Here’s where things stand on Tuesday 22 July 2025:
- Israeli forces killed more than 60 Palestinians, including 11 aid seekers, in attacks across Gaza on Monday, as tanks pushed into southern and eastern districts of Deir el-Balah for the first time.
- Hamas says it’s working around the clock and engaging mediators “in order to stop famine and stop this criminal war”.
- UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini says doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers in Gaza are “fainting due to hunger and exhaustion”.
- The foreign ministers of 25 countries, and the European Union commissioner, have called for an immediate end to the war, saying that suffering in Gaza has “reached new depths”.
- Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 59,029 people and wounded 142,135. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023 attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.
Baby and child die from malnutrition in Gaza
Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting that a child from Khan Younis in the enclave’s south has died from malnutrition.
They are also reporting that a 40-day-old baby has died in the north of the Gaza Strip, also from malnutrition.
Cases of starvation are rising in Gaza as Israel’s continued siege is worsening the hunger crisis, with health authorities announcing that at least 19 people died from malnutrition on Sunday alone.
The World Food Programme says that 90,000 women and children in Gaza are in urgent need of treatment for malnutrition.

French FM calls for foreign media access to Gaza
France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has urged Israel to allow foreign media into the besieged Palestinian territory of Gaza, as warnings of famine mount after 21 months of war.
“I ask that the free and independent press be allowed to access Gaza to show what is happening there and to bear witness,” he told France Inter radio in an interview.
Since the war began, Israel has only permitted a handful of foreign journalists to enter Gaza, mostly by being “embedded” with the Israeli army.
Meanwhile, Palestinian journalists who have been covering the conflict from Gaza for the past five months have done so under intense Israeli attacks that have cost many of them their lives.
Red Crescent says 118 aid seekers wounded, 1 killed
The Palestine Red Crescent Society says medical workers at al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City have treated 118 wounded Palestinians since the early hours of this morning, who were injured waiting for aid near Nabulsi Junction in the southwestern part of the city.
They said one person was killed.
WHO says Israeli army hit its staff residence, warehouse
The World Health Organization’s staff residence in the southern city of Deir el-Balah was attacked three times on Monday, Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said.
“Israeli military entered the premises, forcing women and children to evacuate on foot toward al-Mawasi amid active conflict. Male staff and family members were handcuffed, stripped, interrogated on the spot and screened at gunpoint,” Ghebreyesus said on X.
Two WHO staff and two family members were detained. Three were later released, while one staff member remains in detention, he said.
His comments come after the Israeli army issued this week a forced evacuation order for areas of Deir el-Balah – the main hub for humanitarian efforts in the Strip – and launched a ground operation there, the first since the start of the war. The order affected several WHO premises, “pushing the health system further towards collapse”, Ghebreyesus said.
WHO’s main warehouse, located in Deir el-Balah, which is within the evacuation zone, was also damaged yesterday when an attack caused explosions and a fire inside, he added.
Israeli forces arrest Palestinians in West Bank raids
Wafa is reporting that Israeli forces have arrested several Palestinians in early morning raids across the occupied West Bank. They include:
- Four Palestinians from the towns of Beitunia and Kafr Nima, in Ramallah
- Three Palestinians from Zaatara town, in Bethlehem
- Two Palestinians arrested in an Israeli raid on Nablus
Israeli forces also stormed the town of Tammun, south of Tubas. No details of arrests or damage have been reported yet, Wafa said.

Houthis fire missile at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport
Yemen’s Houthi group says it launched a ballistic missile at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv.
“We targeted [Ben Gurion airport] with a hypersonic ballistic missile. Our operations will continue until the war stops and the siege on Gaza is lifted,” Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a statement.
The Israeli military said it had intercepted a missile launched from Yemen following the activation of air raid sirens in multiple regions across the country.
The launch from Yemen follows an Israeli military attack on Houthi targets in Hodeidah port on Monday in its latest assault on the Iran-backed group, which has been launching missiles against Israel and attacking ships in the Red Sea in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
AFP journalists at risk of starving to death
The AFP Journalists’ Association has warned that its journalists working in Gaza are at risk of dying due to hunger.
One of the 10 freelancers working for the French news agency posted a message on social media on July 19, saying: “I don’t have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I can’t work.”
AFP warned that most of its workers in the Strip do not have the physical capacity to do their job any longer, and the situation is worsening. “Their heartbreaking calls for help are now daily.”
Despite the journalists receiving a monthly salary, there is either nothing to buy or goods are only available at completely exorbitant prices, the association said. “We risk learning of their deaths at any moment, and this is unbearable for us.
“Since AFP was founded in August 1944, we have lost journalists in conflicts, we have had wounded and prisoners in our ranks, but none of us can remember seeing a colleague die of hunger. We refuse to see them die.”
Israeli forces kill 2 Palestinians in attack on Deir el-Balah
A medical source at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital has told our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic that an Israeli air attack killed two Palestinians and injured several others in Deir el-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.
As we’ve been reporting, Israel has launched a ground invasion of Deir el-Balah for the first time since October 2023.
Israeli forces kill 13 Palestinians in northern Gaza bombing
Al Jazeera Arabic’s correspondent is reporting that 13 Palestinians were killed in an early morning Israeli artillery attack on people sheltering in tents in the Shati refugee camp, in Gaza City.
Palestinian media reported that 25 others were also injured in the bombing.
Twenty-five countries call for immediate end to Gaza war
The foreign ministers of 25 countries, including several Israeli allies, have signed a joint statement calling for an immediate end to the war in Gaza.
“We condemn the drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, seeking to meet their most basic needs of water and food,” the statement read.
“The Israeli Government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable,” the foreign ministers added, calling on Israel to lift restrictions on aid trucks.
Israel rejected the statement, saying it was “disconnected from reality and sends the wrong message to Hamas”.
