Here’s where things stand on Saturday 27 June 2025:
- US President Donald Trump said a ceasefire in Gaza could be reached “within the next week” as Israeli attacks continue, with more than 60 people killed across the territory on Friday.
- Gaza’s Government Media Office says revelations in the Israeli media that soldiers were ordered to “deliberately shoot” starving Palestinians seeking aid supplies are further evidence of “war crimes” in Gaza.
- The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says aid distribution sites operated by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) had created “a killing field”.
- Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 56,331 people and wounded 132,632, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7 attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.
Fuel crisis in Gaza threatens lifesaving services: UNRWA
The health sector in the Gaza Strip remains under intense strain, with widespread damage to medical facilities, the UN agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) has said.
The health crisis in the Gaza Strip was further compounded by ongoing restrictions on the entry of essential medical supplies and fuel, UNRWA said in its latest situation report.
“The fuel crisis in the Gaza Strip has reached deeply worrisome levels. Humanitarian organisations warn that without the immediate entry of fuel, lifesaving and life-sustaining services are at risk of shutting down imminently,” the UN agency said.
Israeli forces targeting Gaza’s so-called ‘safe zones’
Israel has been pressing ahead with its military offensive across Gaza, with a particular focus on targeting civilians in areas that the Israeli military itself has designated as safe humanitarian zones, specifically in the al-Mawasi area in southern Gaza.
Since dawn today, two makeshift tents have been targeted, resulting in at least four confirmed Palestinian deaths and six others injured.
What is especially alarming is that rescue operations are still ongoing following an Israeli strike yesterday evening that hit a group of makeshift shelters in Gaza City.
This strike buried at least 15 tents, and several rescue workers are still trying to recover more bodies trapped under the sand.
This marks yet another bleak milestone in Israel’s ongoing war with residents feeling a shattered sense of safety and left wondering if anywhere in Gaza is truly safe.
Despite Israel’s claims that its military campaign will continue until Hamas is fully defeated, misery on the ground is mounting, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

Trump is talking up a Gaza ceasefire, but major obstacles remain
Donald Trump has said a ceasefire in Gaza could be achieved in a week. That’s welcome news to Palestinians in Gaza who continue to be bombed and starved nonstop. But there are actually no negotiations happening anywhere at the moment around this.
What we do know is that talk of a ceasefire in Gaza has increased exponentially after the ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
Israel does not want to talk about ending the war – in fact, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu would be risking a lot if he did. But there is an understanding, according to many reports, that Netanyahu would have to agree to some sort of ceasefire in exchange for the normalisation deals with other countries being talked about by the Trump administration.
What Hamas would want, according to its statements, is first of all for the slaughter to end, but also for Israeli troops to withdraw from the areas they’ve taken in Gaza after Israel broke the ceasefire in March. Right now, they’ve taken up to 80 percent of Gaza.
Hamas also wants US guarantees that negotiations would continue, and that Israel wouldn’t break the ceasefire again if more time were needed for negotiations.
Tehran stages largest state funeral in decades
We haven’t seen so many coffins on public display since the years of the Iran-Iraq war.
Today’s state funeral in Tehran will honour 60 people killed in the 12-day war – military commanders, nuclear scientists, women and children, their portraits displayed on their coffins.
The coffins are being carried on trucks. People are going and touching the coffins because they see the dead as martyrs, and touching them is a sign of blessing.
The procession to honour the dead will continue for miles through central Tehran to Azadi Square. Some of the dead will then be buried in Tehran, while others will be laid to rest in their hometowns.
For the Iranian government, those numbers are an important sign of the legitimacy of the establishment.

Israeli forces arrest dozens of Palestinians in occupied West Bank: Report
Israeli forces have conducted a series of raids, arresting more than 25 people in the governorates of Nablus, Qalqilya, and Salfit, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office (ASRA).
Among those arrested was journalist Mujahid Bani Mufleh from Beita, in Nablus governorate, the statement published by ASRA said. Israeli forces stormed dozens of homes during the raids, it added.
Nine Israelis arrested as settlers rampage through West Bank village
Several dozen Israeli settlers have reportedly attacked Israeli military reservists while rampaging through the occupied West Bank village of Kafr Malek – the scene of a deadly settler assault earlier this week.
Israeli’s Kan public broadcaster said the settlers beat, choked and hurled rocks at the soldiers after they responded to a riot in the village on Friday night. The assailants also slashed the tyres of a police cruiser and tried to run over an officer, according to the same outlet.
Several Israeli soldiers were lightly injured, with nine suspects arrested in connection with the incident.
Israeli settlers rampaged through Kafr Malek under the protection of Israeli soldiers on Wednesday, provoking clashes with local residents that resulted in three Palestinians being killed.
Trump says ceasefire in Gaza ‘close’
US President Donald Trump says he believes a ceasefire could be reached in Gaza within a week.
It comes just days after Trump signalled that great progress had been made in negotiations.
Iran’s demand for Trump to show respect to Khamenei understandable
The recent social media post from Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, saying that if Trump is genuine about wanting a deal, he should put aside the “disrespectful and unacceptable tone” towards Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was a most expected reaction.
Anyone who knows Iran will know how the supreme leader has a central role in this whole structure.
There’s a common misunderstanding of Khamenei’s position. Many people regard him as chiefly a religious leader, but according to the constitution, he’s not only that – he’s the political leader, he’s the military leader. He’s simply the head of state in Iran.
According to Iran’s constitution, his position is not just the top of a hierarchy. He has a divine role, as well. In Shia political theology, he’s the representative of the 12th imam.
Not only in Iran, but across the world, we know there are a significant number of Shia who look for his guidance. Anyone who knows that would be meticulously careful not to publicly criticise him, and particularly not to accuse him of lying.
Photos: Thousands turn out for mass state funeral in Iranian capital

At least 14 people killed in Gaza since dawn: Medical sources
Earlier, we reported that six people were killed in southern Gaza after Israeli forces hit tents sheltering displaced people in the al-Mawasi area.
We are now receiving reports that at least 14 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across the besieged enclave since dawn, according to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic, quoting hospital sources.
Our colleagues on the ground report that at least eight people were killed in northern Gaza’s as-Saftawi area, north of Gaza City, in an Israeli air attack on the Osama bin Zaid School – where many displaced people had sought shelter.
Among those killed were two children and a woman.
Six people killed as Israeli attack hits tents in southern Gaza
At least six people have been killed in an Israeli attack on tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in the al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis, according to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic, quoting sources at Nasser Hospital.
Among the targets of the Israeli assault was a tent sheltering members of the Abu Taima family, the sources said.
Funeral procession starts in Tehran for Iranian commanders, officials killed by Israel
Iran is now hosting a mass state funeral for about 60 people, including military commanders and nuclear scientists, killed in the 12-day war with Israel.
“The ceremony to honour the martyrs has officially started,” Iranian state TV reported a short while ago, accompanied by footage of people donning black clothes and waving Iranian flags.
A ceremony is due to take place in Tehran’s Enghelab Square, followed by a funeral procession to Azadi Square.
Iranian state media has also released the photos showing the coffins of senior military commanders and officials killed in Israel’s air attacks, according to outlet Iran International.
Among the slain commanders featured on the coffins are Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps chief commander Hossein Salami, and Aerospace Force commander Amir-Ali Hajizadeh.
Israeli military carries out deadly overnight attacks across Gaza
The Israeli military has continued its assault on Gaza overnight, carrying out several attacks that have killed and injured dozens of people.
Our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues report the following attacks over recent hours:
- An Israeli air raid on a tent housing displaced Palestinians in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killed at least four Palestinians, Nasser Hospital reported in the early hours of this morning.
- Another Israeli air raid on a school housing displaced people northwest of Gaza City has killed two Palestinians and injured more.
- Israeli forces have opened fire on Palestinian aid seekers near the Netzarim aid distribution centre in central Gaza, wounding at least 10 people, according to sources at al-Awda Hospital.
- The Israeli military has shelled two homes in Jabalia al-Balad in northern Gaza, injuring eight Palestinians, according to Al-Aqsa TV.
Missile from Yemen ‘likely’ intercepted, says Israeli military
Israel’s military said a missile launched from Yemen that activated air alerts in the country a little earlier “was likely successfully intercepted”.
The military, which usually provides definitive information regarding missile and drone attacks, said “an interception attempt was made” and it was likely the projectile was downed by missile defences.
The missile attack by the Houthis appears to be at least the third launch of a projectile by the Yemen-based fighters towards Israel since it agreed on a ceasefire with Iran last week.

Soldiers admit Israeli army is targeting unarmed Palestinian aid seekers
As we previously reported, Israeli newspaper Haaretz published shocking quotes on Friday from Israeli soldiers who say they have been instructed to fire on unarmed, starving Palestinians for no reason at aid distribution sites.
A recap of recent developments
Let’s get you up to speed with some of the latest developments over the past day with Israel’s war on Gaza and the Israel-Iran conflict:
- Gaza’s civil defence said at least 100 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces on Friday, including six people near one of the aid distribution sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in the south of the besieged enclave.
- Israeli officers and soldiers have told Israel’s Haaretz newspaper they were instructed to shoot at unarmed Palestinians seeking aid at designated GHF distribution zones in Gaza, even if the crowds posed no threat.
- Gaza’s Government Media Office has expressed its “deep concern and condemnation” over the discovery of “Oxycodone” narcotic pills inside flour bags distributed by GHF.
- US President Donald Trump has claimed he personally stopped a final Israeli air strike targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as he accused Tehran of lying about the outcome of the war.
- Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a sharp warning to Trump, calling on him to “put aside the disrespectful and unacceptable tone” towards Khamenei.
- Iran has also rejected a “meaningless” request by International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi to visit facilities bombed by Israel and the US.
