Six people, including a mother and her daughter, who were killed in a small plane crash in Philadelphia have been identified by the company operating the medical transport jet.

A seventh victim, who was not named, was on the ground at the time of the crash.

Philadelphia mayor Cherelle Parker announced on Sunday that the injury count had gone up to 22, with five people still in hospital and three of those in critical condition.

The cause of the crash is not yet known, but investigators recovered the aircraft’s black box on Sunday, the National Transport Safety Board said in a statement obtained by CBS News.

A spokesman for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance disclosed the identity of victims to CBS. All were Mexican citizens, including the child onboard who was traveling to receive medical treatment.

The spokesman identified the victims as Captain Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, co-pilot Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Doctor Raul Meza Arredondo, Rodrigo Lopez Padilla, Valentina Guzman Murillo, and Lizeth Murillo Ozuna.

The crash on Friday happened just blocks from the Roosevelt Mall, a three-storey shopping centre in a densely populated part of Philadelphia, the fifth biggest city in the US.

The area is filled with terraced housing and shops. Many properties lost power after the crash.

Authorities were still assessing the extent of the damage to the residential area.

While they were not sure how many individuals had been displaced, city officials confirmed that 11 properties sustained significant damage.

A shelter set up at local high school had an average of six people per night, or fewer, officials said. Several businesses had also been affected.

Some streets around the crash site remain closed, but Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said that some lanes could open to traffic on Monday.

The deadly crash is being investigated by the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration with assistance from other local agencies.

NTSB officials say preliminary investigations revealed that the flight climbed to about 1,500 feet before going into a steep descent and making a high impact crash.

The entire flight was less than one minute, they said.

Investigators have found two engines, but the aircraft’s black box has not been located.

Mayor Parker said investigators were “poring over every bit of material that has been available”.

Residents are being asked to report any debris they find in the area.

A small medical transport plane crashed into several buildings in north-east Philadelphia on Friday evening, killing all six people on board and injuring people on the ground.

The plane had been on a medical transport mission, carrying a child patient and her mother, and four crew members.

Flight logs show the plane was in the air “for only a minute” before it crashed, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said in a statement.

Videos of the incident online show the plane coming down quickly and sparking a huge fireball.

All six people on board were Mexican, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on X. The plane was travelling to Springfield, Missouri.

“Many people on the ground – in parking lots, on streets, in cars and homes in the area – were injured,” Parker said, but “the number of injured is yet to be released.”

A spokesperson for Temple University Hospital-Jeanes in Philadelphia said it had treated six people who were injured on the ground during the crash.

Three were treated and released, while details are not yet known about the condition of the other three.

The plane left Northeast Philadelphia Airport at about 18:07 local time and crashed less than four miles (6.4km) away moments later, the BBC’s US partner CBS reported.

The first emergency calls went out at about 18:12, it added.

In a statement, Jared Solomon, a state representative for Northeast Philadelphia, said: “In a time of profound tragedy, I was inspired to witness hundreds of our first responders sprinting towards danger to ensure the safety of our neighborhood.”

Witnesses described shrapnel from the crash damaging cars and sending burning debris into the streets. Photos of the aftermath show burning cars mangled.

The crash happened just blocks from the Roosevelt Mall, a three-storey shopping center in a densely populated part of Philadelphia, the fifth biggest city in the US.

The area is filled with terraced housing and shops.

Fire officials said multiple homes caught fire in the area of Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard, CBS reported.

One man who spoke with CBS said he was driving in the area when he heard a whirring sound and then a loud explosion.

“Everyone just started screaming,” he said.

Another witness told local media the explosion “lit up the whole sky”.

“I just saw a plane basically hit the building and it exploded. The sky lit up and I pulled over and basically, it was just real bad around here,” the witness told WPVI-TV, describing the crash as feeling like an earthquake.

Ryan Tian, 23, told The Philadelphia Inquirer he was getting dinner when he saw a “massive fireball” that turned the sky orange. “I thought we were getting attacked by something,” he said.

The girl on the plane, from Tijuana, Mexico, had received treatment at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia, according to hospital spokesperson Mel Bower, CBS reports.

Mr Bower said her treatment had ended and she was on her way home, and that there had been “a send-off” at the hospital for her earlier on Friday.

He added that two doctors on the plane were from the Jet Air Rescue Air Ambulance.

The Mexican foreign ministry said personnel at the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia were in contact with relatives of those who were on the flight.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said city officials do not know the number of fatalities, but the city is “asking for prayers for anyone and everyone that may have been affected”.

“If you see debris, call 911, don’t touch anything,” she told city residents.

Pennsylvania Gov Josh Shapiro called it an “awful aviation disaster” during a news conference at the scene of the crash.

What do we know about the crash?

According to data on FlightAware, a flight tracking website, the plane was operated by a company called Med Jets, and had arrived in Philadelphia from Florida less than four hours earlier.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating.

In a statement, President Donald Trump said his administration was “totally engaged”.

“So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls lost,” he said.

It was the deadliest plane crash in the US in over 20 years.

A small medical transport plane has crashed into several buildings in north-east Philadelphia, setting homes and vehicles ablaze and injuring people on the ground.

The jet was on a medical transport mission on Friday evening and carrying four crew members, a child patient and the patient’s escort, Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, a medical aircraft company, said in a statement.

“We know that there will be loss,” Pennsylvania Gov Josh Shapiro said during a news conference at the scene of the crash, calling it an “awful aviation disaster”.

Emergency crews rushed to the evening crash scene as residents crowded streets littered with fiery debris and pieces of the aircraft.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene with people who were injured and structures ablaze.

The child on board the plane was receiving care in the US for a life-threatening condition and was returning to Tijuana, Mexico, Shai Gold, a spokesman for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, told a local NBC outlet.

The girl was accompanied by her mother, a pilot, a copilot, a doctor and a paramedic, the spokesman said.

Mr Gold told NBC the child’s treatment was sponsored by a third-partner charity.

“She fought quite a lot to survive, and unfortunately, this tragedy on the way home,” he said.

The Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia put out a notice on X for Mexican nationals affected by the incident to call a helpline.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said city officials do not know the number of fatalities, but the city is “asking for prayers for anyone and everyone that may have been affected”.

“If you see debris, call 911, don’t touch anything,” she told city residents.

The crash happened just blocks from the Roosevelt Mall, a three-storey shopping center in a densely populated part of Philadelphia, the fifth biggest city in the US.

“I thought we were getting attacked by something,” he said. As he saw people start to flee, he decided to get “outta there”.

The plane, a Learjet 55, took off from the Northeast Philadelphia Airport about 18:30 local time and crashed less than four miles (6.4km) away, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA said in a statement that the flight was en-route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. At first, the agency said two people were on the plane but later revised that to six.

According to data on FlightAware, a flight tracking website, the plane was operated by a company called Med Jets, and had arrived in Philadelphia from Florida less than four hours earlier.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating.

“So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls lost,” he said.

The plane crash comes just two days after a much larger collision happened between a commercial jet and a military helicopter in Washington DC, where officials suspect all 67 people aboard both aircraft were killed.

It was the deadliest plane crash in the US in over 20 years.
