Thirty-one people were killed when a bus overturned and fell off a bridge in Mali on Tuesday.
The bus was heading from the Malian town of Kenyeva to neighbouring Burkina Faso when it fell off a bridge over the Bagoe River.
At least 10 other people were injured, some seriously.
Local authorities said the likely cause was “the driver’s failure to control the vehicle.
“The accident occurred around 5:00 pm local time (17:00 Japan time).”
“A bus departing from the community of Kenieba bound for Burkina Faso fell off a bridge. The probable cause was that the driver lost control of the vehicle,” the Ministry of Transport said in a statement.
Victims included Malians and nationals of other West African countries.
Traffic accidents are common in Mali due to the poor condition of many roads and vehicles, as well as overloaded and poorly regulated public transport.
Earlier this month, a bus bound for the capital Bamako collided with a truck, killing 15 people and injuring 46 others, AFP reported.
