Here’s where things stand on Saturday 14 June 2025:
- Iran and Israel trade missiles and air strikes as the conflict that’s killed dozens escalates with no end in sight.
- At least 80 people – including 20 children – have been killed in Iran and four in Israel, with hundreds wounded on both sides in the ongoing tit-for-tat attacks.
- US President Donald Trump has lauded Israel’s premeditated assault and warned of much worse to come unless Iran quickly accepts the sharp downgrading of its nuclear programme.
- Continuing Iran-US nuclear talks is unjustifiable while “barbarous” Israeli attacks persist on the country, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says.
- The Israeli military says its air strikes on Iran killed more than 20 Iranian army and Revolutionary Guards commanders.
(19:53) Israeli public told to remain in close proximity of shelters
The Israeli military has now instructed residents throughout Israel to remain close to protected spaces until further notice.
We will bring you more information as we get it.
(19:50) Israel’s widening target list is message its ‘long hand can reach everywhere’
These new locations where Iran’s air defences are reportedly being activated – Bandar Abbas, Isfahan, Ahvaz, Maragheh – these are all towns and cities, some of them historic, with a lot of value.
Israel is trying to hit everywhere now in Iran. This is a message to the Iranian establishment that the long hand can reach everywhere, regardless of the characteristics of the targets.
We see in Bandar Abbas the port being hit, we see the Pars gas field being hit.
Oil refineries or cement factories or nuclear facilities or military infrastructure — everything is on the list.
This is escalating Netanyahu’s commitment in this war. He’s imposing on Iran a war of attrition.
Iran is, too, on its side, by launching these hundreds of rockets on a daily basis. Now, they’re saying there’s going to be a huge barrage launched towards Israel.
It’s a war of attrition from two sides. How much will they be able to sustain?

Iraqi military condemns Israeli violations of airspace as it continues to attack Iran
The Iraqi News Agency quoted the spokesperson for the head of the country’s army, saying that the Iraqi government reiterates its complete rejection of the violation of Iraqi airspace and its use in military attacks committed by Israel against Iran, or against any of the neighbouring regional countries.
The spokesperson continued that the Iraqi government is following up with international parties on all these “illegal” actions, which it considers a blatant violation of Iraqi sovereignty and the principles of international law, with their negative impact on stability and peace in the region.
Iranian President Pezeshkian speaks with Saudi Arabia’s bin Salman
Masoud Pezeshkian has held a phone call with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, IRNA reports.
“Since taking office as president, I have sought to strengthen peace, stability and security in the region, but the Zionist regime has disrupted and sabotaged every area where we wanted to achieve something,” Pezeshkian was quoted as saying.
Ties between Riyadh and Tehran have improved significantly since the two countries agreed to restore diplomatic relations in 2023 after years of animosity.
We are in a dangerous escalatory spiral
Israel is classifying its attacks on Iran as preemptive, claiming Iran was on the verge of being able to produce a nuclear weapon in violation of its international commitments, and so its attacks are legitimate, Robert Hamilton, head of Eurasia Research at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, tells Al Jazeera.
“The problem is the incentive now from the Iranian side is to go all out toward a nuclear weapon, because, the experience of the last years seeping into people’s minds in Tehran is, the only way to deter or prevent these attacks is to be a nuclear power and to threaten the nuclear response” he said.
“So we’re in this… very dangerous escalatory spiral … where the incentive on the Israeli part is to continue the strikes until the program is completely destroyed,” he said, adding that on the Iranian side, the incentive is to “find a means to damage or hurt Israel”
In the long run, he said Tehran could become “doubly convinced” that developing nuclear capability is its only “real protection”.

‘This war in Israel-Iran should end’: Trump
The US president says he spoke to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin about the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
“He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end,” Trump wrote in a social media post.

US official: We ‘hope the Iranians will come to the table soon’
A senior US official has confirmed that the nuclear talks that had been scheduled to take place in Oman on Sunday will no longer be happening.
The official told The Associated Press news agency that although the talks were off, “we remain committed to talks and hope the Iranians will come to the table soon,” speaking anonymously to discuss diplomatic matters.
Oman’s foreign minister Badr al-Busaidi had said earlier that the sixth round of talks would not be happening in light of the strikes being traded between Israel and Iran, adding that “diplomacy and dialogue remain the only pathway to lasting peace”.

‘Drop Israel’: How military escalation with Iran divides Trump’s base
Several right-wing commentators and politicians in the United States are questioning the Israeli strikes on Iran and warning President Donald Trump against being dragged into a war that does not serve US interests.
Influential conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, seen as a major figure in Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, said the US should not support Netanyahu’s “war-hungry government”.
“If Israel wants to wage this war, it has every right to do so. It is a sovereign country, and it can do as it pleases. But not with America’s backing,” the Tucker Carlson Network morning newsletter read.

Anti-aircraft systems activated in Tabriz, Isfahan
Air defences have also been activated in Tabriz and Isfahan as they come under Israeli attack, Iranian news agency IRINN is reporting.
Earlier, we reported that Iranian anti-aircraft systems had been activated in the capital, Tehran, and the port city of Bandar Abbas, as they came under Israeli fire. Iranian media is reporting that explosions are being heard in Iran.
Israel said a short while ago that it had launched a new wave of attacks on Iran.

Macron speaks to Iran’s Pezeshkian, urges return to nuclear negotiations
French President Emmanuel Macron says he has spoken with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, and called on him “to return swiftly to the negotiating table to reach an agreement” over its nuclear programme.
In a post on X, the French leader said that negotiation was “the only viable path to de-escalation”.
“Iran’s nuclear program is a serious concern and must be resolved through negotiation,” he said.
He said that in light of the “serious risk” of regional destabilisation, he had called for French citizens and diplomatic facilities in Iran not to be targeted, and urged “the utmost restraint to avoid escalation”.
He said he had also called for the release of two French national, Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who had been “held hostages by the Iranian regime in unacceptable conditions for over three years”.
Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim condemns Israeli attacks in call with Iranian president
Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has held a phone call with his Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and renewed Doha’s denunciation of the Israeli attacks on Iran, the Emiri Diwan says in a statement.
Sheikh Tamim called the Israeli strikes a “blatant violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security and a clear breach of the rules and principles of international law”, the statement said.
The Qatari leader also called for a diplomatic solution to reach a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.

Iran’s southern city of Bandar Abbas has come under attack

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says that four critical buildings at the Isfahan nuclear site in Iran had been damaged in an attack on Friday, including a uranium conversion facility and a fuel plate fabrication plant.
“As in Natanz, no increase in off-site radiation expected,” the agency said in a post on X.
Israeli military: ‘At this hour, we are striking Iran’
An Israeli military spokesperson has said that Israel is currently striking Iran, and that its enemy “still has an arsenal that can cause grave damage to Israel”.
The spokesperson warned that Iranian attacks on Israel “are not behind us”.
Israel would continue to “attack and destroy” Iranian surface-to-surface missile sites, the spokesperson said.
We will bring you more soon.
Iran says it shot down 10 Israeli aircraft over past hour
The Iranian military says “10 hostile Israeli aircraft were shot down in various areas” of the country.
Attacks on energy infrastructure could ‘aggravate’ Iran’s struggling economy
Israel has used the pretext of defending itself and “made a big exaggeration of Iran’s nuclear threat”, international oil and energy consultant Manouchehr Takin tells Al Jazeera.
In the case of Iran’s South Pars gas field he said it provides the “domestic gas consumption of Iran, and hitting it will damage the surplus Iranian gas network for domestic and commercial purposes; so this is really an effort to cripple Iranian economy”.
Takin said, “We should remember that … the Iranian domestic economy [and] domestic gas supply is already suffering, not because of war, but because of the poor management”. He added that sanctions placed on Iran have also meant that equipment could not be purchased.
Houthi leader says deterring Israel is important for entire region
Abdel-Malik al-Houthi calls on countries across the Arab and Muslim worlds to back Iran in its war with Israel for their own interests.
“Deterring the enemy and averting its impunity and bullying to impose its violations is an important issue that benefits everyone in the region,” he said.

Netanyahu wants ‘to change the agenda’
“Israel is fighting yesterday’s war,” Akiva Eldar, an Israeli political analyst, tells Al Jazeera.
He said if the aim was to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities, it is too late, as “Iran has enough physical material to produce an atomic bomb.”
“What Netanyahu really wants, and maybe it sounds like a conspiracy theory, is to change the agenda, to change the headlines, and now, from a loser who refused to take responsibility to the biggest blunder, military blunder of October 7 … he is a rock star”, Eldar said.
However, Israel cannot destroy Iran’s nuclear programme alone, he said, adding that it is only the US that could do that if it decided to help Israel penetrate the underground facilities.
“I don’t believe that President Trump, Mr MAGA, is interested in getting involved in a regional war”, he said.

Flames rise from refinery after Israeli drone strike in southern Iran
Here’s the footage of the aftermath of the Israeli drone strike targeting the South Pars refinery in the southern port city of Kangan.
The footage, verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency, shows a large fire blazing, emitting huge plumes of smoke.
Iranian state media reported that Israel carried out a drone strike targeting a refinery in the South Pars gas field, located in Bushehr province, southern Iran, causing a fire to break out.
Iran’s Oil Ministry says the fire has now been extinguished.
What is the importance of Iran’s South Pars gas field?
As we reported earlier, Iranian media is saying Israeli strikes on the gas field, vital to Iran’s energy sector.
Here are some key facts about the South Pars gas field:
- It is the world’s largest natural gas field, shared with Qatar (where it’s known as the North Field).
- Its output exceeds 700 million cubic meters (24,720cu feet) per day, accounting for roughly 65–70 percent of Iran’s total natural gas production.
- This field is crucial for Iran’s domestic consumption, petrochemical industry, and gas exports.
- Other significant Iranian gas fields include North Pars (with large untapped reserves), Kish and Kangan. However, none match South Pars in scale or output.
Iran says it contained fire at gas refinery after Israeli attacks
The Iranian Oil Ministry says fires broke out at the Fajr Jam Gas Refinery and South Pars gas field in the Bushehr Province after Israeli strikes.
“Following this incident, with the rapid and timely presence of the oil industry operational forces, fire containment and control operations began and the fire was completely contained in the shortest possible time,” the ministry said in a statement, according to Tasnim news agency.
Erdogan: Israel under Netanyahu greatest threat to regional stability
Turkiye’s president has told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that the attack on Iran demonstrated that Israel, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, is the greatest threat to regional stability, Erdogan’s office said.
In a phone call, Erdogan told the Saudi crown prince that Israel must be stopped to reduce tensions and the nuclear dispute could only be resolved by negotiations.
A potentially devastating war could create waves of irregular migration to all countries in the region, Erdogan also said, according to the statement.
The Turkish president also spoke to his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, in a phone call, his office says.
During the call, he said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was trying to set the region on fire and to sabotage nuclear talks with attacks on Iran.
A statement by his office said Erdogan had also told Pezeshkian that Israel’s attacks aimed to divert attention from what he called a genocide in Gaza.
Israel’s latest attacks on an Iranian gas field takes tensions to a different level
So far, what we’ve seen Israel doing is boasting about hitting Iran’s nuclear facilities, military installations, surface-to-surface missiles, the factories of ballistic missiles, the assassination of top brass officials and nuclear scientists.
However, the latest strikes are on a civilian installation, and it would have devastating economic effects if the damage is extensive.
This backs up what Netanyahu was saying about an escalation, that the Iranians still haven’t seen the end of Israel’s attack … to degrade and eliminate Iran’s defensive and offensive capabilities.
30 military, one Red Crescent worker killed in northwest Iran, state media reports
At least 30 military personnel and one Red Crescent staff member have been killed in Israeli attacks on Iran’s northwestern province of East Azerbaijan, Iranian state media is reporting.
Fifty-five others were reportedly injured in the strikes.
Behram Sarmast, the province’s governor, told state television that the attacks had struck 19 locations across the province, mainly in the capital, Tabriz, which has been a major target for Israel.
Sarmast said that beyond the 12 strikes on Tabriz, the counties of Bostanabad, Shabestar, Azarshahr, Maragheh and Turkmenchay were also hit.
German government warns against further escalation in Middle East
The Foreign Ministry has issued its statement on X, saying further escalation in the Middle East is a real possibility.
It added that Iran’s nuclear programme poses a threat not just to Israel, but also to Saudi Arabia and the stability of the entire region.
The statement was issued after a visit by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to Saudi Arabia, where he met his counterpart.
Putin, Trump discuss Middle East tensions, Kremlin says
The Russian and US presidents discussed hostilities between Iran and Israel in a new telephone call, Russian news agencies quoted top Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov as saying.
Ushakov said Putin condemned Israeli attacks on Iran and the two leaders did not rule out returning to discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme.
The agencies quoted Ushakov as saying the two presidents spoke for about 50 minutes. He described the talk as meaningful and useful.
Saudi crown prince, UK PM discuss ‘gravely concerning situation’
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke to Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Saturday afternoon.
According to a UK readout of the conversation, “They discussed the gravely concerning situation in the Middle East and agreed on the need to de-escalate.”
“The Prime Minister updated on his conversations with partners so far and reiterated that the UK is poised to work closely with its allies in the coming days to support a diplomatic resolution,” it said.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy is expected to spend the day in talks with counterparts across the Middle East and elsewhere.
Iranian state media said Tehran has warned the United States, the United Kingdom, and France not to help Israel stop Iran’s strikes.
Moscow ready to help de-escalate situation, Lavrov tells Araghchi
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has told his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in a phone call that Moscow condemns Israel’s use of force against Iran and is ready to help de-escalate the situation in the Middle East.
“Russia is prepared to continue to work to resolve issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Lavrov expressed his condolences to Araghchi for the Iranians killed in the strikes, the statement said.
Targeting Iranian gas infrastructure would mark major escalation
Iranian news outlets have been reporting several Israeli strikes on the country’s energy infrastructure.
If confirmed, the attacks would mark a new chapter of escalation in the conflict that will likely send global energy prices soaring.
Iranian officials have previously warned that they will respond in-kind to strikes on the country’s energy sector. While not a major energy producer, Israel does have oil and gas fields that could be targeted by Iranian missiles.
Tehran may also retaliate against other Israeli economic assets.

Video confirms Israeli attack on key energy infrastructure in Iran
Footage has emerged showing the aftermath of an Israeli attack on Kangan port in the southern Bushehr Province in Iran.
A large fire can be seen raging with large plumes of dark smoke.
The port is located near Iran’s South Pars gas field, the world’s largest natural gas field.

‘Netanyahu likes to play games every now and then’
Iranian foreign policy analyst Mostafa Khoshcheshm says Israel has failed to bomb Iran’s missile reserves despite its ongoing attacks.
“Iran has so many missile towns and silos. It has tens of thousands of missiles – liquid and solid fuel missiles – and it [Israel] has failed in striking these stashes,” he said.
Khoshcheshm, who is also a professor of media studies in Tehran, dismissed Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s claims that the Iranian public wants a regime change.
“Netanyahu and other Israeli officials know that this is a mockery and they are pursuing other purposes, otherwise they would be fools to have such wishful thinking,” he told Al Jazeera.
“While I’m talking to you, tens of thousands of people are out celebrating Eid al-Ghadir – the start of the leadership of Imam Ali, the first Shia imam. Every now and then they chant slogans in support of Iran’s missile strikes and demand more missile strikes on Israel.”
Khoshcheshm said Netanyahu is aware that these attacks will not bring a regime change.
“They’re doing it to bring Tehran down to its knees on the negotiating table [on nuclear talks]. That’s why US President Trump acknowledged that they had been informed and are in full coordination [with Israel] while we were waiting for the latest round of talks on Sunday.
“This shows that the purpose is to target Iran’s independence and scientific progress in the nuclear industry. Netanyahu likes to play [these] games every now and then.”

What we know about Iranian reports of downing Israeli F35
Several Iranian news outlets have reported that Iran has downed an Israeli F35 – one of the world’s most advanced jets – but there has been no confirmation or an official, public statement by Iran’s military.
The official news agency IRNA as well as other sources, including Tasnim and Times of Tehran, have reported the news, citing a statement by the Iranian army to Iran’s public television.
There are also conflicting reports about the fate of the pilots of the purportedly downed jet. While some outlets have claimed that they have been captured after they ejected, other have said that they are unaccounted for.
There is no footage of the supposedly downed aircraft. Iran’s public TV’s report on the incident used generic videos of F35 jets.
Since the outbreak of the hostilities, social media users have been sharing fake images purporting to show destroyed Israeli aircraft.
If Iran indeed brought down an F35, it would be a major blow to Israel, which claims that it has total control over the Iranian airspace after disabling the country’s air defences.
Yesterday, an Israeli army spokesperson denied earlier reports of downed Israeli jets, dismissing accounts by what he called the “lying Iranian media”.

Croatian diplomat injured in Tel Aviv strikes: Foreign Minister
Croatia’s consul in Israel and his wife were lightly injured in Iran’s missile strikes on Tel Aviv, Croatia’s Foreign Minister Gordan Grlic Radman has said.
“I am shaken by the news that our consul and his wife were injured in the attack on Tel Aviv. The building they live in was hit,” he said on X.
“I spoke with them and, fortunately, their injuries are minor and they are not in any life-threatening condition.”
Grlic Radman added that his ministry was in constant contact with the Croatian embassy in Israel and was taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of its staff.
“We strongly condemn attacks on civilians and diplomatic facilities. We call for immediate de-escalation and restraint,” he asserted.
Israeli military says two rockets fired from Gaza

Mediator Oman confirms US-Iran nuclear talks cancelled
The round of negotiations between US and Iranian officials previously scheduled for Sunday will not take place, says Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi.
“But diplomacy and dialogue remain the only pathway to lasting peace,” Albusaidi wrote in a social media post.
Israeli attacks continue across the Gaza Strip
Here is a reminder that alongside its strikes on Iran, Israel has been continuing its attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Here is a summary of what’s been happening today in the besieged enclave:
- The Health Ministry reports that 90 people in Gaza have been killed and Israeli strikes have wounded 605 in the past 48 hours.
- Medics at Al-Awda and Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospitals told Al Jazeera that at least 15 people were killed as they tried to approach the GHF aid distribution site near the Netzarim Corridor.
- Four others were killed in an Israeli air strike targeting the tents of displaced people west of Gaza City near Al-Mashtal Hotel.

There is no question that the White House knew in advance that Israel would attack Iran
The US has tried to distance itself in immediate statements, saying that this was a unilateral act by Israel, but as we know, the United States provides the weaponry that Israel uses.
Also, when there was that retaliatory attack by Iran on Israel, the US admitted that it did assist in defending Israel, even activating the THAAD missile defence system.
What we know is that when it comes to the US involvement, the US president views these strikes by Israel on Iran as an opportunity, even an incentive, to go to the negotiating table.
Even though, as we know, the sixth round of indirect talks in Oman is off for the moment, the US president believes this is a way to stop further attacks by Israel on Iran.
Israel bombs Iranian gas field: Report
Semi-official news agency Mehr and other Iranian media outlets are reporting that fires have broken out after Israel bombed infrastructure at the South Pars gas field in southern Bushehr province.
We will bring you more on this as the situation develops.
The last 24 hours have been unsettling for Israelis
The Israeli army and the Israeli cabinet ministers have been very frank about saying that their target right now is the air defence systems in Iran, as well as the ballistic missiles.
They want to diminish Iran’s ability to fire back, because they’re quite aware of the psychological impact that the state of emergency in Israel has on ordinary Israelis, but also those missiles falling on neighbourhoods in the central area, where much of economic life is centred.
Schools are shut down, businesses are shut down, and now buildings are being destroyed.
So the target of many of those air strikes that we saw throughout the day in Iran, according to the Israeli army, has been Iran’s ability to strike back.
Israeli media silent on Iranian strike on Tel Aviv Defence Ministry complex
Live coverage from Fox News and visual analysis by The New York Times showed that a missile fired by Iran struck a section of Israel’s Defence Ministry complex in Tel Aviv late last night.
Despite these reports and circulating footage suggesting a hit on the Gush Dan area, Israeli media remains silent, likely constrained by strict military censorship rules that prohibit confirmation or discussion of such attacks.
During the live coverage by US-based Fox News, security forces were seen escorting the television crew away from the area and preventing it from further filming the scene, where one of the buildings within the Defence Ministry complex was struck.
Meanwhile, a visual investigation team from The New York Times stated that footage circulating on social media appears to show a strike in central Tel Aviv, including the area housing the Defence Ministry complex.
The footage prominently features the Marganit Tower, a well-known structure within the “Kirya” Defence Ministry compound.
Netanyahu issues new threats to Iran
The Israeli prime minister said Israel’s strikes have set Iran’s nuclear programme back, possibly by years, and that heavier blows were yet to come.
“We will hit every site and every target of the ayatollahs’ regime and what they have felt so far is nothing compared with what they will be handed in the coming days,” Netanyahu said in a video message.
He added that the military was now destroying Iran’s ability to manufacture ballistic missiles.
Blasts heard in more than 10 Iranian cities
Iran and Israel are currently striking each other.
Explosions have been heard in more than 10 Iranian cities, where attacks are reported to take place.
Part of those blast sounds could be related to targets being hit, and others could be air defences being activated.
Iranian officials say the country will continue its retaliatory action against Israel.
So far, we have heard ballistic missiles being launched from Iran to Israeli targets as well as drone attacks.
The Iranian people’s sentiment over what is going on is mixed.
Different people I talked to say they are angry, as some of the targets hit in Iran are not necessarily military or nuclear – they are rather residential buildings.
There is also anxiety and fear among the people.
Weeks ago, they were very hopeful when Iran started the trajectory of talks with the US that could pave the way to de-escalation of the situation.
Now, with the new developments, everybody has doubts.
Here’s what’s been happening
Here are the main developments over the last few hours:
- Iranian missiles struck multiple locations in Israel, resulting in at least four deaths and dozens of injuries in response to continued Israeli assaults on Iran.
- Iran says Israeli attacks have killed at least 80 people, including women and children, and injured more than 320 others after it targeted cities, military installations, and nuclear facilities.
- Israel’s military has warned that Iran’s military will likely launch another missile barrage at Israel in the coming hours.
- Israeli spokesperson Brigadier-General Effie Defrin says more than 40 Iranian sites were targeted, including air defence systems and command infrastructure.
- Three members of the elite Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have been killed during ongoing Israeli attacks in Zanjan province.
- Iran’s Foreign Ministry says it would be “meaningless” to join nuclear negotiations with the United States in Oman while it is under attack by Israel.
- The US has denied the Iranian allegation of being complicit in Israel’s attacks and told Tehran at the UN Security Council it would be “wise” to negotiate over its nuclear programme.
