Here’s where things stand on Tuesday 22 July 2025:
- Gaza City’s municipality warns of “extreme thirst” after its main desalination plant in the north shut down completely during Israel’s total fuel blockade.
- The World Food Programme says Palestinians throughout Gaza are not eating for days and facing soaring malnutrition – “getting to levels we’ve never seen ever before”.
- At least 60 people are killed as Israeli forces continue to pound Gaza a day after killing at least 115 Palestinians, including 79 aid seekers at the Zikim crossing and 13 others at GHF-run sites.
- Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 59,029 people and wounded 142,135. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023 attacks and more than 200 taken captive.
Palestinian injured in settler attack near Hebron
A Palestinian man sustained wounds after Israelis from illegal settlements attacked homes in the village of al-Rakeez, part of the Masafer Yatta area, in the occupied West Bank.
Activist Osama Makhamra told the Wafa news agency that settlers from a nearby illegal outpost – built on privately owned Palestinian land east of Yatta – stormed the village under the protection of Israeli forces and assaulted residents.
One man from the al-Amour family suffered bruises and injuries as a result.
Israeli forces detained several residents and fired live rounds, stun grenades and tear gas during the raid.

Here are the latest developments:
- The Israeli military has killed at least 61 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip since dawn as more than two million Palestinians in the enclave starve and there is an acute water shortage.
- Israel’s government rejected a statement by 25 countries – including the UK, France, Italy and Japan – that called for an immediate end to the war, calling them “disconnected from reality”.
- At least one person was killed in southern Lebanon in what appeared to be another Israeli assassination.
- Yemen’s Houthis said they launched five drones at Israeli targets and “successfully” achieved their goal.
- The families of captives held in Gaza expressed concern that the Israeli military’s unprecedented ground assault on Deir el-Balah in central Gaza could endanger their relatives.

Gaza-bound aid ship nearing international waters
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition says the Handala, a Gaza-bound aid ship, left Italy and is nearing international waters as part of a mission to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
In a post on X, the group said the boat is carrying baby formula, food and medicine “for the children of Gaza”, but emphasised the voyage’s ultimate goal is to end the need for aid by challenging what it called Israel’s “illegal siege”.
The coalition urged the public to monitor the flotilla’s progress and press their governments to uphold international law by ensuring its safe passage.
The ship is crewed by about 20 international participants, including European lawmakers, human rights activists and journalists.
The voyage follows a similar mission by the vessel Madleen six weeks ago, which included activists such as Greta Thunberg and French-Palestinian parliamentarian Rima Hassan.
Senator Bernie Sanders calls for end to US military aid to Israel
US Senator Bernie Sanders demanded an immediate halt to US military support to Israel as he decried another deadly weekend in Gaza in which 130 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,000 wounded.
“People are starving. Many were shot by the Israeli military while simply trying to get food,” Sanders wrote on X. “This is completely insane and unacceptable. No more US military aid to Israel.”
His remarks come amid growing calls in Washington and internationally for a Gaza ceasefire and accountability for Israel’s leaders.
Since the Israeli-US-backed GHF was established in May, more than 900 Palestinians have been killed while attempting to receive life-saving food packages.
Patients in Gaza face death as medical teams work without food
The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) issued an urgent humanitarian appeal, warning that patients in Gaza are at risk of dying because of severe shortages of food and medical care.
In a post on X, the group said its medical teams are working under inhumane conditions – without food, support, or access to critical supplies – as the ongoing blockade prevents humanitarian aid from entering the besieged enclave.
“This is an urgent humanitarian message to the international community,” PRCS said in a statement. “Stop the war immediately. Open the crossings now.”

‘Caretakers in Gaza are in need of care’: UN
The head of the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says doctors, nurses, and others who take care of people in Gaza are hungry themselves.
Philippe Lazzarini again slammed the Israel-US-backed GHF as a “sadistic death trap” and reiterated the UN and international organisations are fully capable of getting humanitarian aid to Gaza if they’re allowed.
“End this abomination,” he said.
More Palestinians killed in new round of Israeli strikes
Three Palestinians have been killed and several others wounded as Israel carried out a series of air strikes across Gaza.
Two people were killed and others injured when Israeli warplanes struck a tent sheltering displaced people in the al-Qadisiya area, west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, local sources told the Wafa news agency.
In central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah, a woman identified as Ibtisam Khaled Dawas was shot and killed by an Israeli sniper inside her home in the Bishara neighbourhood.
Sources also reported casualties from the Shaat family after their home was hit in Khan Younis. Ambulance crews have struggled to reach the site because of ongoing bombardment, Wafa said.
Israeli forces torching homes in Nur Shams is a ‘systematic crime’
Abdullah Kamil, governor of Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank, has condemned the Israeli army’s “deliberate, systematic” burning of Palestinian homes in the Nur Shams refugee camp.
The arson attacks are meant to terrorise residents and force their displacement, he said.
In a statement carried by the Wafa news agency, Kamil said Israeli troops set fire to two more homes overnight, citing camp residents who reported soldiers in the area moments before the blazes began.
Kamil called the attacks a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and urged the UN, human-rights groups and the wider international community to intervene immediately and hold Israeli forces accountable.
Continued silence, he said, would amount to complicity in acts that “rise to the level of war crimes”.
The footage below, verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency, shows smoke rising over Nur Shams after another home was torched by Israeli forces.
Hamas welcomes international call to end Israel’s war on Gaza
Hamas says the statement by 25 countries calling for an immediate end to Israel’s war represents “international recognition of the extent of the violations committed by the fascist occupation government”.
“The international statement’s condemnation of the killing of more than 800 civilians near US-Israeli aid points confirms the brutality of this mechanism,” Hamas said.
Since the GHF was established at the end of May, more than 900 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire while attempting to receive desperately needed food.

Israeli military says it arrested ‘terrorist cell’ in Bethlehem
The Israeli army has released a joint statement with security agency Shin Bet saying it arrested 16 Palestinians during raids across the occupied West Bank.
The “terrorist cell” was arrested in Bethlehem while planning to carry out an attack with two weapons, and some money was seized.
Several brigades of the Israeli army participated in the raids, it added.

Israel denounces 25 countries for calling for end to war on Gaza
Israel has rejected a statement by 25 countries calling for an end to the war on Gaza as a move “disconnected from reality and sends the wrong message to Hamas”.
In a statement on X, the Foreign Ministry said all statements about the war should only be directed at Hamas, which “started this war and is prolonging it”.
“There is a concrete proposal for a ceasefire deal, and Israel has repeatedly said yes to this proposal, while Hamas stubbornly refuses to accept it. The statement fails to focus the pressure on Hamas and fails to recognise Hamas’s role and responsibility for the situation,” it said.
“At these sensitive moments in the ongoing negotiations, it is better to avoid statements of this kind.”
Foreign ministers of the 25 countries condemned the “drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians” in Gaza.
‘Intolerable’: British PM condemns Israel’s killing of Gaza aid seekers
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated the situation in Gaza is “intolerable on so many levels” during a House of Commons speech.
“[And] we make that absolutely clear in all our exchanges with Israel and with other countries,” Starmer told parliamentarians.
“Whether that’s the deaths of those that are queueing for aid, whether it’s the plans to force Palestinians to live in certain areas or be excluded from certain areas, they are all intolerable and absolutely wrong in principle.”
The prime minister reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to recognising a Palestinian state “at a time most conducive to the prospects of peace” in the region.
Settler and military violence driving mental health crisis in West Bank
Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, has warned relentless violence by Israelis from illegal settlements and the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank is leaving deep psychological scars on Palestinians.
In a statement, the medical aid agency said more than 85 percent of homes in some villages have been demolished, while residents face near-daily assaults, blocked roads and destruction of clinics and mosques.
MSF said children are suffering from nightmares and panic attacks, while adults face serious trauma. In June alone, 94 percent of new mental health cases seen by the group were directly linked to violent incidents.
It accused Israeli forces of enabling and sometimes participating in the violence, and called on the international community to stop what it described as “a policy of forced displacement”.
Israel’s Ben-Gvir attacks army chief over potential ceasefire
Israel’s far-right security minister has condemned a “grave and dangerous mistake” by army chief Eyal Zamir after he made positive ceasefire comments while visiting invading soldiers in Gaza.
Itamar Ben-Gvir said Zamir’s comments that it would be a “great achievement for you” if a truce and captive exchange deal is reached in the coming days are “extremely reckless”.
“Our soldiers have been fighting for a very long time to achieve the primary goal of this operation: to eliminate Hamas in Gaza,” Ben-Gvir said during a speech, adding a deal would be bad because it would get humanitarian aid into Gaza and release some Palestinian prisoners.
“I do not believe in a deal that weakens our power and gives Hamas oxygen, but I believe in the complete occupation of the Gaza Strip, enhancing military operations, and encouraging voluntary migration.”

UN warns of collapse in Gaza as displacement surges and water crisis deepens
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says mass displacement continues across Gaza with just 10 percent of the territory now accessible to civilians.
“People are being forced to flee again with nowhere safe to go,” UNRWA said, noting many have already been displaced multiple times. It reiterated calls for an urgent ceasefire.
In a separate social media post, the agency warned the summer heat is worsening Gaza’s water crisis. Wells are becoming inaccessible because of ongoing bombardment and forced evacuation orders, while critical services, including water delivery, are at risk of shutting down amid severe fuel shortages.
Only two trucks of fuel are entering Gaza each day, far below what’s needed. UNRWA says without fuel it cannot deliver water to those in need, and urged an end to Israel’s devastating blockade.
One person killed in Israeli strike on southern Lebanon
An Israeli drone strike on southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh has killed at least one person, Lebanon’s National News Agency reports.
The strike targeted a motorcycle, killing its rider on the spot in the town of at-Tiri near the city of Bint Jbeil, it said.
Israel continues attacks on Lebanon despite signing a ceasefire with Hezbollah in November to halt hostilities.
Surge in settler violence and demolitions in occupied West Bank
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says seven Palestinians, including a child, were killed and 115 injured in the occupied West Bank between July 8-14.
At least 30 attacks by Israeli settlers from illegal settlements were recorded during that period.
In one of the most violent incidents, two Palestinians were killed and 58 others wounded in a large settler incursion near the villages of Sinjil and al-Mazraa ash-Sharqiya.
OCHA also reported 29 Palestinian buildings were demolished that week, displacing 34 people. Since the start of the year, 796 structures have been demolished across the West Bank, displacing 779 Palestinians.
The agency warned of an escalating humanitarian crisis as attacks on people, homes and farmland intensify.
‘Atrocious and inhumane’: UN chief decries mass killings in starving Gaza
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the latest mass killing of aid seekers in the Gaza Strip by Israeli troops.
“Over the weekend in Gaza, we saw yet more mass shootings and killings of people seeking UN aid for their families, an atrocious and inhumane act, which I utterly condemn,” Guterres said at a forum on sustainable development.
Highlighting the deteriorating situation in Gaza, Guterres stressed “we need an immediate ceasefire in Gaza [and] the immediate release of all hostages”.
“Unimpeded humanitarian access” must be allowed by Israel to UN-led aid agencies, Guterres said.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 86 people – including 76 children – have died from hunger and dehydration since October 2023.
Israeli evacuation helicopters land in Khan Younis
Israeli evacuation helicopters have landed northeast of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, sources on the ground say.
This comes a day after the army said two soldiers were wounded by an explosive device in southern Gaza.
More than 450 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the ground invasion of Gaza was launched in October 2023, with thousands injured, The Times of Israel reports.
