Palestinian has been killed and many wounded when an Israeli drone bombed a tent for displaced people west of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.
  • Invading Israeli forces continue to shell the eastern areas of Gaza City.
  • Israeli artillery shelling accompanied by gunfire has targeted an area west of Khan Younis.
  • The Israeli army has carried out a demolition operation against a residential area in the Saudi neighbourhood, west of Rafah in southern Gaza.
  • Explosions have been reported in Jabalia in northern Gaza.

Israeli soldiers arrest Palestinians during raids on West Bank

Israeli forces have launched more raids across the occupied West Bank, arresting Palestinians, including former detainee Muhammad Nafeh Duweikat, who was rearrested during a dawn operation at his home in Nablus, the Wafa news agency reports.

Two more young Palestinians were arrested from Rammun and Ein Arik in the Ramallah and el-Bireh governorate after their homes were searched and ransacked, Wafa said.

In Yabad in the Yenin governorate, soldiers attacked a young man and were accused of stealing his money. They also raided several homes and allegedly seized more money and gold, the report said.
