A Spanish winery has suffered losses of more than €2.5m (£2.1m) after unknown intruders spilled 60,000 liters of wine.
The spilt wines were from the winery’s two most expensive varieties, Orcajo and Malabrigo.
He said the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. local time on Sunday (2:30 p.m. Japan time) and that the intruders were likely familiar with the winery’s premises.
Police are investigating the incident.
Surveillance cameras showed a hooded person moving between tanks and quickly opening them, allowing the contents to drip onto the floor.
The tank, which has a safety mechanism, was tough to open without prior knowledge. Therefore, it can be assumed that the intruder is “accustomed to opening these tanks and is familiar with such machines.
The person moved smoothly throughout the winery grounds even though it was dark and there was no light. It is assumed that the person might have known the area well.
It was too early to speculate about their identities and there was no reason to suspect current or former employees.
The intruder opened five tanks, but he found only three contained wine.
Cepa 21 is located in Castrillo de Duero, a small village in northwest Spain.
Orcajo wine costs around £80 a bottle in the UK, while Malabrigo costs £35.
