Mazzaltov World News provides you with the latest live coverage of Current Affairs, Sports, Health, Weather, Entertainment, Business and Travel News from around the world.

Here’s where things stand on Wednesday 30 July 2025:

Tsunami alerts have been issued after a magnitude 8.7 earthquake off Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.

The quake struck 136km (84 miles) east of the coastal city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Russia’s far east, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said on Tuesday.

Japan’s meteorological agency issued a tsunami advisory for much of its east coast, warning of waves of up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) high.

Tsunami warnings were also issued for Taiwan, Hawaii and Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, with advisories issued for much of the US West Coast.

First tsunami waves hit US west coast

The first tsunami waves were detected in Monterrey, California at 12:48am local time (GMT 05:48), according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.

Monterrey has issued an evacuation order for Monterey Harbour, Breakwater Cove and nearby areas.

Japan Meteorological Agency warns of tsunami threat lasting another day

Masashi Kiyomoto, an official from the Japan Meteorological Agency, has warned that the threat of a high tsunami will last for at least one more day.

According to remarks carried by Japanese public broadcaster NHK, Kiyomoto urged people in coastal areas and along rivers to move to higher ground and other safe places as “tsunami are now continuing to be observed”.

The official also said that a tsunami can continue to be observed over a long period.

He also told people to remain alert as tide levels could be higher than at present if tsunamis occur at high tide.

‘The walls were shaking’

In Russia’s Far Eastern coastal city of Petropavlovsk in the remote Kamchatka Peninsula, residents were woken up by one of the 10 biggest quakes recorded, according to the USGS.

Russian authorities said a tsunami hit and flooded the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, while local media said a wave between three and four metres high was recorded in the Elizovsky district of Kamchatka.

A video posted on Russian social media showed buildings in the town submerged in seawater. Authorities said the population of about 2,000 people was evacuated.

As we reported earlier, several people were injured, but none seriously.

“The walls were shaking,” a Kamchatka resident told state media Zvezda.

“It’s good that we packed a suitcase, there was one with water and clothes near the door. We quickly grabbed it and ran out … It was very scary,” she said.

Why are tsunami waves so powerful?

Japanese tsunami expert Kubota Tatsuya says tsunami waves are much more dangerous than regular waves – even if they do not seem that big initially.

“Unlike regular ocean waves, tsunamis are not just a wave only at the surface, but a movement of the entire water column. Therefore, the tsunami wave has tremendous energy and force, which can cause damage even with relatively small wave heights,” he told Al Jazeera.

“Even if the predicted wave height is not very large, it is essential to stay away from the coast and closely follow the guidance provided by official agencies,” he said.

Kubato also warned that waves may grow in size and intensity over time – as has been observed today in Japan.

“In many cases, multiple waves can arrive over several hours. Even if the first wave is not so large, it is possible that a larger tsunami can arrive [later],” he said.

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-07-30T065854Z_1259140428_RC2UWFAB76DU_RTRMADP_3_RUSSIA-QUAKE-PENINSULA-JAPAN-1753859464.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513&quality=80" alt="Photo taken from a Kyodo News helicopter shows a deserted bathing beach in Shirahama in the western Japan prefecture of Wakayama on July 30, 2025, after the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the country's Pacific coast following a powerful earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, in this photo taken by Kyodo.
Hawaii airports update

The Department of Transportation in Hawaii says all flights to and from Kahului Airport, the main airport in Maui, have been cancelled.

In a social media post, the department said passengers have been sheltering in the terminal.

“In the morning, those sheltering will be re-screened prior to departures,” it added.

Hilo International Airport also remains shut, while baggage screening at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport has resumed, with inter-island and trans-Pacific flights being staggered, if continued.

Evacuations across the Pacific Ocean after earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka

A magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula has triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean.

The tsunami wave inundated coastal areas around Russia’s Far East region, and has prompted evacuations in Japan, Hawaii and other countries.

Warnings have also been issued for the Philippines, Indonesia and as far away as Ecuador.

‘No wave of consequence so far’ in Hawaii: Governor

Hawaii’s Governor Josh Green has just given an update on the situation. Here are key takeaways:

So far, local authorities have not seen a wave of consequence.

Significant water recede several times has been reported in Haleiwa.

No wave activities have been seen coming past the big island.

While there have been no reports of damage, authorities expect to wait up to four hours before being able to assess that the situation is safe: “We are not yet in the clear.”

As of now, there are no plans to shut off any power in advance.

Airports have not been affected, but all flights from and to Maui have been cancelled for tonight.

Next update will come at 9pm (07:00 GMT).

Japan warns tsunami wave cycles last about an hour, show no signs of receding

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the country’s Pacific coast has already been hit by four to five rounds of tsunami waves, and has warned residents of the following:

There are no signs of tsunami waves receding.

The height of waves continues to grow, from 20cm (0.6ft) earlier today to 1.3 metres (4.2ft) in the northeast of the country.

Long gaps may be observed between rounds of waves.

Each wave cycle can take about an hour, but waves could continue for an extended period.

There is also a chance of powerful and unexpected surges.

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2025-07-30T025941Z_132877411_RC2QWFAJUP0M_RTRMADP_3_RUSSIA-QUAKE-PENINSULA-JAPAN-1753858091.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C428&quality=80" alt="People look on after being evacuated to a temporary tsunami evacuation site, after Japan issued evacuation alert following major quake in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula that triggered a tsunami warning, in Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan July 30, 2025, in this photo taken by Kyodo.
Hawaii governor warns even small tsunami waves driven with ‘great force’

Hawaii’s Governor Josh Green has said it is too early to tell how big the tsunami waves reaching Hawaii will be.

Green said at a news conference that data from Midway Atoll, which is between Japan and Hawaii, measured waves from peak to trough of 6ft (1.8 metres), and said waves hitting Hawaii could be bigger or smaller than this.

A tsunami of that size would be akin to a 3ft (90cm) wave riding on top of surf, he said.

“This is a longitudinal wave with great force driving through the shoreline and into land,” he added.

Green said Black Hawk helicopters have been activated and high-water vehicles were ready to go in case authorities need to rescue people. “But please do not put yourself in harm’s way,” he said.

Vacationers stand on balconies at the Alohilani Resort looking towards Waikiki Beach amid tsunami alerts in Honolulu, Hawaii, US on Tuesday

Japan prepared to ‘bear the brunt of any tsunamis’

Given its proximity [to the epicentre of the earthquake], the country that will bear the brunt of any tsunamis is Japan.

In 1952, there was another big earthquake in Kamchatka. That resulted in tsunamis that impacted and caused damage in Japan.

So, the most widespread alerts have been raised there, especially around the coastal areas of the northern island of Hokkaido and the Pacific coastal areas of the main Honshu island.

People have been told to evacuate coastal areas, stay away from the mouths of rivers and harbours, seek refuge at higher ground or the highest floors of sturdy buildings.

Because Japan is so prone to tsunami waves and earthquakes, they do prepare for these kinds of natural disasters. The harbours have sea defences which can be raised to try to block incoming waves. People practice evacuations. There is a very elaborate warning system in place.

More on tsunami waves in Russia

The fourth wave of the tsunami has reached the town of Severo-Kurilsk in Russia’s Sakhalin region, but it was already weak, according to the mayor of the Severo-Kurilsk region, Alexander Ovsyannikov, who spoke to the Interfax news agency.

“The most serious was the third wave, which did a lot of damage. It damaged the port infrastructure; the entire small fleet was pulled out to sea, it is now hanging around in the strait, some of the ships were washed ashore,” he said.

The tsunami alert remains. But in Severo-Kurilsk, it applies to the port area. The city itself is located on a hill in a safe place, the mayor added.

There were no casualties. It was previously reported that after a powerful earthquake near Kamchatka, a tsunami alert was declared in Severo-Kurilsk and everyone was evacuated from the tsunami-hazardous zone.

A state of emergency has been declared in the city due to the consequences of the earthquake and tsunami.

Tsunami waves flood an area after a powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, in Severo-Kurilsk, Sakhalin Region, Russia, July 30, 2025 [

First tsunami waves reach Hawaii

Tsunami waves appear to be reaching Hawaii as water levels rose suddenly around Kahulai, Nawiliwili, Honolulu, and Pearl Harbour, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Tsunami warning sirens activated in Tonga’s capital Nuku’alofa: Report

Tsunami evacuation sirens have been activated on the South Pacific island of Tonga and alerts are in force across the island-chain kingdom, local news outlet Matangi Tonga Online reports.

According to the news outlet, Tonga’s meteorological service estimates that Tonga’s northern coastlines of Niua and Vava’u will be under tsunami threat from about 10-11pm tonight (09:00-10:00 GMT).

Other coastlines will also be threatened, the news site said.

Tonga’s National Tsunami Warning Centre warned that members of the “public who are in the tsunami threat area are advised to prepare to evacuate”.

“Mariners out at sea are advised to prepare to move to deep water,” it added.

Klyuchevskoy volcano ejects 3km ash column in Russia’s Kamchatka

The Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka has ejected ash to a height of up to 3 km (1.8 miles) above sea level, according to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“By now, the ash plume has extended 58km [36 miles] east of the volcano. The volcano is continuing to erupt explosively at the summit. Ash emissions at altitudes up to 8km [4.9 miles] above sea level may occur at any time. Continued activity may affect low-flying aircraft,” the statement said, according to the Interfax news agency.

“The crater is almost filled with lava, we are expecting lava flows,” KVERT reported.

KVERT has assigned an orange colour code for aviation hazards to this volcano. International air traffic routes do not pass through the Klyuchevskoy area.

Japan reports tsunami waves along Pacific Coast

The whole Pacific coast of Japan is now reporting tsunami waves, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK World.

Waves are now as high as 60cm (1.9ft) along some parts of the coast, including Kuji Port and Hamanaka town, according to NHK.

The size of the waves has grown steadily from 20cm (0.6ft) earlier this morning, and authorities say they could reach as high as 3 metres (9.8ft).

Tsunami warning advisories will be in place across Japan for at least the next 24 hours, the broadcaster said.

The National Weather Service urges California residents to take caution

The National Weather Service’s San Francisco Bay office said a tsunami advisory is in place for the entire California coast and people should “stay away from” waterways and beaches.

Where have tsunami alerts been issued around the world?

Tsunami warnings or advisories have been issued for:

Russia

Japan

Taiwan

The Philippines

China

Washington

British Columbia

Mexico

Peru

Ecuador

Taiwan warns waves will hit south coast

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration has warned that the island’s south coast could experience waves of 30cm to 1 metre (0.9 to 3.2ft) at about 1:30pm local time (05:30 GMT).

Other parts of Taiwan will experience waves of less than 1 metre, the agency said.

Taiwan lies to the southwest of Japan, close to Okinawa and other outlying islands.

Russia declares emergency on tsunami-hit islands

Authorities in Russia’s far eastern Sakhalin region have declared a state of emergency in the northern Kuril Islands, where tsunami waves have damaged buildings and caused flooding.

“A state of emergency has been declared in the North Kuril District, where an earthquake and tsunami occurred today,” the Sakhalin government said in a statement.

<img decoding="async" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/AP25211133427846-1753850003.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513&quality=80" alt="This image taken from a video released by Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, shows the aftermath of tsunami hitting the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk at Paramushir island of Kuril Islands, Russia, Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
Ships washed away in far-eastern Russian port town

As we reported earlier, tsunami waves have inundated the far-eastern Russian port town of Severo-Kurilsk in the Kuril Islands.

Russia’s TASS news agency is reporting that while the first wave to flood the town passed without incident, a third powerful wave tore ships from their places, carrying them out to sea.

The port and fishing facilities were flooded, according to the Russian Emergency Ministry.

As we reported earlier, the town’s 2,000 residents had evacuated to higher ground.

A powerful wave washes past a building located near the shore in Severo-Kurilsk, Sakhalin Region, Russia on Wednesday

Earthquake occurred in Pacific Ring of Fire

Chris Elders, a structural geology expert at Curtin University in Australia, told Al Jazeera that Wednesday’s earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is an “area of significant volcanic activity and also earthquake activity”.

“In this particular part of the Pacific Ocean, the Pacific Ocean is moving down underneath the eastern side of Russia… and it’s that movement of the tectonic plates that produces these very large earthquakes,” Elders said.

“The earthquake causes the seabed to lift up a little bit, and that displaces the water sideways, producing the tsunami wave, and it’ll spread away from the epicentre,” he said.

Tsunamis can move at speed of commercial plane: Expert

Nathan Bangs, a research professor at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, told Al Jazeera that today’s earthquake resembled those behind recent disasters.

“Preliminary estimates are 8.8 [magnitude] and occurred along Kamchatka. This is a subduction zone setting that has the potential to generate large tsunamis. It is similar to other settings that have generated large tsunamis in recent years that followed earthquakes, such as Sumatra in 2004 and Tohoku in 2011,” Bangs said.

An earthquake in 2004 unleashed the devastating Boxing Day tsunami in the Indian Ocean, while the 2011 earthquake in Japan was the most powerful ever recorded in the country, and also generated a deadly tsunami.

Bangs said it is still too soon to understand the extent of the damage from the latest seismic event, but tsunami waves can move as fast as a commercial aeroplane.

“Tsunamis travel about the speed of an airliner and may not have yet reached potential danger zones in Hawaii or the US West Coast. If this event did generate a large tsunami, the impact of a tsunami may still occur around the Pacific,” Bangs added.

San Francisco residents warned against taking tsunami photos

Seismologist says earthquake and tsunami resemble 1952 event

University of Tokyo seismologist Sakai Shinichi told Al Jazeera that today’s earthquake and tsunami resemble a historic incident from 1952.

The powerful 1952 Severo-Kurilsk earthquake also struck off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s far east, causing extensive damage and a tsunami.

“We will have to wait for reports from Russia to determine the extent of the damage on the Kamchatka Peninsula. Tsunamis of [20-50] centimetres [0.6-1.6 ft] have been observed in Japan, but information is still insufficient, so the number may increase in the future,” Sakai said.

“In the past, large earthquakes have occurred off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Kuril Islands, and the resulting tsunamis have reached Japan, causing widespread damage. For example, the 1952 earthquake,” he said.

Tsunami expert Philip Liu shared more analysis of potential tsunami damage with Al Jazeera a little earlier.

Liu said that given the direction of the tsunami, Japan is less at risk than other parts of the Pacific.

He said that tsunami wave heights are also smaller than originally estimated.

“Tsunamis tend to propagate in the direction normal to the long axis of the fault plane. Therefore, in this event, the major direction of tsunami propagation is towards the centre of the Pacific Ocean,” he said by email.

The Kuril-Kamchatka arc has frequent moderate-to-large earthquakes, the USGS said, with 31 other earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.5 or higher recorded within 250km (155 miles) of Wednesday’s earthquake in the past 100 years.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake recorded there on July 20, 2025, would now be considered a foreshock to this morning’s earthquake, the USGS said.

The epicentre of the latest earthquake was 45km (28 miles) southeast of the November 4, 1952, magnitude 9.0 Kamchatka earthquake epicentre.

The 1952 earthquake caused a Pacific-wide tsunami, but no deaths were reported despite it setting off 9.1-metre (30-foot) waves in Hawaii.

Taiwan issues tsunami warning

Taiwan, which lies directly to the southwest of Japan, has now also issued a tsunami warning.

Waves are expected to hit Japan’s north first, and then its southernmost islands at about 2pm local time (05:00 GMT), according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, which means they would hit Taiwan shortly afterwards.

The current advisory for Japan says waves will be about 1 metre high (3.3 ft) at that point, although this could change.

Hawaii on tsunami watch

Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency says that if tsunami waves affect the islands, they are estimated to reach them by 7:17pm local time on Tuesday (06:00 GMT, Wednesday).

There were no injuries reported after the strongest earthquake “in decades” off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula earlier today, but evacuation was ordered for a small town in the Sakhalin region after a tsunami warning, regional governors said.

“Today’s earthquake was serious, and the strongest in decades of tremors,” Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said in a video posted on the Telegram messaging app.

He said that according to preliminary information, there were no injuries, but a kindergarten was damaged.

Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko said on Telegram that an evacuation order was declared for the small town of Severo-Kurilsk after a tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.

Japan issues tsunami advisory for east coast

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning for much of its east coast along the Pacific.

People have been warned to stay away from beaches, where waves of up to 3 metres are expected to start from 10 am local time (1:00 GMT) in the north of Hokkaido and gradually move south.

The JMA says they will announce further details at a press conference at 10:10 am (1:10 GMT).

The quake struck 136km (85 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Russia’s far east, the US Geological Survey said.

Japan’s meteorological agency issued a tsunami advisory for the country, warning of waves of up to 1 metre (3.3 feet) high.

Japan has deployed more than 2,000 firefighters to battle the country’s biggest forest fire in three decades.

At least one person has died in the blaze, which has torched more than 5,200 acres around the northern Japanese city of Ofunato since Thursday, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA).

Although January to March is typically Ofunato’s driest season, the area saw less rainfall last month than any February in more than 20 years – recording just 2.5 millimetres, compared to the usual average of 41.

About 4,600 people remain under government-issued evacuation orders as the fire continues to burn.

Some 2,000 have already left the area to stay with friends or relatives, and more than 1,200 have evacuated to shelters, officials said.

The fires are burning in a forest area of Iwate Prefecture, which is Japan’s second largest prefecture and has the country’s second-lowest population density.

More than 80 buildings are estimated to have been damaged so far, although FDMA noted that details are still being assessed.

“Although it is inevitable that the fire will spread to some extent, we will take all possible measures to ensure there will be no impact on people’s homes,” Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said in parliament.

Thousands of firefighters from 14 prefectures, including Tokyo, have been dispatched to fight the fires. At least 16 helicopters are also being used, with images showing the aircraft dumping water onto the smouldering hills.

Like many other countries, Japan in 2024 recorded its hottest year since records began.

It is difficult to know if climate change has caused or worsened specific fires, because other factors – such as changes to the way land is used – are also relevant.

However, the IPCC says climate change is making the weather conditions needed for wildfires to spread more likely.

A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the attempted murder of Japan’s former prime minister Fumio Kishida in 2023.

Ryuji Kimura, 25, hurled a pipe bomb at Kishida as the country’s leader approached a crowd for a speech during an election event in the city of Wakayama.

Although Kishida was unharmed, the explosion of the homemade device caused minor injuries to a police officer and a member of the public.

The attack shocked Japan as it came less than a year after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead at an outdoor election campaign event.

Kimura, who was sentenced on Wednesday, claimed during questioning his intention was not to kill Kishida, but to object to the country’s election age regulation which prevented him from getting into politics.

The minimum age to become a member of parliament in Japan is 25 for the House of Representatives and 30 for the House of Councillors.

Kimura further added that he threw the bomb to bring attention to a civil lawsuit he filed in 2022, claiming the age restriction was unconstitutional, which was dismissed.

Kimura’s defence argued he should not face a charge of attempted murder, as he did not expect the bomb to cause injuries, and that a three-year prison sentence would be reasonable given the extent of those injuries.

The court stated, however, that the explosives were powerful enough to cause fatal damage.

When handing down the ruling, presiding judge Keiko Fukushima noted that “targeting a serving prime minister caused significant anxiety to society as a whole.”

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Kimura was also found guilty of violating explosives regulations and firearms control laws.

His 10-year sentence is five years less than what prosecutors had sought.

While violent attacks are extremely rare in Japan, anxiety around politicians’ security has surged in the wake of Abe’s assassination in 2022.

The attempted attack on Kishida, which came less than a year later, raised questions as to why there was not a tighter security presence around the country’s leader at that time.

Japan says it will increase its reliance on nuclear energy in a major policy shift as it seeks to meet growing demand from power-hungry sectors like AI and semiconductors.

An energy plan approved by the cabinet on Tuesday called for “maximising the use of nuclear energy” and dropped reference to “reducing reliance on nuclear energy”.

The energy plan, written by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry says that by 2040, nuclear energy should account for 20% of Japan’s grid supply in 2040, more than double the 8.5% share in 2023.

It comes as the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster from 14 years ago continues to hang over the country, conjuring painful memories.

In March 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake near Japan’s north-east coast spawned a tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people, wiping out entire towns and flooding the reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Japan now operates 14 commercial nuclear reactors, compared to 54 before the Fukushima disaster when 30% of the country’s energy was from nuclear sources.

The plan still needs approval by parliament, where it will be discussed in the coming months.

The country, which imports 90% of its fuel, needs to look to nuclear sources as part of its plan to cut back on carbon and be self-reliant on energy, said Daishiro Yamagiwa, an MP who was part of a government advisory committee on the energy plan.

“Because of the conflict in Ukraine and the war in the Middle East, even fossil fuels have become difficult to buy,” he told the BBC. “Japan is a country without energy resources, so we must use whatever is available in a balanced way.”

Yamagiwa added that energy burdens are growing because of demand from AI data processing centres and semiconductor factories around the country.

But experts say increasing reliance on nuclear energy will be both risky and costly.

Japan will need to import uranium, which is expensive and will make the country reliant on other countries, said Professor Kenichi Oshima at the faculty of policy science at Ryukoku University.

Prof Oshima told the BBC the main concern is that increasing the number of nuclear power plants also raises the risk of potentially disastrous accidents.

He cited the 2024 New Year’s Day earthquake in the Noto peninsula, where two decades ago, a plan to build a nuclear plant was scrapped because locals opposed it.

“If there had been a nuclear power plant there, it is quite clear that it would have caused a major accident,” he said.

In Japan, any mention of nuclear energy inevitably brings back difficult memories of the nuclear meltdown at the Daiichi power plant.

“We all had such a terrible experience at the time of the Fukushima quake,” Tokyo resident Yuko Maruyama told the BBC.

“How could I support it [the nuclear energy plan]? I want the government to rely on other sources of energy,” she added.

“As a mother I think of the children, of their safety. I cannot help but think about what would happen in the future.”

The meltdown at Fukushima is considered the world’s worst since that of Chernobyl in 1986.

It stirred fresh controversy in 2023, when Japan started releasing treated water from the site of the Fukushima plant. This drew protests from Japan’s neighbours, including China, over safety concerns.

The United Nations atomic energy regulator IAEA said the waste water was safe and would have a “negligible” impact on people and the environment.

In response to the new energy plan announced this week, Greenpeace said promoting nuclear energy is “outrageous” when the fallout from Fukushima is still ongoing.

“There is no justification for continuing to rely on nuclear energy, which remains toxic for tens of thousands of years, produces radioactive waste that requires long-term management, and carries risks like earthquakes and terrorism,” the group said.

To meet the government’s goal, experts say 33 reactors must be put back online, but the current pace of safety checks as well as residents’ objections in some areas will make this difficult.

Many of these nuclear plants are old and will need to be refitted with new technology for them to function safely.

“That most difficult problem is that each nuclear power plant is in a different location and will need its own safety protocol and infrastructure,” Yamagiwa said.

“We must check each of them carefully. It still takes time.”

In recent months, regulators have given several old reactors approval to keep operating.

In October 2024 Japan’s oldest reactor, Takahama nuclear power plant, was given the go-ahead to continue operations, making it the first reactor in the country to get approval to operate beyond 50 years.

A woman in Japan has been arrested for allegedly squashing a bun at a convenience store and leaving without buying the packet of bread.

Authorities in the southern city of Fukuoka confirmed to the BBC that the 40-year-old had been arrested on Monday for “criminal damage”.

The woman, who said she was unemployed, claimed she “only checked the firmness of [the bun] by pressing lightly with my hand”, according to police.

The woman had allegedly touched a bag of four black sesame and cream cheese buns. While the bag’s wrapper was intact, police said one of the buns was damaged after she pressed it with her right thumb, and the entire bag could not be sold.

Police said the owner of the Lawson convenience store had claimed he had seen the woman squashing buns several times in the past.

As the woman was leaving the shop on Monday, the owner noticed the bun was damaged and he urged her to pay for the bread, according to police. The bag of buns cost about 180 yen (£0.95; $1.20).

She allegedly refused. After following her for 1km (0.6mi), the manager restrained her. The police were called to the scene and they arrested her.

In recent years, police have been also cracking down on pranksters who have committed “sushi terrorism” in sushi conveyor belt restaurants, such as licking communal soy sauce bottles and squashing sushi meant for diners.

João da Silva & Annabelle Liang

Business reporters, BBC NewsShareSave

Merger talks between Honda and Nissan have collapsed after the firms failed to agree on a multi-billion-dollar tie-up.

The Japanese carmakers, along with junior partner Mitsubishi, had aimed to combine their businesses to fight back against competition from rival firms, especially in China.

The merger would have created an auto group worth $60bn (£48bn), and the world’s fourth-largest by vehicle sales after Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai.

The companies said they would continue their partnership on electric vehicles.

https://d2413915452ff50b7d92c1eb1a8cd20f.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-41/html/container.html

Karl Brauer, an analyst from online research platform iSeeCars.com, said the failure of the merger was not a total surprise.

“Plenty of automotive mergers have not worked out, and this one had as much potential for disaster as it did to help both brands,” he added.

The planned tie-up was seen as providing Nissan, which for a while was Japan’s second-largest car company, with crucial relief following years of slowing sales and turmoil involving its top executives.

Honda entered negotiations in a leading position. It remains a popular brand globally, producing and selling more cars than Nissan.

Nissan, meanwhile, has struggled to recover from a leadership crisis since the arrest of former chief executive and chairman Carlos Ghosn in late 2018.

Mr Ghosn was dismissed from his post over allegations of financial misconduct, which he denies, and has lived as a fugitive in his home country of Lebanon after being smuggled out of Japan in a music equipment box.

Nissan announced cost-cutting measures last year, including shedding 9,000 jobs globally, and halving its current chief executive’s pay.

Honda’s boss Toshihiro Mibe had said any merger would be “based on the assumption that Nissan completes its turnaround action”.

The companies eventually disagreed on what role Nissan would play in the merger – equal partner or subsidiary.

Jesper Koll, from Japanese online trading platform operator Monex Group, said the “pressure to make it appear like a merger of equals in Japan is very strong”.

“Having somebody leading this would seem almost offensive to the other party.”

Mr Koll also said Honda could have come off worse, adding: “You’re taking a potentially great company and taxing it with having to bail out an ugly duckling.”

More on this story

Both Nissan and Honda are also facing the prospect of tariffs in the United States, another major market.

The growing electric car market has been increasingly dominated by Chinese manufacturers, such as BYD.

This increased competition has left many of the world’s leading carmakers struggling to compete.

In March last year, months before they announced the merger plans, Nissan and Honda had agreed to explore a strategic partnership for electric vehicles.

“The talks started because we believe that we must build up capabilities to fight them, including the current emerging forces, by 2030,” Honda’s chief executive Toshihiro Mibe said, in reference to the Chinese competition. “Otherwise we will be beaten.”

What comes next?

Without the possibility of a Honda merger to ease its troubles, Nissan continues to face an uncertain road ahead.

A possible powerful investor has already emerged, however, with Taiwan’s Foxconn, which produces most of the world’s advanced computer chips, saying it will consider buying Nissan shares for “co-operation”.

Foxconn chairman Young Liu said the firm was interested in collaborating with Renault, the French car giant that has a 36% stake in Nissan after rescuing it from the brink of bankruptcy in 1999.

Renault chimed in on the Honda-Nissan fallout on Thursday, calling the terms of the proposed deal “unacceptable”.

Any future deal for Nissan, according to the analyst Karl Brauer, will need to rely on leadership “that can identify and execute synergies across both companies, as well as manage the political and cultural challenges”.

A truck cabin that was swallowed by a sinkhole in Japan two weeks ago has been located in a nearby sewer pipe, authorities say.

Drone images suggest that a human body is inside the cabin, but it is unclear if it is that of the truck’s missing 74-year-old driver.

The sinkhole, which now measures 40m (131ft) in diameter, opened at a road intersection in Yashio city near Tokyo. It is believed to be caused by a sewer rupture.

Search teams are unable to enter the 5m-wide pipe due to continuous water flow and high levels of hydrogen sulfide or sewer gas, officials said.

They will need to install a temporary bypass pipe to stop the water flow and access the truck. That process could take three months,Saitama Governor Motohiro Ono said.

While rescuers were able to pull the truck’s loading platform from the sinkhole, they were unable to reach the cabin which had the driver.

The driver was able to communicate with rescuers shortly after he fell into the sinkhole on 28 January, but contact was lost as the truck was buried deeper in soil and debris.

On Sunday, authorities moved their search from the sinkhole to the nearby sewer pipe, where part of a driver’s seat was found.

The sinkhole initially measured 10m wide and 5m deep, but it has since quadrupled in size after it merged with another sinkhole nearby.

As the crater continues to erode, authorities have asked nearby residents to evacuate their homes, fearing further cave-ins.

Officials have also asked 1.2 million residents in Saitama prefecture to reduce their water usage, including cutting back on showers and laundry, to limit the water flowing in the underground pipes.

The water flow and further road collapses have hampered the search operation, which was suspended more than once out of safety concerns.

Sinkholes are increasingly common in Japanese cities, as many have ageing sewage pipeline infrastructure.

Officials say that it could take two or three years to repair the sewer rupture.

A Japanese finance ministry employee on a night out with colleagues lost documents containing the personal data of 187 people suspected of drug smuggling, local media say.

The employee, who has not been named, reportedly drank nine glasses of beer during a five-hour-long night out with co-workers in Yokohama on 6 February.

Local media said that he did not realise he had lost his bag until after he got off his train ride home in another city, Sumida.

The finance ministry has said it was “deeply sorry” for the incident that “significantly undermined public trust”, according to public broadcaster NHK.

The bag had contained documents which had the names and addresses of 187 suspected drug smugglers and recipients of marijuana seeds, the ministry said.

It had also contained business laptops with the employee’s personal data.

The employee, who is assigned to the customs and tariff bureau, was not named in the NHK report.

The BBC has reached out to the finance ministry for comment on Tuesday, a public holiday in Japan.

Alcohol has long been seen as a social lubricant for thousands of years in Japan, where business deals and difficult issues are discussed over bottles of beer and sake.

It is believed that drinking alcohol creates a more relaxed environment for such discussions.

If Japan needed reassurances it was indeed still the US’s top ally and friend in the increasingly unstable Asia-Pacific, it got that and then some.

But what was striking about the Trump-Ishiba meeting at the White House was what didn’t happen.

Unlike most of the Trump domestic and global dynamics so far, this was neither controversial nor confrontational.

“On television, he is very frightening,” Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told reporters after Friday’s meeting.

“But when I met him, he was very sincere, very powerful and strong willed,” he added.

There’s a lot that ties Washington and Tokyo. Japan has been the top foreign investor in the US for five consecutive years, creating thousands of jobs. And there are 54,000 US military personnel stationed in Japan.

But President Donald Trump has given his friends and foes a lot to worry about: from tariff wars against China, Canada and Mexico to his US “ownership” of Gaza proposal and his sanctions against the International Criminal Court.

What are tariffs and why is Trump threatening to use them?

How Japan sparked Trump’s 40-year love affair with tariffs

“Trump has made some erratic decisions towards countries that believed themselves to be America’s friends,” said Jeffrey Hall, lecturer at Japan’s Kanda University of International Studies.

“There was a fear in Tokyo that the same might happen: that Trump might slap huge tariffs on Japan or start some dispute. But that didn’t happen,” he added.

https://00ccd980ceda29cec0a7d7468022b1a1.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-41/html/container.html

Trump ‘study sessions’

While Trump didn’t rule out tariffs against Tokyo, it wasn’t the main feature of this meeting.

Ishiba went to Washington prepared. He’d studied. Literally. he held “study sessions” with staff and sought advice from his predecessor, Fumio Kishida.

He also had some help from the widow of the late former PM Shinzo Abe, who had a close relationship with Trump during his first presidency, forged on the golf course.

Ishiba’s homework paid off.

Apart from when Trump mistakenly referred to Nippon Steel as “Nissan”, there weren’t many eye-raising moment like the many other announcements by the US president.

In fact – as far as Japan is concerned – this meeting was reassuring.

Japan has been the top foreign investor in the US for five years running

https://00ccd980ceda29cec0a7d7468022b1a1.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-41/html/container.html

Both leaders seemed to have met eye-to-eye on their countries’ plans to boost trade and defence ushering in a “golden-era” of Japan-US relations.

Ishiba announced his country’s plans to increase investment in the US to $1tn (£806bn), as the two economic powers rebalance trade relations.

Ishiba said Japanese car makers would boost investment, while Tokyo would expand imports of US liquified natural gas (LNG).

This would have been music to Trump’s ears and a boost to his “drill, baby, drill” announcement from his inauguration speech.

The two men also managed to find common ground on the controversial issue of Nippon Steel.

Trump said Nippon would “invest heavily” in the Pennsylvania-based US Steel without taking a majority stake.

The Japanese firm’s attempted takeover of US Steel had been previously blocked by President Joe Biden on national security grounds.

Keeping talks simple

There were enough boxes ticked for Japan to breathe easy – but the main purpose of Ishiba’s visit was personal.

The Japanese PM has been in a fraught political position at home – with his minority government keeping a weak grip on power after it was humiliated in October’s general elections when they lost their ruling majority.

Ishiba was desperate for a win.

The man himself has not elicited much confidence in how he would fare opposite a notorious Trump.

“For weeks local media played up the idea that he would not succeed diplomatically – that he was clumsy, not a sociable person and that Trump would eat his lunch, if he made it to Washington,” said Mr Hall.

But Ishiba is walking away with what looks a lot like success.

The former Japanese defence minister is a veteran politician known for dense speeches in parliament. Observers have said such speeches manage to confuse some of his opponents and bore others.

But in a “Trump strategy meeting” with his staff, the biggest piece of advice he reportedly got was: “Conclusion first. Keep it simple.”

“Ishiba followed a play book to flatter Trump personally and offer him economic investments in the US instead of confronting him”, said Mr Hall.

https://00ccd980ceda29cec0a7d7468022b1a1.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-41/html/container.html

Avoiding confrontation

There are several issues that Japan and the US could disagree on. Not least Trump’s proposal of a US takeover of the Gaza Strip, which sparked fierce criticism around the world.

Japan reiterated its long-standing position of supporting a two-state solution.

“We won’t change our stance,” said Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya last week.

Tokyo is also watching Trump’s trade war with China nervously.

But Hall said Japan would not be drawn into the US-China trade war if it could help it.

When it comes to China, Japan needs to strike a fine balance.

Beijing is Tokyo’s largest trading partner. China is one of the largest investment destinations for Japanese companies.

On the defence and diplomatic front both the US and Japan are challenged by China’s rising influence and assertiveness in the region and globally.

Not least with Chinese military’s now frequent and provocative moves in waters near Taiwan which Beijing sees as a renegade province.

In 2022, Japan, a pacifist nation, announced it would double its military spending by 2027, citing threats posed by China and North Korea, and saying it would acquire the ability to strike enemy bases.

The changes marked the most dramatic overhaul to Japan’s security strategy since it adopted a pacifist constitution after World War Two.

With North Korea continuing its nuclear program, South Korea in political meltdown, and the ongoing US-China rivalry, Japan has yet again presented itself as America’s least challenging and only unproblematic friend in the region.

“Japan will avoid any conformation with Trump when possible. It will most likely become a ‘yes’ friend,” said Hall.

President Donald Trump has said Japan’s Nippon Steel will drop its $14.9bn (£12bn) bid to acquire US Steel.

Speaking alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the White House, Trump said Nippon would instead “invest heavily” in the company without taking a majority stake.

The Japanese firm’s attempted takeover of Pennsylvania-based US Steel was previously blocked by President Joe Biden on national security grounds.

Union members and Trump had repeatedly criticised such a merger, which would have created one of the biggest steel companies in the world.

No details of the agreement were shared at Friday’s bilateral, and Nippon has long stressed its plans to invest in the company.

Trump – who mistakenly referred to the firm as “Nissan” – said he would meet Nippon’s head next week to “mediate and arbitrate” the deal.

Facing political pressure, the Biden administration blocked the purchase on the grounds that domestic ownership was important.

The Japanese government had called Biden’s decision “incomprehensible” and both Nippon and US Steel ultimately filed a lawsuit.

More recently, Nippon has argued that the purchase would be “in line” with Trump’s focus on manufacturing, job creation and promoting investment in the US.

Prime Minister Ishiba was in Washington to cement ties with the country’s primary foreign partner.

Both US and Japanese officials said the main purpose of the visit, however, was to forge a personal relationship with Trump – who had a warm relationship with former premier Shinzo Abe during his first term.

The visit marks the first by an Asian leader to the White House since Trump’s second administration began in January.

It is the second by a foreign leader during the new administration, following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trip earlier this week.

“On television, he is very frightening,” Ishiba told reporters of Trump at Friday’s joint news conference.

“But when I met with him, he was very sincere. And very powerful. And of very strong will.”

During Trump’s first term from 2017-21, he grew close to Shinzo Abe, bonding over golf. Abe resigned in 2020 and was assassinated two years later.

Japanese officials said Ishiba made “every possible preparation” for his meeting with Trump, including seeking advice from Abe’s widow – who attended the inauguration as a guest of Melania Trump – and from his predecessor, Fumio Kishida.

Ishiba also underscored Japan’s role as a major economic partner for the US, and highlighted that Japan has been the top foreign investor in the US for five consecutive years.

Among multinational firms, Japanese companies are the largest job creators in 10 states and the second largest in another six.

In Kentucky alone, Japanese companies employ more than 45,000 people, primarily in auto equipment manufacturing.

Earlier in the day, Trump said that while tariffs against Japan could still be possible, he believes the $68bn US trade deficit with Japan can be addressed and would be “very easy” for Japan.

“We have a fantastic relationship,” he said. I don’t think we’ll have any problem. They want fairness also.”

Asked about the possibility of US tariffs – and counter-tariffs – Ishiba declined to provide details.

“I am unable to respond to a theoretical question,” he said, eliciting laughs from Trump and journalists in the room. “That’s the official answer we have.”
