India’s stock market regulator has dismissed some allegations of stock manipulation and financial fraud against billionaire Gautam Adani and his group of companies, made by US short-seller Hindenburg Research.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) began investigating the conglomerate in 2023, after Hindenburg Research published explosive reports, causing the group a loss of more than $100bn in market value in days.

On Thursday, Sebi dismissed the allegations against Adani’s companies, saying the inquiry did not reveal any violation of regulatory norms.

“Sebi has reaffirmed what we have always maintained, that the Hindenburg claims were baseless,” Mr Adani posted on X.

On 24 January 2023, Hindenburg Research, which specialises in “short-selling” – betting against a company’s share price in the expectation that it will fall – publised a 106-page report accusing the Adani Group of accounting irregularities, stock manipulation and of using offshore shell companies to inflate share prices.

Sebi dismissed some of these allegationson Thursday saying that according to its rules, there were no transactions between Adani’s companies and related-parties and hence, did not need to be disclosed to investors nor did they consitute market manipulation.

It also said that there were no allegations of money being siphoned off or funds being diverted or investors losing money. It added that loans taken by Adani companies from any entity had been paid back even before the start of the investigation.

“On merit too, it is held that impugned transactions cannot be classified as manipulative or fraudulent transactions or unfair trade practices,” the order notes.

Sebi has cleared two charges against Adani firms, but 22 cases on issues from insider trading to public float violations remain pending, according to Reuters news agency.

Hindeburg’s allegations had sparked furious political rows in the country, with India’s main opposition Congress party accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of not taking action against the Adani group.

Mr Adani, who is one of Asia’s richest men, is perceived as being close to Mr Modi and has long faced allegations from opposition politicians that he has benefited from his political ties, which he denies.

Last year, the short-seller also accused former Sebi chief Madhabi Puri Buch of having links with offshore funds used by the Adani group.

In May, India’s anti-corruption watchdog cleared her of all corruption charges levelled against her on the basis of Hindenburg’s allegations.

Earlier this year, Nate Anderson, the founder of Hindenburg Research, announced that he was disbanding the company almost eight years after starting it.

Mr Anderson didn’t share a specific reason for his decision, but expressed a desire to spend more time with friends and family in the future.

Donald Trump has said there is a “good chance” he could meet the Russian and Ukrainian leaders, following what he described as “very good talks” between his envoy and Vladimir Putin earlier in the day.

Asked at the White House whether the two leaders had agreed to such a summit, the US president said there was a “very good prospect”, but did not give further details.

The Kremlin earlier issued a vague statement about the talks between Putin and Steve Witkoff, with a foreign policy aide saying the two sides had exchanged “signals” as part of “constructive” talks in Moscow.

The meeting came days before Trump’s deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, or face new sanctions.

Trump’s comments in the Oval Office on Wednesday come after he posted on his Truth Social platform that he had briefed some of America’s European allies following the talks.

“Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come,” Trump said.

The White House said that Russia had expressed a desire to meet the US president and that he was “open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelensky”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meanwhile said he had spoken to Trump about Witkoff’s visit, with European leaders also on the call.

Zelensky has been warning that Russia would only make serious moves towards peace if it began to run out of money.

Trump has said Russia could face hefty sanctions or see secondary sanctions imposed against all those who trade with it if it doesn’t take steps to end the war.

Wednesday’s discussions between Putin and Witkoff appeared cordial despite Trump’s mounting irritation with the lack of progress in negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.

Shortly after Witkoff’s departure from Moscow, the White House said Trump had signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on India for buying Russian oil. The tariff would come into force on 27 August.

The US president has accused India of not caring “how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine”.

Expectations are muted for a settlement by Friday, and Russia has continued its large-scale air attacks on Ukraine despite Trump’s threats of sanctions.

Before taking office in January, Trump said he would be able to end the war between Russia and Ukraine in a day. The conflict has raged on, and his rhetoric towards Moscow has since hardened.

“We thought we had [the war] settled numerous times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever,” he said last month.

Three rounds of talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul have failed to bring the war closer to an end, three-and-a-half years after Moscow launched its full-invasion.

Moscow’s military and political preconditions for peace remain unacceptable to Kyiv and to its Western partners. The Kremlin has also repeatedly turned down Kyiv’s requests for a meeting between Zelensky and Putin.

Meanwhile, the US administration approved $200m (£150m) of additional military sales to Ukraine on Tuesday following a phone call between Zelensky and Trump, in which the two leaders also discussed defence co-operation and drone production.

Ukraine has been using drones to hit Russia’s refineries and energy facilities, while Moscow has focused its air attacks on Ukraine’s cities.

The Kyiv City Military Administration said the toll of an attack on the city last week rose to 32 after a man died of his injuries. The strike was one of the deadliest on Kyiv since the start of the invasion.

Ukrainian authorities on Wednesday reported that a Russian attack on a holiday camp in the central region of Zaporizhzhia left two dead and 12 wounded.

“There’s no military sense in this attack. It’s just cruelty to scare people,” Zelensky said.

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order hitting India with an additional 25% tariff over its purchases of Russian oil. That will raise the total tariff on Indian…

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order hitting India with an additional 25% tariff over its purchases of Russian oil.

That will raise the total tariff on Indian imports to the United States to 50% – among the highest rates imposed by the US.

The new rate will come into effect in 21 days, so on 27 August, according to the executive order.

A response from India’s foreign ministry on Wednesday said Delhi had already made clear its stance on imports from Russia, and reiterated that the tariff is “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”.

“It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,” the brief statement read.

“India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,” it added.

The US president had earlier warned he would raise levies, saying India doesn’t “care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine”.

On Wednesday, the White House said in a statement that the “Russian Federation’s actions in Ukraine pose an ongoing threat to US national security and foreign policy, necessitating stronger measures to address the national emergency”.

It said India’s imports of Russian oil undermine US efforts to counter Russia’s activities in Ukraine.

It added that the US will determine which other countries import oil from Russia, and will “recommend further actions to the President as needed”.

Oil and gas are Russia’s biggest exports, and Moscow’s biggest customers include China, India and Turkey.

The threatened tariff hike follows meetings on Wednesday by Trump’s top envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow, aimed at securing peace between Russia and Ukraine.

The additional tariff would mean a steep 50% duty on key Indian exports like textiles, gems and jewellery, auto parts, and seafood, hitting major job-creating sectors.

Electronics, including iPhones, and pharma remain exempt for now.

Delhi has previously called Trump’s threat to raise tariffs over its purchase of oil from Russia “unjustified and unreasonable”.

In an earlier statement, a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry said the US had encouraged India to import Russian gas at the start of the conflict, “for strengthening global energy markets stability”.

He said India “began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict”.

The latest threatened tariff demonstrates Trump’s willingness to impose sanctions related to the war in Ukraine even against nations that the US considers to be important allies or trading partners.

This could be a warning that other countries could feel a real bite if Trump ramps up those kind of sanctions once Friday’s deadline passes, when the US president has threatened new sanctions on Russia and to place 100% tariffs on countries that purchase its oil.

This would not be the first time the Trump administration has imposed secondary tariffs, which are also in place to punish buyers of Venezuelan oil.

India has previously criticised the US – its largest trading partner – for introducing the levies, when the US itself is still doing trade with Russia.

Last year, the US traded goods worth an estimated $3.5bn (£2.6bn) with Russia, despite tough sanctions and tariffs.

Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have in the past referred to each other as friends and, during Trump’s first term, attended political rallies in each others’ countries.

But that has not stopped Trump from hitting India with the levies, suggesting diverging interests between New Delhi and Washington.

The Federation of India Exports Organisations has called the decision to impose additional tariffs “extremely shocking”, adding that it will hit 55% of India’s exports to America.

The tariffs are expected to make Indian goods far costlier in the US, and could cut US-bound exports by 40–50%, according to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), a Delhi-based think tank.

“India should remain calm, avoid retaliation for at least six months, and recognise that meaningful trade negotiations with the US cannot proceed under threats or mistrust,” former Indian trade official and head of GTRI, Ajay Srivastava, said.

India has called Donald Trump’s threat of “substantially” higher tariffs over its purchase of oil from Russia “unjustified and unreasonable”.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president warned he would raise levies, saying India “don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine”.

India is currently among the largest buyers of Russian oil. It has become an important export market for Moscow after several European countries cut trade when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump did not specify what the new tariff would be, but it comes just days after he unveiled a hefty 25% levy on India.

In a statement, a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry, Randhir Jaiswal, said the US had encouraged India to import Russian gas at the start of the conflict, “for strengthening global energy markets stability”.

He said India “began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict”.

India also criticised the US – its largest trading partner – for introducing the tariffs, when the US itself is still doing trade with Russia. Last year, the US traded goods worth an estimated $3.5bn (£2.6bn) with Russia, despite tough sanctions and tariffs.

“Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” the foreign ministry statement said.

“The targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable,” it added.

Last week, Trump had described India as a “friend” but said its tariffs on US products “are far too high” and he warned of an unspecified “penalty” over its trade with Russia.

His latest Truth Social post again struck a critical tone.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits,” he wrote.

“Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not ordered India’s oil refineries to stop buying Russian oil, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the situation.

Ajay Srivastava, a former Indian trade official and head of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), a Delhi-based think tank, said Trump’s claims about India’s oil trade with Russia are misleading for several reasons.

He told the BBC that the trade has been transparent and broadly understood by the US.

Mr Srivastava said India ramped up purchases of oil to help stabilise global markets after Western sanctions disrupted supplies – helping to stop a global oil price shock.

He also said that India’s oil refineries – both public and private – decide where to buy crude oil based on factors like price, supply security, and export rules. They operate independently of the government and do not need its approval to buy from Russia or other countries.

Though relations between the US and Russia warmed after Trump returned to the White house in January, the US president has more recently toughened his rhetoric against the Kremlin and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump has questioned whether Putin is truly committed to peace with Ukraine. In Monday’s Truth Social post he used stern language, describing the Russian military as the “Russian War Machine”.

Russia’s leader has repeatedly said he is ready for peace but only if Kyiv meets certain conditions, such as recognising Ukrainian territories that Russia has occupied.

Trump has threatened Moscow with severe tariffs targeting its oil and other exports if a ceasefire with Ukraine is not agreed by 8 August.

US envoy Steve Witkoff is due to visit Russia later this week, where he is expected to meet Putin.

A top United States official has accused India of financing Russia’s war in Ukraine by buying oil from Moscow, as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on New Delhi to…

A top United States official has accused India of financing Russia’s war in Ukraine by buying oil from Moscow, as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on New Delhi to cut off its energy imports from Russia.

“What he (Trump) said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia,” Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff at the White House and one of Trump’s most influential aides, said in an interview with Fox News.

India is the second-largest buyer of Russian oil, after China, and more than 30 percent of its fuel is sourced from Moscow, providing revenue to the Kremlin amid Western sanctions. New Delhi imported just 1 percent of its oil from Russia before the Ukraine war started in 2022.

Miller’s criticism was among the strongest yet by the Trump administration – which came after the US slapped a 25 percent tariff on Indian products on Friday as a result of its purchase of military equipment and energy from Russia. The Trump administration also threatened additional penalties if India continued its purchase of arms and oil from Russia.

“People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil. That’s an astonishing fact,” Miller also said on the show.

The US aide tempered his criticism by noting Trump’s relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he described as “tremendous”.

Last week, Trump also underscored the “friendship” with India on the day he announced the tariffs on Asia’s second-largest economy.

While India was “our friend”, it had always bought most of its military equipment from Russia and was “Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE – ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on July 30.

“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.”

Trump has threatened 100 percent tariffs on US imports from countries that buy Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine. The US president has also criticised India for being a member of BRICS, of which Russia and China are founding members.

Some analysts say the tough stance taken by the Trump administration might be aimed at pressuring Russia, while others see it as a pressure tactic to get New Delhi to agree to terms set by Washington, as the two countries are engaged in trade talks. Trump wants to reduce the US trade deficit with India, which stands at $45bn.

‘Time-tested’ ties

Meanwhile, Indian government sources told the Reuters news agency on Saturday that New Delhi will keep buying oil from Moscow despite US threats.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said its relationship with Russia was “steady and time-tested” and should not be seen through the prism of a third country. New Delhi’s ties to Moscow go back to the Soviet era.

Russia is the leading supplier of oil and defence equipment to India. According to a March report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia remains the biggest arms supplier of equipment and systems for the Indian Armed Forces.

Prime Minister Modi travelled to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin last year, as New Delhi has tried to balance its ties between the West and Russia. He has since met Putin several times at international forums.

India has historically bought most of its crude from the Middle East, but this has changed since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as India bought the oil at discounted rates after the West shunned Russia to punish it.

New Delhi bought 68,000 barrels per day of crude oil from Russia in January 2022. By June of the same year, oil imports rose to 1.12 million barrels per day. The daily imports peaked at 2.15 million in May 2023 and have varied since.

Supplies rose as high as nearly 40 percent of India’s imports at one point, making Moscow the largest supplier of crude to New Delhi, the Press Trust of India reported, citing data from Kpler, a data analytics company.

India says its imports from Russia was within legal norms, adding that it has helped stabilise the global crude prices.

Mazzaltov World News provides you with the latest live coverage of Current Affairs, Sports, Health, Weather, Entertainment, Business and Travel News from around the world.

Here’s where things stand on Thursday 12 June 2025:

An Air India passenger plane bound for London crashed into a medical college in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad after takeoff, killing more than 240 people in one of India’s worst airline disasters in decades, officials said, with one survivor among the passengers.

Air India confirmed that 241 of the 242 people on Air India Flight 171 died.

Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer in Ahmedabad, said medical students who were in the college’s hostel when the Boeing 787 plane hit the building have also been killed.

At Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital, Dr Dhaval Gameti said he had examined the lone survivor of the crash brought in, whom he identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. “He was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body,” Gameti told The Associated Press. “But he seems to be out of danger.”

The flight crashed shortly after takeoff from the Indian city. The airline said in a statement that the carried 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian and seven Portuguese.

Authorities in London confirmed that the plane was due to land at the city’s Gatwick airport at 6:25pm local time (17:25GMT).

Here’s what happened today

We will be closing this live page soon. Here is a recap of today’s main events:

An Air India passenger plane bound for London crashed in the city of Ahmedabad, in India’s western province of Gujarat, shortly after takeoff; 241 of the 242 people on the flight died, with Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national, the sole survivor.

The plane crashed into a medical college, reportedly killing an unknown number of medical students who were in the college’s hostel.

India’s aviation minister said a formal investigation has been initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in line with international protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says there is “no indication” right now that there are any safety issues with Boeing’s 787-8 Dreamliner – the aircraft that crashed.

Health officials wait to take DNA samples from family members of the victims

Special prayers offered at Hindu temples in London

About 100 people have gathered at a massive ornate temple in the Neasden area of the British capital, where much of the community has ties to the state of Gujarat, where the Air India flight crashed.

Yogvivekdas Swami said people were praying for all those affected.

“We will offer prayers for the unfortunate people who have passed away, the passengers, the crew, the pilots,” he said.

“Also for all their family members, that they may find strength and courage at this very difficult and challenging time.”

British couple post story on social media before boarding flight

A British couple, reportedly on the Air India flight that crashed, filmed a video of themselves at the airport before boarding.

Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who run a spiritual wellness centre, laughed and joked on their Instagram story as they discussed a “10-hour flight back to England”.

In an earlier post, they shared their “mind-blowing” trip to India and their intention to create a vlog about it.

Police say Air India survivor leapt from crashing plane

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the only known survivor out of the 242 people on board an Air India plane that crashed in Ahmedabad, had been sitting near an emergency exit of the London-bound flight and managed to jump out, police said.

Photos: Community members gather outside British survivor’s family home

Community members stand outside the home of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the British survivor of the Air India crash, in Leicester, UK

British MP raises safety questions with Air India, UK aviation agency

Shivani Raja, a British parliament member who represents a district in Leicester, in the East Midlands, says she raised questions about the safety of the Air India flight.

“This flight route is very popular amongst the British Gujarati community, and many have been left understandably shaken by today’s horrific events,” Raja said in a statement shared on X.

“My office remains open to support local residents who have been impacted.”

As we’ve been reporting, officials say 53 passengers on board the Air India flight that crashed were British nationals.

How many people were killed on the ground in Ahmedabad?

That remains unclear.

“We are still verifying the number of dead, including those killed in the building where the plane crashed,” Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer, told the Reuters news agency.

As we reported earlier, an official with the Federation of All India Medical Association said at least five students were killed when part of the plane fell on top of the dining area of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad.

Nearly 50 others were also injured, the official said.

We’ll bring you more updates when we can.

US transportation chief says no immediate safety concerns with Boeing aircraft

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says there is “no indication” right now that there are any safety issues with Boeing’s 787-8 Dreamliner – the aircraft that crashed in India.

“We have no preliminary information,” Duffy told reporters during a news conference.

“We don’t have that information yet. It’s very new. Our teams are just going to deploy [to India] right now,” he said.

India’s home affairs minister visits people injured by the crash at hospital

Amit Shah has visited the sole survivor of the crash, as well as some of those who had been on the ground and were injured when the plane crashed.

In a post on X, he said he also spoke to the “affected family members and assured them of every possible support required for the swift recovery of the injured”.

The final moments before Air India Flight 171 crashes

A man who said he works a few metres from where the plane crashed has described what he saw in Ahmedabad.

“I heard a loud noise and came outside, and saw a big cloud of smoke. People started running. There was chaos,” he said.

British pilots group urges ‘full, thorough investigation’

Amy Leversidge, general secretary of the British Airline Pilots’ Association, says “pilots around the globe are deeply saddened” by news of the Air India crash.

“It is vital a full and thorough investigation is now carried out without interference or unhelpful speculation about the contributory factors so that future tragedies can be avoided,” Leversidge said in a statement.

As we’ve been reporting, the cause of the crash remains unclear as the investigation continues.

Where is Ahmedabad, the Indian city where Air India flight crashed?

Ahmedabad is the largest city in India’s western province of Gujarat, about 500km (310 miles) north of Mumbai.

Sitting on the banks of the Sabarmati River, Ahmedabad is home to nearly 7.4 million people, according to official statistics.

Ahmedabad’s airport – formally known as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport – is located in the city’s northeast.

A passenger reads a message at a self-check-in kiosk in the departure area of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad last year

There are indications that something went wrong ‘late in the takeoff roll’

Todd Curtis, the CEO of airsafe.com and a former safety engineer for Boeing, spoke to Al Jazeera about what he thinks happened to the Air India flight.

He said in the videos he has seen that the aircraft had a normal roll down the runway, but after takeoff, the climb stopped fairly soon, the aircraft levelled out, and then it slowly descended, so it was “under control” when it was descending.

He said he didn’t see “any flames or pieces falling off”, which, combined with the witness testimony that mentioned an explosion, led him to suspect that, sometime late in the takeoff roll, something went wrong, but they were too far down the runway to stop.

He said the landing gear appears to have stayed down throughout the time the plane was airborne.

Typically, within 30 seconds after taking off, the gear is either completely up or coming into the aircraft, so the fact that there was not even an attempt to raise the gear, from his perspective, suggests that “something seriously went wrong very early in the flight”.

Indian authorities turn to DNA testing to identify victims

Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer in Ahmedabad, says “most of the bodies have been charred beyond recognition” after the plane hit the medical college hostel, killing and injuring dozens of students.

Dhananjay Dwivedi, a civil official in Gujarat, the state where Ahmedabad is located, told reporters that DNA testing arrangements were being made.

Air India confirms 241 of 242 people on board killed, only 1 survivor

“We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital,” the airline has said in its latest update on the crash.

“The survivor is a British national of Indian origin,” it added.

The airline also confirmed that the plane crashed with 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board.

“Air India offers its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. Our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of all those affected, their families and loved ones.”

Canadian citizen killed in crash identified

Media outlets in Canada are reporting that the Canadian citizen who died in the crash was a woman named Nirali Sureshkumar Patel.

Patel was a dentist from the city of Mississauga, just west of Toronto, in the province of Ontario.

Patel’s husband told The Canadian Press that he was booking travel to India for himself and the couple’s one-year-old child.

“That was my wife,” he told the news agency, without providing his name. “I am not in a state to speak right now.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his condolences, saying he was “saddened” to learn that a Canadian from Mississauga was among those killed in the “tragic” crash.

FAA engaged Boeing in crash probe: US transportation secretary

Sean Duffy says his office is working with the the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to assist India in its investigation into what happened while Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) investigators are deploying to the crash site.

“We are prepared to send additional resources to get the data we need to ensure the safety of the flying public,” the US transportation secretary said in a post on X.

“The FAA has already engaged Boeing and GE to review any necessary information as part of the investigation,” Duffy said.

“As the NTSB leads the investigation, we will not hesitate to implement any safety recommendations that may arise. We will follow the facts and put safety first.”

India’s aviation minister says a formal investigation has been initiated

Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu has announced that “a formal investigation” into the crash has been “initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in line with international protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)”.

In a post on X, he said New Delhi is putting together a “high-level committee comprising experts from multiple disciplines to examine the matter in detail”.

Still unclear why plane didn’t climb upon takeoff, expert says

As we’ve been reporting, the investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing, and experts say it is too early to say what exactly brought down the plane.

Former FAA and NTSB crash investigator Jeff Guzzetti told The Associated Press that it remains unclear why Air India Flight 171 was having difficulty climbing as it took off from the airport in Ahmedabad.

Video of the plane from right before the crash does not show any smoke or fire, so he said it does not appear that a bird strike was an issue. And even if the plane lost one engine, the second engine should be able to carry it aloft, Guzzetti added.

He told The AP that it’s possible that both engines started to “roll back” and lose power at the same time. “This happened on a [Boeing] 777 crash coming into Heathrow about 15 years ago. It was a dual engine rollback due to icing in the fuel. So there could be a fuel issue,” he said.

“Usually, fuel contamination issues rear their ugly head during takeoff.”

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/2025-05-15T160402Z_1453252179_RC2IT5ADIO6G_RTRMADP_3_INDIA-TURKEY-CELEBI-1749721352.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C578&quality=80" alt="A boy looks at Air India airline passenger aircrafts parked at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, India, February 1, 2024.
If you’re just joining us

Let’s bring you up to speed on the latest developments:

Media outlets in India are reporting that a passenger has survived the crash and has been taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Air India says it is working with local authorities on emergency response efforts as the investigation into what happened continues.

Experts say that while it remains too early to speculate about the cause of the crash, questions are swirling around whether the plane was properly configured for takeoff.

Boeing, the US corporation that manufactured the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed, says it is “in contact” with the airline and stands “ready to support them”.

Condolences are pouring in from around the world, with global leaders including UN chief Guterres expressing grief and support for all those affected.

The tail of the plane that crashed in Ahmedabad, India

Medical students hostel: What we know about where the plane crashed

As we’ve been reporting, Air India Flight 171 went down shortly after takeoff from the airport in Ahmedabad.

According to local media reports, the plane crashed into the hostel of BJ Medical College, located in a residential area outside the airport, during lunch hour. Officials said part of the plane fell on the college’s dining area.

Gujarat health secretary Dhananjay Dwivedi told reporters: “Ahmedabad Civil Hospital students hostel, staff quarters and other residential areas are located in the area where the plane crashed.”

Dwivedi added that “residents of that area were also injured” in the incident.

Parts of the plane’s body were scattered around the building into which it crashed. The tail of the plane was stuck on top of the building.

Ramila, the mother of a student at the medical college, told the Indian news agency ANI that her son had gone to the hostel for his lunch break when the plane crashed. “My son is safe, and I have spoken to him. He jumped from the second floor, so he suffered some injuries,” she said.

The plane’s tail is seen stuck on a building after the crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025

While India’s military is far larger than Pakistan’s, both are estimated to have similar numbers of missiles with nuclear warheads.

Both countries are also major arms importers. From 2020 to 2024, India was the second-largest importer in the world, behind Ukraine, getting the largest share of its weapons from Russia.

Pakistan was the fifth-largest importer during that time, getting most weapons from China.

India’s Amritsar ‘still on red alert’

Authorities in the Indian city of Amritsar have issued a red alert, warning residents to stay indoors and away from windows, amid the continued tensions between India and Pakistan.

In a statement, Amritsar’s district collector said the power supply in the city had been restored, “but we are still on red alert”, according to the ANI news agency.

“Please don’t move out of your house; stay indoors and away from windows. We will be informing you when we get the green signal. Please ensure compliance and please don’t panic,” the statement said.

Amritsar is located in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, about 30km (19 miles) from the border with Pakistan. Blasts had previously been heard there on Friday.

AIndus Waters Treaty remains suspended despite truce: Report

The Reuters news agency, citing four government sources, is reporting that the key water-sharing pact between India and Pakistan remains suspended despite the ceasefire agreement on Saturday.

India had pulled out of the pact, which regulates the division of water from the Indus River and its tributaries, after blaming Pakistan for the deadly attack targeting Hindu tourists in Pahalgam.

An Indian government source told Reuters there was “no change in stand” on the treaty, while another source from Pakistan’s water ministry was quoted as saying, “Indus Waters Treaty was not really a part of [ceasefire] discussions”.

Indian sources also told Reuters that other punitive measures, such as trade suspension and visa cancellations, would remain in place for now.

OIC calls for dialogue to resolve India, Pakistan disputes

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has released a statement saying it welcomes the truce and appreciates the “efforts of intermediary countries”.

“We call on the international community to encourage Pakistan and India to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve outstanding issues,” said the OIC, which represents 57 states.

“We stress the need for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue in accordance with Security Council resolutions to avoid tension between two nuclear powers in South Asia,” the statement added.

“We are concerned about the military escalation in South Asia and call for restraint and the avoidance of destabilising the region.”

How did the fighting begin?

The countries have fought several wars over the territory, which both claim in full, but administer separate portions of Kashmir since gaining independence from British rule in 1947.

The ceasefire comes after four days of attacks and counter-attacks by both sides that has killed more than 60 people and forced thousands of civilians flee their homes along their border as well as in divided Kashmir.

The fighting was touched off by an attack last month in the Indian-administered side of Kashmir that killed 26 tourists, mostly Hindu men, which New Delhi blamed on Islamabad.

India accused the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba – a UN-designated terrorist organisation – of carrying out the attack, but Islamabad has denied any involvement and called for an independent probe.

Armed groups have stepped up attacks in Kashmir since 2019, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist government revoked its limited autonomy and took the state under direct rule from New Delhi.

If you’re just joining us

Let’s bring you up to speed:

The India-Pakistan ceasefire agreed on Saturday appears to be holding, with calm reported on both sides of the border hours after the two countries accused each other of violations.

People displaced by the conflict in Indian-administered Kashmir have begun returning to their homes and say the truce has brought a sense of safety.

The city of Amritsar in India’s Punjab has lifted a red alert imposed overnight, and officials and residents say the situation has returned to normal.

Trump has promised to “increase trade substantially” with India and Pakistan after praising their leaders on their “heroic decision”.

The Reuters news agency reports that punitive measures, including the suspension of visas, trade and the Indus Waters Treaty, remain in place despite the truce.

Timeline: India-Pakistan escalation

Residents of Pakistan’s Karachi hope ‘sane minds’ prevail

There is a sense of relief in Pakistan post the ceasefire announcement yesterday.

There is not much activity on the streets of the southern city of Karachi, given that it’s Sunday and life takes a late start in this metropolis.

The true cost of the brief yet deadly conflict remains unknown, but people here are adamant that Pakistan ended up as the “winner”.

The sentiment remains the same across the border in India as people on both sides remain satisfied that the rival got a “befitting response” and it was a “lesson learned” for the other side.

“I was happy our forces carried out that large-scale attack yesterday morning. We can’t just take hit after hit and remain defensive without a response,” Ahmed Yar, lining up at a tea stall in Karachi, told Al Jazeera.

“Not much happened in Karachi, so there was not a lot of fear or panic, but now that there’s a ceasefire, I wish it stays in place and sane minds prevail. We all need to go back to normalcy and work on issues plaguing our country.”

India’s Amritsar lifts red alert

Authorities in Amritsar say the city, which was under a red alert overnight, can now return to “normal activities”, ANI reports.

Residents of the city told the agency that people in the city are “leading normal lives”.

“We are getting ration, water and oil normally … I do not want the peace in country to ever be disrupted … No country can progress through wars. People in India want progress,” one man said.

Trump promises to increase trade with India, Pakistan

The US president has again taken to Truth Social, his social media site, to praise the leaders of India and Pakistan.

“I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive a this historic and heroic decision,” he wrote.

“While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir,” he added.

India’s defence minister hails nuclear tests of 1998

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has shared a post celebrating the Indian scientists who contributed to the country’s nuclear tests on National Technology Day.

“We proudly recall the exceptional efforts of our scientists that led to the successful Pokhran tests in 1998,” he wrote on X.

“It was a defining moment in India’s history,” he added.

Calm returns to cities in Indian-administered Kashmir: Reports

Earlier, we brought you testimony from a journalist in Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir who said the guns have fallen silent there for the first time in two weeks.

Now, India’s ANI and PTI news agencies are reporting that the situation appears to have returned to normal in a number of locations across Indian-administered Kashmir this morning.

ANI reported that the “situation seems normal this morning” in Poonch “after days of heavy shelling by Pakistan”.

“No drones, firing or shelling was reported overnight,” in Poonch, as well as Samba and Kupwara, ANI said.

PTI also reported that situation seems to be normal in other locations, including Budgam, Akhnoor and Mendhar.

‘Situation is peaceful’ at Amritsar airport

Yadwinder Singh, an Indian official, has told the country’s ANI news agency that the “situation is peaceful” this morning at the ACP airport in Amritsar, about 30km (19 miles) from the border with Pakistan.

Singh said that “some rumours are being spread, but there is adequate security” and “it is peaceful now”.

“There is no drone activity,” he added. “People should not panic.”

Singh also appealed to the media to “verify the reports coming to them” in light of “false rumours being spread by people”.

The report came hours after authorities said the city remains on “red alert”.

EU’s top diplomat welcomes ceasefire

Kaja Kallas says she spoke with both India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar after the ceasefire was announced.

She described the deal as “a vital step toward de-escalation” and said “all efforts must be made to ensure it is respected”.

“The EU remains committed to peace, stability, and counter-terrorism in the region,” she said.

India accuses Pakistan of violating truce

The optimism around the ceasefire was shortlived because India is now accusing Pakistan of violating the ceasefire.

Just hours before, both countries had agreed to a land, sea and air ceasefire.

Then, the chief minister of Indian-administered Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, tweeted to say that there were drones spotted. He said there have been explosions in Jammu and Srinagar, and asked what has happened to the ceasefire?

And India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has reacted, accusing Pakistan of violating the ceasefire, and saying the Indian armed forces have remained vigilant and have been asked to respond to any violations appropriately.

The ceasefire announcement itself was sudden.

It was announced by US President Donald Trump during the day, saying that India and Pakistan had agreed to the ceasefire and details of it would be worked out.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that both countries would hold talks in a more neutral place.

Well, of course, there’s no official word whether India has agreed to those talks. What we know, the official word is India agreed to the ceasefire, and now India is accusing Pakistan of those ceasefire violations.

A recap of recent developments

Loud explosions have been heard in Srinagar, in Indian-administered Kashmir, hours after India and Pakistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire following days of deadly cross-border attacks.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri accuses Pakistan of violating the understanding arrived at by the two countries, and says the Indian armed forces have been instructed to “deal strongly” with any repetition.

In response, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry says the country was committed to the ceasefire and blames India for the violations.

Earlier, politicians and residents of India and Pakistan, as well as the areas in Kashmir that each country administers, welcomed the news of the ceasefire, which was first announced by US President Donald Trump.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has commended Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif on the agreement, and said the deal also included the start of talks on “a broad set of issues at a neutral site”.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said that more than 30 countries had helped to facilitate that agreement.

Could India, Pakistan use nuclear weapons? Here’s what their doctrines say As India and Pakistan escalate shelling and missile attacks, an all-out war between the two sides would be the…

Pakistan’s military said strikes have been launched against Indian military sites as part of operation “Bunyan Marsoos” after three Pakistani airbases were targeted by Indian “air-to-surface missiles”.

Pakistan Civil Aviation said it is closing its airspace from 3:15am local time (22:15 GMT) on Saturday until noon (07:00 GMT) following the latest attacks.

Explosions and air raid sirens have been heard across Indian-administered Kashmir and India’s Punjab state as the Indian military said drones were sighted in 26 locations and are being “tracked and engaged”.

Three people were reported injured in a drone strike on the Indian city of Ferozepur in Punjab state.

Approximately 50 people have been reported killed so far – 33 of them in Pakistan – since India launched missiles on Wednesday that it said targeted “terrorist camps” in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Could India, Pakistan use nuclear weapons? Here’s what their doctrines say

As India and Pakistan escalate shelling and missile attacks, an all-out war between the two sides would be the first ever between nuclear-armed nations.

What are the nuclear arsenals of India and Pakistan like?

And when – according to their nuclear doctrines – could they use nuclear weapons?

Click here for a closer look at their arsenals and the policies that govern their use.

Indian army denounces ‘blatant escalation’ in Pakistan’s deployment of drones

In a statement posted on X, India’s military said it detected “multiple enemy armed drones” flying over the Khasa Cantt military base in the Indian city of Amritsar early on Saturday.

“The hostile drones were instantly engaged and destroyed by our air defence units,” the statement said.

“Pakistan’s blatant attempt to violate India’s sovereignty and endanger civilians is unacceptable,” it added.

Five killed by Pakistani shelling in Jammu region: Reports

Earlier, we reported that Rajouri district commissioner in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir region, Raj Kumar Thappa, was killed after the Pakistani military struck his home as part of a spate of shelling targeting Rajouri, Poonch and Jammu districts.

Citing local officials, The New Indian Express and National Herald newspapers now report that two more people – including a two-year-old child – were killed and three others were injured in the attack on Rajouri town.

A 55-year-old woman was also reportedly killed when a mortar shell struck her home in Kanghra-Galhutta village in Poonch district, while a resident of Bidipur Jatta village was killed in the R S Pura sector of Jammu district.

‘Tremendous fighting’ reported in Pakistan’s Sialkot

We are getting reports that in the city of Sialkot, there’s been tremendous fighting near the disputed border.

In the last 48 hours, Pakistan has also reported that it has downed at least 77 drones.

Residents in Lahore and Karachi have also reported hearing sounds of explosions in the last few hours near densely populated areas.

This is where the concern is, that it is happening in civilian areas in both countries.

There have been efforts to find a way to de-escalate the situation, including efforts by the US secretary of state, as well as the Iranian and Saudi Arabian foreign ministers.

But Pakistan said that it has to respond and that it cannot sit silent amid the attack.

First all-out war between nuclear-armed nations?

So far, India and Pakistan have used missiles, drones, diplomacy and information to battle each other since the April 22 attack on Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, in which 26 civilians were killed.

But as they slide rapidly towards a full-blown military conflict, a dangerous reality stares not just at the 1.6 billion people of the two countries, but at the world: If an all-out war were to break out between them, it would be the first ever between two nuclear-armed nations.

India and Pakistan fought in the icy heights of Kargil in 1999, a year after the South Asian neighbours became nuclear states.

But that was a contained war: Already, in the past three days, India and Pakistan each claim to have hit much wider swaths of the other’s territory than was the case in 1999.

The last full war between India and Pakistan was in 1971, before either had tested a nuclear device.

And though the US and the Soviet Union were locked in the Cold War for more than 40 years, they carefully managed their tensions, including through a series of proxy wars in third countries, to avoid engaging in direct military conflict.

Pakistan state media claims Indian websites hacked as part of ‘Bunyan Marsoos’

Earlier, we reported that Pakistan claimed it had hit India’s power grid with a cyberattack launched as part of operation Bunyan Marsoos.

Pakistan’s state-run PTV News now reports that several sensitive Indian online domains have been targeted as part of that cyberattack, including websites belonging to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, the Border Security Forces, and the Crime Research Investigation Agency.

This claim could not be independently verified. The Indian government has yet to comment.

India and Pakistan have not declared war, but ‘effectively at war’: Analyst

Michael Kugelman, a South Asia analyst, spoke to Al Jazeera a little earlier about the overnight and early-morning fighting between India and Pakistan.

This is some of what he said.

They have not formally declared war, but they are effectively at war. There have been increasing hostilities, and we see that after this series of strikes from India, Pakistan responded almost instantaneously, and they continue to fight.

My understanding is that the air forces are facing off with a dog fight. I think that we are seeing India and Pakistan, two nuclear states, at war for the first time since 1999.

The fog of war is very deep this time compared to previous India-Pakistan crises, and one reason for that is because of social media and disinformation and how that affects the fog of war. It does seem that you have a lot of accusations and then denials and so on from each side.

So it is really hard to know exactly what is going on. And there has been a lot of allegations about what has been going on in the last few hours, what’s happened and what has not happened. But what we do know is that both countries have attacked each other’s military facilities and that is very escalatory for sure.

Chief minister of India-administered Kashmir reports death of district official

In a statement posted on X, Omar Abdullah, chief minister of the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir region, said that Raj Kumar Thapa, a district commissioner in Rajouri town, was killed after his residence was hit by shelling from Pakistan.

“I’ve no words to express my shock and sadness at this terrible loss of life,” Abdullah wrote.

Shelling and intense fire have been reported since early on Saturday along the Line of Control dividing India and Pakistan.

AMore on huge explosion heard in Indian-administered Kashmir

Journalist Umar Mehraj, who is reporting from Srinagar, told Al Jazeera that at approximately 5:45am local time (23:45 GMT), residents heard a loud explosion in the Indian-administered Kashmir near the Line of Control (LoC).

“It is unclear whether the strike was fired by Pakistan,” he said, but added that the explosion was “louder and more intense” than previously reported blasts on Friday.

“This is one of the most intense clashes we have seen in recent years,” he said.

Mehraj also reported of power outages and the blaring of air raid sirens in the area following the explosion.

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/2025-05-09T113904Z_315755132_RC29EEACAPH6_RTRMADP_3_INDIA-PAKISTAN-1-1746845117.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C482&quality=80" alt="Indian security personnel search a Kashmiri man's bag on a street, following clashes between India and Pakistan, in Srinagar, Kashmir May 9, 2025.
Authorities announce temporary closure of airports across north, west India

India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued a series of Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) announcing the temporary closure of 32 airports across the country’s north and west for all civil flight operations.

The closures will be in effect from May 9-14 and impacted airports span the Indian states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat, as well as Indian-administered Kashmir.

A full list of impacted airports can be found at this link.

‘Situation extremely critical’ as Pakistan and India trade heavy fire

It was after the attack on the airfield, which shook the city of Rawalpindi in the early hours of the morning – and after several days of sending suicide drones all over Pakistan – that the Indian air force attacked these airbases with standoff munitions, which means they must have fired these from a distance.

After that, Pakistan launched a massive retaliation.

As we speak, we are being told that drones are still hovering over Delhi.

Pakistan has struck several major front-line military bases. They are claiming that they have destroyed a missile battery, they’ve destroyed several airfields, and that they’ve attacked artillery gun positions.

And the Pakistani prime minister has called a meeting of the National Command Authority. Now this is a step higher because this deals with Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, and therefore, the situation is extremely critical.

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/AA-20250510-37901850-37901846-SECURITY_MEASURES_TIGHTENED_IN_RAWALPINDI_AFTER_INDIA_LAUNCHES_DRONE_ATTACK_ON_KARACHI-1746847176.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513&quality=80" alt="MAY 10: Pakistani security forces are seen outside Nur Khan Air Base, where an Indian missiles struck in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on May 10, 2025.
Islamabad says India’s suspension of Indus Waters Treaty an ‘attack’ on Pakistan’s people

We have reported extensively on the decision of India to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty amid the escalating conflict with neighbouring Pakistan.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pakistan has issued further comments on the development, calling it an “attack” on Pakistan’s people.

The spokesman said that from Islamabad’s perspective, the treaty “remains fully in force and is binding on the parties”, according to a transcript of a briefing published on the ministry’s website.

“There is no provision in the treaty to hold it in abeyance,” the spokesman added.

“Millions of people are dependent on the water being regulated by this treaty. The Indian decision is equivalent to an attack on the people of Pakistan and its economy.”

Can India and Pakistan avoid a fourth war over Kashmir?

It’s the biggest military escalation between India and Pakistan in decades. Missile strikes, drone attacks, and deadly shelling have struck on both sides of the border in the disputed region of Kashmir.

With dozens of civilians dead and both countries trading blame, can the two nuclear powers contain the dispute?

Pakistan says Indian military sites targeted

Right after morning prayers here in Pakistan, the Pakistan military launched its counteroffensive against India, codenamed “Bunyan Marsoos”, after a verse in the Quran.

It has targeted a number of sites across India. These are all military sites, including one missile station as well as two airfields.

According to military sources, all of these locations have been involved in targeting Pakistani civilians, places of worship, as well as military installations.

Pakistan had been saying that it did not want to go to this level, but it was forced to because after the May 7 attacks, Pakistan immediately responded, saying that it reserved the right … to respond and protect its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/AA-20250510-37901861-37901853-HINDISTANIN_KARACIYE_SIHA_SALDIRISI_DUZENLEMESININ_ARDINDAN_RAWALPINDIDE_GUVENLIK_ONLEMLERI_ARTIRILDI-1746843511.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513&quality=80" alt="RAWALPINDI, PAKISTAN - MAY 10: Pakistani security forces are seen outside Nur Khan Air Base, where an Indian missiles struck in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on May 10, 2025.
Pakistani PM calls National Command Authority meeting

Pakistan’s military has said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of the country’s top civilian and military body, which takes key national security decisions, including those related to the country’s nuclear arsenal.

We will bring you more information when we have it.

‘Intense night’ as Pakistan launches strikes on Indian targets

An intense night where multiple Pakistani airbases came under attack.

The Pakistani military says that all of those were thwarted.

But it was not just those aerial attacks. Across the Line of Control in Kashmir, in Sialkot, and across various sectors in Pakistan, there was intense firing and shelling, and in the past few minutes, we’ve heard from other cities as well, including Lahore and Karachi, where multiple explosions have been heard.

In the past few days, Pakistan said it had downed more than 80 drones that were fired into its territory by India.

So, all in all, it appears that all of these tensions that had been ratcheting up have finally culminated in this attack by Pakistan.

Pakistan said that it reserved the right to attack India, citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, because India carried out, according to Pakistani officials, an unprovoked attack and did not provide any proof for its allegations that Pakistan was in any way involved in terrorist activities on Indian soil.

What are BrahMos missiles?

We have been reporting on Pakistan’s operation Bunyan Marsoos, which has targeted several military sites in India and Indian-administered Kashmir over recent hours.

One of the attacks has reportedly hit a BrahMos missile storage site in Beas in India’s Punjab province.

BrahMos missiles are supersonic missiles with a top range of 800km (497 miles) that can be launched from a range of military vehicles, including submarines, ships and fighter aircraft.

They were developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Russian rocket design bureau, NPO Mashinostroyeniya.

The name is a portmanteau of the Brahmaputra River in India and the Moskva River in Russia.

Pakistan’s operation targets Indian missile storage sites

According to the Pakistani military, there have been multiple assets which have been engaged, including its Fatah-1 medium-range missile system, which is being used to target those military facilities.

Pakistan said it was bound to carry out this attack after India carried out the attack on May 7 and killed its civilians and citizens.

All those sites that have been targeted are the ones that Pakistan said have been used to put targets on the backs of its citizens; India targeted mosques, places of worship, as well as military sites.

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/AFP__20250510__466T6ZP__v1__HighRes__PakistanIndiaKashmirUnrestConflict-1746839838.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513&quality=80" alt="Security personnel cordon off a road near Nur Khan military airbase after Indian strikes in Rawalpindi on May 10, 2025.
Pakistani state media claims India’s power grid hit by cyberattack

State-run outlet PTV News is now reporting that India’s power grid has been hit by a cyberattack launched as part of Operation Bunyan Marsoos.

This claim could not be independently verified. The Indian government has yet to comment.

We will bring you more information when we have it.

Sirens, loud explosion reported in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir

India’s ANI news agency is reporting an explosion in the Dibber area of Udhampur, in Indian-administered Kashmir.

A video clip posted by ANI showed smoke rising over the area where the reported explosion happened.

The report added that sirens were also activated following the incident, which happened just minutes after Pakistan’s military announced the launch of its retaliatory military operation against India.

More on Pakistan’s military operation against India

In a post on X, Al Jazeera’s correspondent Osama Bin Javaid said, according to military sources, Pakistan is attacking “multiple targets” across India.

Pakistan launched its operation right after dawn prayers on Saturday, he said.

G7 warns India-Pakistan military escalation a ‘serious threat’ to regional stability

The Group of Seven (G7) major countries urged maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan and called on them to engage in direct dialogue amid rising hostilities between the two nuclear-armed Asian neighbours.

“Further military escalation poses a serious threat to regional stability. We are deeply concerned for the safety of civilians on both sides,” according to the statement, which was posted in the official website of the government of Canada, a member of the G7.

“We continue to monitor events closely and express our support for a swift and lasting diplomatic resolution.”

Indian army postpones press conference due to attacks: Report

We have been reporting on “Bunyan Marsoos”, a military operation launched by Pakistan’s armed forces over the past hour targeting military sites in India and Indian-administered Kashmir.

Pakistani news outlet Samaa TV, citing security sources, now reports that the Indian Army has postponed a planned news conference due to the strikes. The same outlet reports that Pakistan has fired at least three “Fatah 2” missiles at Indian targets.

What does Pakistan military’s Operation Bunyan Marsoos mean?

The operation launched by Pakistan against India is part of a verse from Islam’s holy book, the Quran, which reads: Truly Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in battle array, as if they were a solid cemented structure.

Bunyan Marsoos is an Arabic phrase which directly translates into “a structure made of lead”.

In Quranic context, the phrase is used to describe the unity and strength of followers of Islam who are fighting for the cause of Allah.

New Delhi airport says ‘changing airspace conditions’ could impact operation

Earlier, we reported about Pakistan’s decision to close the country’s airspace due to the current tensions with India.

Meanwhile, in India, the operator of New Delhi airport said “changing airspace conditions and increased security measures” could affect some flights and length of security checks.

The advisory asked passengers to arrive early and cooperate with airline and security staff at the airport.

Pakistan responds to Indian attacks, launches operation ‘Bunyan Marsoos’

The military’s media wing – Inter-Services Public Relations – has announced that Pakistan has officially launched its retaliatory strikes against “Indian aggression”, codenamed operation Bunyan Marsoos.

Military sources have claimed that Pakistan has targeted airbase in Indian city of Udhampur and an air field in Pathankot, both of which were “destroyed”.

Security sources further claimed that a BrahMos missile’s storage site in Beas, in India’s Punjab province, was also hit.

More on the reported Indian missile attacks on Pakistani airbases

Pakistani army spokesman Ahmad Sharif said in a televised address that all Pakistani air force assets were safe after he claimed India launched missile attacks on three airbases.

He said that India targeted the Nur Khan airbase in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, Murid airbase in Chakwal city and Rafiqui airbase in the Jhang district in the eastern Punjab province.

Sharif said some of the missiles fired by India also went into Afghanistan, but did not yet provide evidence, which he claimed Pakistan possessed.

He blamed the “blatant acts of aggression” on the “paranoia within the Indian mindset”.

Pakistan launches strikes against India: State media

Citing security sources, Pakistan’s state-run news outlet PTV News has reported that Pakistan has “launched a counter-offensive against Indian aggression”, without providing more details.

We will bring you more information when we have it.

A recap of recent developments

As tensions soar between India and Pakistan, misinformation and unconfirmed rumours of attacks are rife on both sides of the Radcliffe Line.

Here’s what you need to know:

Pakistan’s military media wing said Indian fighter jets fired air-to-surface missiles at three of its airbases, but added that “all assets” are safe.

In light of the attacks, Pakistan’s Civil Aviation agency has closed its airspace for more than eight hours, with it slated to reopen at 12pm (07:00 GMT) local time on Saturday.

The Reuters news agency, citing witnesses, has reported that four blasts have been heard in Amritsar, a city in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab near the Pakistan border.

Multiple blasts have also been heard in Jammu city in Indian-administered Kashmir for a second day, and projectiles have been seen in the night sky after a blackout.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has slammed Pakistan’s “farcical” response after it again denied launching attacks across the border and claimed India fired ballistic missiles that fell on its own territory.

Pakistan’s military says there will be “no de-escalation” with India until it has responded to India’s Wednesday strikes.

Pakistan has denied claims by India’s armed forces that “military stations” in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Jammu and Udhampur, and in Punjab state’s Pathankot, were targeted in drone and missile attacks. No casualties were reported.

Pakistan’s information minister says his country has engaged only in a “defensive response so far” to India’s attacks on his country, as Pakistan’s military said India launched attack drones into Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least two civilians.

At least 48 people have been reported killed so far – 32 of them in Pakistan – since India launched missiles on Wednesday that it said targeted “terrorist camps” in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan retaliated with a barrage of artillery strikes.

The clashes follow escalating tension between the two nuclear-armed countries since a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which India blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan has denied any involvement.

What is the Line of Control?

With the fast-moving developments on the ground, let’s take a step back and look at what we mean by the Line of Control (LoC), a term our correspondents regularly use.

It is the de facto border dividing Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Indian-administered Kashmir.

The line originally marked the military front when the two countries declared a ceasefire in January 1949 after their first war over Kashmir.

It was formally named the LoC under the 1972 Simla Agreement, signed after the 1971 war that resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.

Clashes along Line of Control resume after hours of relative calm

Umar Mehra, a journalist based in Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir, said civilians living near the Line of Control that bisects Kashmir are increasingly fleeing as the situation is “escalating very dangerously” and cross-border fighting has resumed.

“After 13 hours of relative calm today, the clashes along the Line of Control have resumed. There are also reports of heavy exchanges of artillery along the Line of Control in Kupwara, Poonch, Uri, and Samba,” he told Al Jazeera.

“Civilians in the border area are living under growing fear, and thousands have fled their homes, seeking shelter in other areas or makeshift camps.”

IPL not likely to finish season ‘in the near future’

Raunak Kapoor, an Indian cricket broadcaster, says that while the Indian Premier League has been suspended for a week due to the tensions with Pakistan, it will likely be delayed for much longer.

“I don’t see them finishing [the season] in the near future,” he told Al Jazeera from Mumbai.

“We are probably looking at a time after the Indian monsoon [to complete the season], in September or October,” he added.

Kapoor said he believes the authorities will act much like they did during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the IPL was suspended around April and resumed in the UAE around September.

“They will certainly finish the league, whether they can manage it at home or not,” he said.

Explosions reported near Srinagar airport

The news agency Reuters, citing local officials, is reporting that there have been about 10 explosions around Srinagar airport in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Journalist Umar Mehraj told Al Jazeera that “multiple loud explosions were heard … near the Srinagar airport, after people had seen projectiles in the sky”.

“Panic spread among locals,” Meraj said from Indian-administered Kashmir.

Can India and Pakistan avoid a fourth war over Kashmir?

The biggest military escalation between India and Pakistan in decades continues.

Missile strikes, drone attacks, and deadly shelling have struck on both sides of the border in the disputed region of Kashmir.

With dozens of civilians dead and both countries trading blame, can the two nuclear powers contain the dispute?

International Crisis Group says world powers ‘indifferent’ to India-Pakistan crisis

The think tank says “foreign powers appear to have been somewhat indifferent” to the prospect of war, despite warnings of possible escalation.

“Aside from their preoccupation with the multitude of other crises unfolding around the world, many foreign capitals may also have feared contradicting themselves after having expressed support for India’s prerogative to ‘fight terrorism’ following the brutal Pahalgam killings,” the ICG said in a statement.

US Vice President JD Vance on Thursday said that Washington wanted to see a “de-escalation” in a worsening conflict between India and Pakistan, but that it was “fundamentally none of our business”.

But the ICG said that a “combination of bellicose rhetoric, domestic agitation and the remorseless logic of military one-upmanship have heightened the risks of escalation, particularly because for some time there was no diplomatic communication between the sides”.

‘We still have an opportunity for an off-ramp’: India’s former FM

India’s former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has told Al Jazeera that, as he understands, the national security advisers of India and Pakistan “are in touch with each other”.

He said the message being conveyed in news conferences by Indian officials is that “India is committed to peace, but the choice of de-escalation lies with Pakistan. In other words, there is an off-ramp situation here”.

He added, “Even if you look at the Indian air force briefing, there’s a lot of … operational restraint that is being talked about, and the fact that there is definitely a desire to avoid a wider conflict.

“India does believe that its actions have been calibrated, have been precise, have been responsible, and it is not designed in any way to escalate the situation, unless Pakistan, you know, sort of seeks that avenue.

“And if that’s the case, then the Indian response is likely to be firm.”

Uncertainty and fear grips India

There had been relative calm since this morning, but now that has changed, because gunshots and loud explosions have been reported along the Line of Control.

We’re also getting reports of a blackout in Jammu.

There have been fast-moving developments overnight, including India saying it has taken down several Pakistani drones and missiles and also stopped armed men trying to cross into the Indian side.

There have also been a lot of security developments in many cities, including the Indian capital, New Delhi, which is on high alert.

About 20 airports have been shut, and they were to remain shut until the 15th.

The Indian Premier League, a much-loved and highly watched series that has been under way with matches all over the country, will now be suspended for a week.

Blasts and ‘heavy firing’ heard in Indian city of Amritsar

Witnesses have told the Reuters news agency that four blasts have been heard in Amritsar, a city in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, about 30km (19 miles) from the border with Pakistan.

Journalist Ravinder Singh Robin has also reported “heavy firing sounds” in the city.

“Just moments ago, heavy firing sounds heard near Air Force Cantonment around Ajnala Road in Amritsar,” he posted along with a video on X.

As cross-border attacks continue how can we hold on to hope, peace and our humanity?

On the night of May 6, India went to bed. In the morning, we were at war.

When I woke up on Wednesday at about 4:30am to use the bathroom, the glow of my phone screen caught my bleary eye. Still half asleep, I picked it up – only to be jolted awake by headline after headline screaming the same unthinkable message: India had launched a series of strikes into Pakistan, targeting terrorist strongholds.

Read more here.

Jammu resident reports drone attack on the city

Jammu resident Rashul Singh Oberh has told Al Jazeera that a blackout in the city in Indian-administered Kashmir started at about 8pm (14:30 GMT) and a drone attack started about 15 to 30 minutes later.

“I’m at my workplace and can see red light and explosions in the sky,” he said.

Multiple blasts and a blackout reported in Jammu city

Multiple blasts have been heard in Jammu city in Indian-administered Kashmir for a second day, and projectiles have been seen in the night sky after a blackout.

“Intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery, can now be heard from where I am,” the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah said in a post on X.

In an earlier post he said: “Blackout in Jammu now. Sirens can be heard across the city.”

Fast facts: India and Pakistan tensions

In 1947, the British colonial rulers drew a line of partition, dividing the Indian subcontinent into Muslim-majority Pakistan and Hindu-majority India. What followed was one of the largest – and, perhaps, bloodiest – migrations in human history.

Seventy-eight years on, the two nations remain bitter foes. But now they have nuclear arms.

The tension between India and Pakistan has escalated sharply once again after the Pahalgam attack on April 22.

The Muslim-majority Kashmir region, a former princely state, has been in dispute since the partition of India. India, Pakistan and China each control a part of Kashmir. India claims all of it, while Pakistan claims the part administered by India.

The two countries have gone to war four times, and there have been numerous cross-border skirmishes and escalations, including one in 2019 after at least 40 Indian soldiers were killed in a suicide attack claimed by the Pakistan-based armed group, Jaish-e-Muhammad.

In retaliation, India launched air strikes in Balakot, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa later that month, claiming that its jets had struck “terrorist” bases, killing many fighters. Many independent analysts have questioned whether India actually struck bases of armed groups and whether it killed as many fighters as it claims it did.
