LIVE UPDATES: Israel pounds Gaza; Trump, Netanyahu tout plan to displace Palestinians

Mazzaltov World News provides you with the latest live coverage of Current Affairs, Sports, Health, Weather, Entertainment, Business and Travel News from around the world.

Here’s where things stand on Tuesday 8 July 2025:

  • US President Donald Trump has held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, with both leaders touting their controversial proposal to push besieged Palestinians into neighbouring countries.
  • Their meeting comes as Israeli forces killed 60 Palestinians on Monday, and Israeli negotiators and Hamas held indirect talks in Qatar for a ceasefire in Gaza.
  • The Houthis in Yemen have damaged a second ship in as many days in the Red Sea, targeting a vessel with rocket-propelled grenades.
  • Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 57,523 people and wounded 136,617, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023 attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.

Israeli forces demolish building near Jerusalem

They have stormed the town of Anata, northeast of Jerusalem, and demolished an under-construction building, according to Wafa.

The raid in the Salam neighbourhood included several bulldozers, Wafa reported.

It said Israeli authorities had decided more than a year ago to prevent the completion of the building, owned by Palestinian citizens Muhammad Hamza Ghaith and Yassin Ibrahim Abu Shamsiyeh.

Deadly attack on Israeli soldiers stirs tensions in Israel

The Israeli army has announced the killing of five soldiers in northern Gaza. Fourteen others were injured, including at least two described as being in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation has been opened, and what we understand is that the Israeli soldiers were attacked; then the unit that tried to come to their rescue was also attacked, and then a third group of soldiers that tried to extract them was also attacked.

So this was a complex attack that happened 500 metres (1,640 feet) away from the northern fence of Gaza. Beit Hanoon is an area that has been under Israeli military occupation since the beginning of the war in October 2023.

So there is a lot of commentary about that by Israeli politicians – that this is a completely outrageous event and, right now, according to some in the opposition, the military is in Gaza and the soldiers are dying not to protect Israel but to protect Netanyahu’s coalition government.

Armed wing of Hamas hails deadly attack on Israeli soldiers in northern Gaza

Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, says the attack in the northern city of Beit Hanoon that killed at least five Israeli soldiers yesterday evening was “an additional blow … in an area the [Israeli] occupation thought was safe”.

“The battle of attrition waged by our fighters against the enemy from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip will inflict additional losses on it every day. Even if it miraculously succeeded recently in freeing its soldiers from hell, it may fail later, leaving us with additional prisoners,” he said in a statement published by Hamas on Telegram.

The spokesperson added that the “brave resistance fighters” and Palestinian civilians in Gaza are the only ones who can determine the enclave’s future.

“The most foolish decision Netanyahu could make would be to keep his forces inside the Gaza Strip,” he added.

Israeli forces arrest Palestinians, set fire to house in West Bank raids

The Wafa news agency is reporting that Israeli soldiers set fire to a house in the Nur Shams refugee camp, in Tulkarem.

Witnesses told Wafa that the house in the al-Manshiyya neighbourhood belongs to the Ghanem family, who were forced to flee.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces arrested two Palestinians after raiding their homes in the town of al-Khader, south of Bethlehem.

Israeli forces also arrested a young man from the Am’ari refugee camp, after raiding several towns in the Ramallah and el-Bireh governorate, Wafa reported.

Israeli attacks in Gaza City leave hospitals overwhelmed

Dozens of Palestinians injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza City, including many children, have been taken to al-Ahli Hospital for treatment.

The influx of patients means that patients are being treated on the floor of a tent outside the hospital.

Health Ministry calls for protection of trucks expected to enter Gaza with medical supplies

Trucks carrying medicines and medical supplies are scheduled to enter Gaza today through the World Health Organization, the Health Ministry in the territory says in a statement.

“The items expected to arrive are of great importance and urgent need to continue providing medical care to the wounded and sick and save lives,” it said on Telegram.

They do not contain any food items, it added, calling on people “to make every effort to protect the convoy, to prevent any interference with the trucks and to enable their safe arrival to hospitals to save the lives of the sick and wounded”.

Israeli drone attack kills two Palestinians in southern Gaza

Two Palestinians have been killed and one injured when an Israeli drone bombed a tent where displaced Palestinians were staying west of Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis.

That’s according to the Nasser Medical Complex source speaking to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic.

Israel’s Ben-Gvir calls on Netanyahu to withdraw from talks with Hamas

We have reported earlier that a roadside bomb killed at least five Israeli soldiers in northern Gaza’s Beit Hanoon yesterday evening.

Israeli minister of national security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, reacted to the news, calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “immediately return the delegation that went to negotiate with the Hamas murderers in Doha”.

“There is no need to negotiate with those who murder our fighters – they should be crushed to the bone, starved to death, and not suffocated with humanitarian aid that gives them oxygen,” he said in a statement published on Telegram.

He also called for a complete siege of Gaza, displacement of Palestinians and settlement of Israeli citizens in the enclave, saying “these are the keys to complete victory, and not a reckless deal that will release thousands of terrorists and withdraw [the Israeli army] from territories conquered with the blood of our fighters.”

Netanyahu meets Trump – Could a Gaza ceasefire deal emerge?

Could Netanyahu’s third trip to the US during President Donald Trump’s administration mean a ceasefire in Gaza is close at hand?

As Netanyahu lands in Washington, DC, for a week of discussions on topics such as Gaza and Iran, what pressures is he facing at home?

Largest Israeli demolition since 1967 gets under way in the West Bank

Imagine trying to go home, and each time you get closer, a soldier points their gun at you. And you have no idea if your house is still standing.

That’s what some Palestinians in the occupied West Bank are going through right now.

The largest Israeli home demolition since 1967 is under way, as we speak. Three refugee camps are being emptied.

Israeli soldiers have been pushing deeper into Jenin, Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps and forcing people out. Some are given just hours to collect a lifetime’s belongings.

All three camps are now off-limits. Soldiers shoot at anyone who tries to return.

We don’t know the full scale of the destruction. But based on local authorities and army demolition orders, we know that 690 homes have been completely demolished in Jenin, and 340 more are in the process of being demolished. In Tulkarem, 285 homes have been fully destroyed and 400 more are targeted. And in Nur Shams, 225 homes have been levelled.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced, and they have no idea when they will be allowed to return. And they fear they will return to a completely different camp than the one they left.

War-weary Palestinians hope for an end to Israeli attacks on Gaza

As we’ve been reporting, negotiators from Israel and Hamas are holding indirect talks in Doha for a ceasefire in Gaza.

In central Gaza, weary Palestinians said they hoped an end to the violence was close.

Majid Farwana, a displaced Palestinian, said he was “expecting good things”.

“We’re really tired, we have suffered and left our homes. Even though it’s destroyed, we’d like to clean it up and settle there at ease,” he said.

Another displaced Palestinian, Ahlam Farwana, echoed the same sentiment.

“We’re waiting by the minute, I swear. We’re suffering when getting water, suffering at charity kitchens, we’re suffering with everything. We’re waiting and asking God to end this suffering and for the end of the war. That’s enough. No more than that. We’re tired,” she said.
