More than 30 people have been killed in a bus crash on a mountain road in Bolivia, police say.

The vehicle plunged almost 800m (2625 ft) into a ravine in the southwestern district of Yocalla, an officer said.

Fourteen people were also injured, including four children, an official from a local hospital said in a video.

Bolivia has notoriously dangerous roads, particularly in mountainous areas.

The accident happened between the cities of Potosí and Oruro, police said.

Officials believe that the crash could have been caused by speeding, with the driver “unable” to control the bus, police colonel Victor Benavides told the AFP news agency.

This is believed to be the most serious road accident reported in the South American country so far this year.

Local news outlet Unitel reported that several of those injured were in a serious condition.

Deadly road accidents are common in Bolivia.

Last month, 19 people were killed when another bus came off a road, also near Potosí.

Road accidents kill an average of 1,400 people every year in the country of about 12 million inhabitants, according to government data.

An Afghan man arrested on suspicion of driving into a crowd of people in Munich, injuring 36, has admitted carrying out the attack and appears to have had a religious…

An Afghan man arrested on suspicion of driving into a crowd of people in Munich, injuring 36, has admitted carrying out the attack and appears to have had a religious motivation, say prosecutors.

Munich public prosecutor Gabriele Tilmann told reporters that the suspect had said “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) in Arabic when he was detained and she described the attack as “Islamist motivated”.

A two-year-old girl is among two people who were critically injured in the attack near Munich central station on Thursday. She is in intensive care.

Another eight people were seriously hurt. Updating details of the casualties, police said 32 were male and four were female.

Thursday’s car-ramming in the heart of Munich came 10 days before Germans go the polls in federal elections overshadowed by a series of earlier attacks carried out by immigrants. Two of the alleged attackers had come from Afghanistan.

As snow fell in Munich on Friday, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the scene of attack and said “the brutality of this act upsets us and leaves us stunned”.

Police chief Guido Limmer said the Munich suspect, identified as Farhad N who is 24, had been questioned for two hours after the attack.

During questioning, he told police that he had driven his Mini Cooper car intentionally into the crowd, who were taking part in a trade union protest at the time.

Farhad N was due to appear in court on Friday afternoon. He had no previous criminal record and police said there was no evidence of a link to a jihadist group. He also appears to have acted alone, police say.

He arrived in Germany in 2016 and although his application for asylum was turned down he was allowed to stay in Germany and had a valid residence and work permit.

The Munich prosecutor confirmed to reporters that Farhad N had been living in Germany legally.

The attack happened on the eve of the Munich Security Conference. After arriving in the city on Friday US Vice-President JD Vance expressed his condolences to the 36 people injured in the attack.

Authorities initially suggested that the suspect had been convicted of shoplifting, but Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann later clarified that he had been working as a store detective and had appeared as a witness in shoplifting trials rather than as an alleged offender.

A truck cabin that was swallowed by a sinkhole in Japan two weeks ago has been located in a nearby sewer pipe, authorities say.

Drone images suggest that a human body is inside the cabin, but it is unclear if it is that of the truck’s missing 74-year-old driver.

The sinkhole, which now measures 40m (131ft) in diameter, opened at a road intersection in Yashio city near Tokyo. It is believed to be caused by a sewer rupture.

Search teams are unable to enter the 5m-wide pipe due to continuous water flow and high levels of hydrogen sulfide or sewer gas, officials said.

They will need to install a temporary bypass pipe to stop the water flow and access the truck. That process could take three months,Saitama Governor Motohiro Ono said.

While rescuers were able to pull the truck’s loading platform from the sinkhole, they were unable to reach the cabin which had the driver.

The driver was able to communicate with rescuers shortly after he fell into the sinkhole on 28 January, but contact was lost as the truck was buried deeper in soil and debris.

On Sunday, authorities moved their search from the sinkhole to the nearby sewer pipe, where part of a driver’s seat was found.

The sinkhole initially measured 10m wide and 5m deep, but it has since quadrupled in size after it merged with another sinkhole nearby.

As the crater continues to erode, authorities have asked nearby residents to evacuate their homes, fearing further cave-ins.

Officials have also asked 1.2 million residents in Saitama prefecture to reduce their water usage, including cutting back on showers and laundry, to limit the water flowing in the underground pipes.

The water flow and further road collapses have hampered the search operation, which was suspended more than once out of safety concerns.

Sinkholes are increasingly common in Japanese cities, as many have ageing sewage pipeline infrastructure.

Officials say that it could take two or three years to repair the sewer rupture.

A 60-year-old man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of two teenagers in County Monaghan.

Kiea McCann, 17, and her best friend, 16-year-old Dlava Mohammed, died when the car they were travelling in struck a tree at Legnakelly ,near Clones, on 31 July 2023.

The girls were on their way to a school ball at the Westenra Arms Hotel in Monaghan town.

Anthony McGinn, with an address at Drumloo, Newbliss, County Monaghan, was charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of the teenagers.

He was also charged with dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm to Dlava’s sister, Avin Mohammed, on the same date.

At a sitting of Monaghan Circuit Court on Tuesday, McGinn pleaded guilty to both charges.

Solicitors representing McGinn said they were still looking for specialist medical certificates to be completed and asked the court to consider his so far unblemished criminal record.

In the absence of a criminal record, a probation report was also ordered.

Judge John Aylmer released Mr McGinn on continuing bail.

He is due to be sentenced at a later date.

A North Yorkshire police officer has died after she was struck by a lorry while helping at the scene of an earlier road accident.

PC Rosie Prior was standing on the verge of the A19 at Bagby, near Thirsk, with the driver and passenger of one of the cars involved when the lorry collided with them at 08:55 GMT on Saturday morning.

The car driver – Ryan Welford, 41, from Knaresborough – died at the scene.

The 65-year-old lorry driver from Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released under investigation.

A teenage boy who was a passenger in Mr Welford’s car is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

“It is with profound sadness to confirm the death of PC Rosie Prior on Saturday morning,” North Yorkshire Chief Constable Tim Forber said.

“This is clearly a deeply traumatic and heart-breaking event for everyone involved.”PC Prior’s family described her as “a loving mum, wife, daughter, sister, aunty and will be deeply missed”.

Mr Welford’s family said he was a “hard-working and loving father, husband, son and brother. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.”

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses and motorists with dashcam footage to get in touch by emailing.

A driver who collided head-on with a police motorcycle during a pursuit has been jailed for four years.

Marvin Geddes, 33, crashed at speed into the officer in Southampton in July 2024, police said.

He pleaded guilty at Southampton Crown Court to causing actual bodily harm to PC Derek Hearn, who escaped more serious injury.

Geddes, of Epping Close, was also sentenced for dangerous driving, a breach of a previous dangerous driving sentence and driving without a licence or insurance.

Police said the defendant’s stolen Honda Civic was first spotted by officers in Wimpson Lane at about 21:20 BST on 2 July.

Geddes drove the wrong way around a roundabout and through a red light while being followed, police added.

He hit the motorcyclist on Lords Hill Centre East before driving off and colliding with a car, officers said.

PC Hearn said: “I feel lucky that I haven’t lost a limb or even my life from this incident.”

Supt Mark Lewis said: “This is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers sometimes face while simply doing their jobs.

“I was absolutely appalled when I saw the footage of this incident. No police officer should ever have to deal with such extreme violence towards them.

“The fact PC Hearn and the driver of the Peugeot were not seriously injured is extremely lucky, considering the severe level of complete disregard Geddes showed to them.”

Geddes was also disqualified from driving for 32 months.

A man has been arrested after a cyclist was fatally struck on a country road in a suspected hit-and-run crash, police said.

The cyclist, aged in his 50s, died in hospital after being hit on Dicks Lane in Ormskirk at about 18:46 GMT on Thursday, said Lancashire Constabulary.

Police said a 29-year-old man from Burscough had been detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving as well as driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

Even though an arrest had been made, Sgt Chris Evans said the investigation was still “very much ongoing” and urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Police said the cyclist had been travelling towards Wigan Road when he was struck by a car.

A force spokesperson said detectives were “particularly keen” to hear from anyone who saw a Kia Sportage being driven in the area between 18:30 and 19:00 GMT.

Sgt Evans said: “This collision has resulted in a man losing his life and my thoughts are with his loved ones at this devastating time.”
