Nigerian authorities have arrested 50 suspected internet fraudsters, almost all of them students at the Kwara State University in the west.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said in a statement on Thursday that 48 students and two others were arrested from various hideouts after several days of surveillance.
“Nine exotic cars, 24 laptops and mobile phones of various brands” were recovered from the suspects, who are said to have been living a luxurious life.
Local media also quoted the agency as saying it had “stepped up efforts to stamp out corruption and other nefarious activities of ‘Yahoo Yahoo boys'”, referring to the name given to online fraudsters.
Authorities released images of the suspect and seized items on social media.
According to the EFCC, the suspects will be arraigned in court soon after the investigation is completed.
