Nigerian authorities have increased security at state-run grocery stores across the country amid the crisis.
As it has become difficult for people to buy food, there has been an increase in incidents of raids on warehouses to steal food.
The National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) said on Sunday: The attack occurred after residents looted food, including sacks of maize, at a compound in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital.
The looters also destroyed a warehouse.
The incident reportedly lasted several hours, with people blocking roads near the area and causing traffic jams.
Several videos have been shared online showing chaotic scenes Sunday, including crowds gathering around the facility and people leaving with bags of grain.
Police told local media the situation was under control.
The incident occurred amid the country’s economic crisis, with prices for goods and services rising significantly and inflation rising to nearly 30%.
