Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon kills one: Report

One person has been killed in an Israeli drone strike on the town of Yater , according to the mayor, National News Agency is reporting.

According to the NNA, the victim, who has been identified as Abdel Latif Sweida, was removing debris in a home using a bulldozer when the attack took place.

Earlier , we reported that an Israeli drone hit a car near the city of Tyre, also in southern Lebanon.

Attack victims rushed to hospitals on donkey carts

Over the past hour, there has been a clear increase in Israeli air strikes.

In Gaza City, the Israeli military targeted a group of Palestinians and killed at least eight of them. Residents helped transport the wounded on donkey carts to al-Ahli Arab Hospital.

In Deir el-Balah, we heard a huge explosion. It took place near the city’s busiest market, where hundreds of people usually gather. Dozens were wounded. The courtyard of the city’s hospital has been in a state of emergency, with rescuers going back and forth from the scene of the attack.

There has also been a huge series of explosions heard from the city of Khan Younis, where the Israeli military is actively expanding ground operations.

Palestinian Foreign Ministry shares footage of Israeli shooting near diplomatic delegation in Jenin

The footage, shared by the ministry on its X platform, appears to show Israeli soldiers firing shots near the foreign diplomatic delegation.

Shouts are heard as the shots ring out, before members of the delegation rush away from the scene.

The ministry said the Israeli forces fired the shots to “intimidate” the delegation as it toured the camp.

More on European diplomatic delegation under fire in Jenin

We now have more information on the reported Israeli gunfire on a diplomatic delegation in Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

According to Wafa news agency, Israeli soldiers fired five bullets towards the delegation, which was made up of officials from numerous European and Arab states. The report did not mention any casualties.

The delegation had travelled to Jenin, along with a group of journalists, to see the camp’s conditions and speak to its governor, Wafa said.

Gaza death toll rises

Israeli attacks on the besieged territory have killed at least 82 Palestinians and wounded 262 during the past 24-hour reporting period, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The casualties bring the total number of people confirmed killed in Gaza during the war to 53,655 with 121,950 wounded, the ministry said.

Since March 18, when Israel broke the nearly two-month ceasefire in Gaza, at least 3,509 people have been killed and 9,909 injured, it added.

Israeli forces ‘shoot towards’ European diplomatic delegation in Jenin

Local media is reporting that Israeli forces fired towards a diplomatic delegation visiting Jenin camp in the occupied West Bank.

The delegation included diplomats from the European Union, reports Quds News Network. They were fired at near a gate at the camp’s eastern entrance, according to the Palestinian Information Center.

We’ll bring you more information on the incident as soon as possible.

Israel attacks al-Awda Hospital

We are getting reports of more Israeli attacks in central and northern Gaza.

One aerial strike on a street in Gaza City killed at least four people, according to the Wafa news agency.

Other attacks hit Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, causing injuries, and the northern town of Beit Lahiya, report our colleagues on the ground.

Artillery fire also hit the third floor of northern Gaza’s al-Awda Hospital, while drones struck water tanks at the health facility.

Pope urges Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza

The newly selected head of the Catholic Church called the situation in the Palestinian enclave “yet more worrying and saddening”.

“I renew my appeal… to allow for the entry of fair humanitarian help and to bring to an end the hostilities, the high price of which is paid by children, the elderly and the sick,” the pope said during his weekly general audience in St Peter’s Square.

Italy urges Israel to halt Gaza attacks, open crossings for humanitarian aid

Italy has renewed its call for Israel to stop attacks on Gaza and allow humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestinian enclave.

“I once again called on Israel to halt military operations involving civilians and to immediately open all crossings to allow humanitarian aid to enter,” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani posted on X. “We want a ceasefire and the release of the hostages: the war in Gaza must end.”

Tajani also announced that 52 Palestinians, relatives of those who were evacuated from Gaza to Italy for medical treatment, were transferred to Jordan, adding they would eventually be brought to Italy.

Doctors forced to prioritise amid Israeli attacks, blockade

Speaking from Nasser Hospital, Palestinian physician Ahmed al-Farra says medical staff at the health facility are consistently forced to choose which patient’s life to prioritise amid the ongoing Israeli attacks and lack of resources.

“My doctor in the paediatric ICU asked me what to do in this situation. I told her, please try to prioritise those with the best chance of survival,” he noted. “If someone can survive, we try to help them. For others, we simply can’t do anything.”

Al-Farra also condemned the use of hunger as the “worst weapon” against Palestinians.

“When we are talking about malnutrition, we are talking about shutdown of the body’s mechanisms. Children will be unable to survive.”

Israeli protesters try to block aid from crossing into Gaza

A group of Israeli protesters gathered at the Karem Abu Salem (Israel’s Kerem Shalom) crossing, blocking aid from entering, reports Israel’s Arutz Sheva media.

One of the protesters, Reut Ben Haim, said it is an “unimaginable injustice” for aid to reach Gaza while Hamas continues to hold Israeli captives there. “We cannot stand idly by while this harm to our hostages continues,” she said, according to Arutz Sheva, before being arrested by police.

Another protester, Asriel Machlev, said it was “national suicide” for Israel to let any aid into Gaza and pledged to keep trying to block it.

“Every truck that enters the Strip prolongs the war,” Arutz Sheva quoted Machlev as saying. “It’s time to say: Until the hostages are home, no aid. We’ll be here every week, hundreds of reservists, to physically stop this insane move.”

Despite Israel’s pledge to let some aid into Gaza after a nearly three-month blockade, only a handful of trucks have reached the enclave. The UN and rights groups have accused Israel of weaponising hunger against Palestinians, pushing half a million people to the brink of starvation.

Israeli forces demolish dead Palestinian’s home for second time

Israeli forces have demolished the home of Abdul Qader al-Qawasmi, killed in November 2023, in Hebron for the second time, Wafa news agency is reporting.

According to security sources quoted by Wafa, a large contingent of Israeli soldiers stormed multiple neighbourhoods, set up positions near a central traffic circle and carried out the demolition.

During the operation, several families were detained and a military checkpoint was installed at Hebron’s northern entrance. The house was previously demolished in January 2024.

Twenty Palestinians detained in latest West Bank raids

Israeli forces have rounded up 20 people in raids throughout the occupied West Bank since last night, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.

Among those detained are three women and numerous former prisoners, it said.

Since October 7, Israeli forces have made about 17,000 arrests in the West Bank, according to the  group’s tally, holding many without formal charge.

Eight killed in Gaza City

An Israeli air attack has hit a parking area in Gaza City’s Jabalia neighbourhood, killing at least eight people, according to a Health Ministry update cited by our colleagues on the ground.

Dozens more people are wounded.

Medical teams in southern Gaza hospital struggle amid dwindling supplies

Ahmed al-Farra, director of paediatrics and obstetrics at al-Tahreer Maternity Hospital, part of the Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza, says medical teams are facing dire conditions after repeated Israeli strikes forced the evacuation of patients from the European Hospital, also in southern Gaza.

“Nasser Medical Complex is very, very crowded, as the European Hospital is completely destroyed, and no one can be treated there,” he told Al Jazeera. “But we have to continue. We are obligated to continue. This is our duty.”

Treating critical patients, especially children, as resources dwindle has become increasingly challenging, he said.

“No medical supplies arrived at the hospital … Gaza needs nearly 500 trucks every day to solve the problem. We are talking about a lot of diseases due to severe malnutrition, because of lack of food, lack of milk, lack of medical supplies,” al-Farra stressed, adding that the situation was unsustainable and deadly for children in Gaza.

If you’re just joining us

Let us get you up to speed with the latest developments:

  • UAE says agreements were reached with Israel on aid delivery to Gaza.
  • A Palestinian man has been detained in Qalqilya city by the Israeli army after they raided his home.

  • An Israeli drone hit a vehicle in southern Lebanon.

Doctors forced to reuse tools at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital

I’m at one of Gaza’s few functioning hospitals [Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital].

It is struggling to keep its doors open amid devastating medical shortages. Doctors here have started to reuse basic tools and are treating shrapnel wounds and burns with the most limited resources.

Medical teams are exhausted, as the hospital continues to receive many casualties daily. Many wounded people are lying in the hospital’s crowded hallways, without beds.

Israel’s approval of minimal aid serving as ‘smokescreen’

The few aid trucks let into Gaza are nowhere near sufficient to meet Gaza’s vast needs and instead serve as a “a smokescreen” for Israel to “pretend the siege is over”, according to medical charity Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF.

“The Israeli authorities’ decision to allow a ridiculously inadequate amount of aid into Gaza after months of an air-tight siege signals their intention to avoid the accusation of starving people in Gaza, while in fact keeping them barely surviving,” said Pascale Coissard, MSF’s emergency coordinator in Khan Younis.

As we’ve been reporting, Israel has approved the entry of 100 aid trucks to cross into the enclave, but the UN says no aid has actually been distributed there yet due to Israeli restrictions.

Two killed in Nuseirat, death toll reaches 42

An Israeli attack has killed at least two people in central Gaza’s Nuseirat camp, report our colleagues on the ground.

The casualties bring the total number of people killed in the enclave today to 42.

Aid trucks still held up at border

The Israeli army, after three months of devastating blockade, has allowed 100 humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza.

But what we mean here by allowed is that the trucks have received military clearance to access the Palestinian side. They have not made their journey into the enclave. They are still stuck at the border crossing. Only five trucks have made it in.

This could be another sign of the systematic obstruction of aid in Gaza. Many critics say Israel is delaying the entry of aid trucks until the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation – an Israel-backed organisation to distribute aid – will start operating in Gaza, expected at the end of this month. Others say the Israeli government is profoundly divided over aid distribution.

Israeli drone attack targets car in southern Lebanon

Lebanon’s National News Agency is reporting that an Israeli drone hit a car on al-Hawsh-Ain Baal road near Tyre, in southern Lebanon.

The attack comes as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is due in Beirut to discuss the issue of weapons in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, according to US-based news site Al-Monitor.

Australia’s foreign minister decries ‘horrifying’ reports of babies starving in Gaza

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has released a statement saying “the Israeli Government cannot allow the suffering to continue” after the UN’s aid chief said thousands of babies are at risk of dying if they do not receive food imminently.

“Australia joins international partners in calling on Israel to allow a full and immediate resumption of aid to Gaza,” Wong said in a post on X. “We condemn the abhorrent and outrageous comments made by members of the Netanyahu Government about these people in crisis.”

Wong stopped short of outlining any measures Australia might take to encourage Israel to ensure enough aid reaches those in need, as the UK, France and Canada said they would do, in a recent joint statement.

UAE says deal reached with Israel for Gaza aid delivery

State news agency WAM is reporting that an agreement was reached in a phone call between UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar.

According to WAM, the aid will initially cater to the food needs of about 15,000 civilians in Gaza. It will also include essential supplies for bakeries and critical items for infant care.

Earlier on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the UN humanitarian office in Geneva said Israel had given permission for about 100 aid trucks to enter Gaza.

However, the UN also says no aid has been distributed in Gaza because of Israeli restrictions, despite a handful of aid trucks entering the territory.

‘A sense now that evenhandedness has given way’

In the face of what MPs later described as Israel’s weaponisation of food, causing what they called a mass starvation event, the UK’s Foreign Secretary Lammy went on to outline steps his country would take immediately – the suspension of talks with Israel towards a free trade agreement, and further sanctions applied to Israeli settlers in the West Bank, including senior figure Daniella Weiss.

He said Israel’s ambassador was summoned to hear the government’s position, that the 11-week blockade of aid to Gaza has been cruel and indefensible.

The UK has been consistent in condemning Hamas for its October 7 attacks and in respecting Israel’s right to defend itself. But there is more than a sense now that evenhandedness has given way, and that a very different tone has established itself both in the House of Commons and at the top of government.

A majority of MPs welcomed the government’s action taken in concert with allies including the EU, but many said it would take much more. There were calls for the UK to recognise the State of Palestine, to widen an existing but limited arms embargo, and to sanction senior Israeli ministers.

Israeli forces arrest Palestinian amid raids in occupied West Bank

A Palestinian man has been detained in Qalqilya city by the Israeli army after they raided his home, the Wafa news agency is reporting.

Israeli forces also seized three vehicles in a raid on al-Khader, south of Bethlehem, and raided homes in Sarta, west of Salfit, as well as in the city of Nablus.

Two killed in Israeli bombing of central Gaza

Two Palestinians have been killed and many wounded by an Israeli attack on Maghazi camp, our colleagues on the ground are reporting.

At least 24 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since dawn.

Video shows supplies for Gaza held up due to Israeli blockade

UNRWA spokesperson Louise Wateridge says the agency has enough food in one of its warehouses in Jordan to feed “200,000 people alone for an entire month”.

“It’s been sitting here for weeks on end, ready to enter the Gaza Strip,” Wateridge said in a video taken at the warehouse, just a few hours’ drive from Gaza.

“Just this morning, I received footage from my colleagues in Gaza. They have absolutely nothing left. And yet, here, just a few hours away, there’s everything,” she said, adding that the supplies include food and medicine.

“We need this aid to enter now. It has to go to people who are desperate,” she added.

UK, France, Canada warn Israel of sanctions: What’s the effect?

We’ve been covering the UK, France and Canada’s threat to “take concrete actions” if Israel does not cease its onslaught on Gaza.

Andreas Krieg, senior lecturer at the School of Security Studies at King’s College London, said the threats from the UK, France and Canada against Israel set a precedent for other Western governments to emulate.

“While it will not have a direct impact on Israel’s behaviour on the ground, it widens the boundaries of discourse internationally and makes it easier for other governments to openly stand against Israeli atrocities,” he told Al Jazeera.

“Key to a change of behaviour in Israel, however, remains the United States,” he said. The US supplies the bulk of arms to Israel as well as providing diplomatic cover at the United Nations.

“Yet, there is a tangible erosion of consensus at play internationally as to the perception of Israel, which taints Israel increasingly as a rogue actor,” Krieg added.

Israeli soldiers arrest two brothers in Bethlehem

The Wafa news agency is reporting that Israeli soldiers arrested two brothers from the town of Al-Doha, in Bethlehem.

Israeli soldiers also opened fire in the Jericho Valley, injuring one Palestinian, the Palestinian Red Crescent said, according to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic.

Meanwhile, Wafa also reported that Israeli forces fired tear gas during raids on the village of Al-Mughayyir, in Ramallah and al-Ras, south of Tulkarem, with no arrests or injuries reported.

Let’s bring you up to speed:

  • Israeli forces continue bombarding Gaza, launching intense strikes on Khan Younis and killing 24 people across the Strip.
  • Some Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have welcomed the UK’s decision to sanction Israeli settlers, but others say the move is for “media consumption”.
  • King’s College at the University of Cambridge says it has decided to divest from companies involved in illegal activities, such as occupation, and those that produce weapons, after pro-Palestinian protests on campus last year.
  • Students at Columbia University highlighted the plight of their detained classmate, Mahmoud Khalil, at graduation ceremonies, and called for his release.
  • Ms Rachel, the YouTube personality and children’s educator, has appealed to world leaders to save the 14,000 babies at risk of death in Gaza.

‘We can’t bear what’s happening’

Palestinians in Gaza say they are desperate and the amount of aid Israel has promised to let in is not enough.

“Even the amount of aid they are speaking about and we hear of is not enough for anyone. It’s not enough for even one group of people. People would fight over it, even if it comes, people would fight over it,” an elderly woman in Gaza City said.

“We can’t bear what’s happening. We’re fed up. We want to go back to our cities, our homes and our lives. We want life to be back to normal as it was before.”

A Palestinian man in Gaza City said Israel is trying to deceive the world by saying aid trucks are entering Gaza.

“This is not useful for the people inside,” he said. “The displaced people in these areas all need food and have malnutrition. When we take children to the hospitals, doctors always say that this person has malnutrition and that vitamins, food and water are needed.”

Death toll in Gaza rises

Our teams on the ground say at least 24 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since the early hours of this morning.

We’ll bring you more when we have it.

Cambridge college to divest from arms companies after pro-Palestine protests

King’s College at the University of Cambridge says it has decided to divest from companies that produce military and nuclear weapons, as well as those involved in illegal activities, such as occupation.

The move comes after students at the college staged protests, including setting up a protest camp, urging the institution to cut ties with groups that are “complicit in Israel’s genocide” in Gaza.

In a statement, the college said its new policy is the culmination of many months of work and wide-ranging discussions about the relationship between its investments and its values, prompted by the occupation of Ukraine and Palestinian territory.

It also noted that, in the past, it committed to removing all exposure to fossil fuel investments by 2030.
