South Africa: Three to be charged in German tourist’s murder

Three foreign nationals are scheduled to appear in court in South Africa on multiple charges, including the murder of a 74-year-old German tourist on Saturday.

South African police claimed the suspects brutally attacked the tourist, then killed him and abandoned his body in the town of Northam in Limpopo province.

The tourist was travelling from Botswana when he gave the hitchhiker a lift.

Police said the hitchhiker then called two other people who were driving the tourist to his accommodation, tied him up and attacked him, robbing him of cash and other valuables.

They then abandoned his body in the bushes near the farm, the South African Police Service (Saps) added in a statement.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said in a statement: “We remain committed to ensuring strong cases that result in long-term convictions for these perpetrators.”

The nationality of the foreigner has not yet been revealed.
