NIE Networks says power has been restored to nearly all of its customers following Storm Darragh.

It said 15 customers still require more complex repairs but that “generators have been provided to ensure they have electricity until permanent fixes are completed”.

About 95,000 homes in Northern Ireland were without power at the height of the storm over the weekend due to the strong winds.

Several community assistance centres opened on Monday to help those still without power.

In the Republic of Ireland, about 15,000 homes, farms and businesses remain without electricity on Tuesday morning.

NIE Networks said that after power restoration efforts in Northern Ireland, it was able to “provide assistance to colleagues in ESB Networks by sending approximately 60 staff to help” with repairs.

“The energy network in the UK and Ireland have mutual arrangements in place to provide assistance in such incidents,” a spokesperson added.

“We understand the importance of mutual aid and are keen to help when possible.”

A team of 60 technicians from French power provider Enedis has also arrived in the Republic of Ireland to assist in the repair of power outages following Storm Darragh.

ESB Networks Regional Manager Brian Tapley told Irish broadcaster RTÉ that most of its affected customers will have power restored on Tuesday, but some will be without electricity for the rest of the week.

Mr Tapley said that a lot of the customers who remain without power are in more remote areas, but not all.

Stena Line and Irish Ferries cancelled several ferry crossings between Dublin and Holyhead on Monday and Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Holyhead port said that on Saturday morning during Storm Darragh, “an incident occurred at Holyhead Port causing damage to port infrastructure”.

“As a result, Holyhead Port is currently closed to marine traffic and, at this time, it is expected that the port will remain closed until 18:00 Tuesday at the earliest, while a thorough assessment is conducted,” the spokesperson added.

The government is “not ready” for the sort of extreme weather brought by Storm Darragh, the new head of the Climate Change Committee has warned.

Emma Pinchbeck, who heads the government’s independent climate advisory body said that the UK is “off track” and must do more to prepare for scenarios like flooding and intense heat.

Storm Darragh brought 96mph gusts on Saturday, with two men dying during the storm and thousands being left without power. It was the fourth serious storm to hit the UK since mid-October.

The UK government has committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050, as scientists warn the rate of extreme weather events will increase as the climate warms.

However, Pinchbeck said adaptations to homes and communities were needed immediately “regardless of what you think we should do in terms of reducing emissions”.

In her first televised interview since taking up the post of chief executive at the Climate Change Committee, she said: “We’re off track against where we should be – and that’s things like flood defences, or are our houses built on flood plains?

“In the summer are our cities ready for extreme heat? These basic things.”Pinchbeck said the UK must plan for more extreme weather events like Saturday’s storm, adding: “We have to prepare our infrastructure for it.

“We have to prepare the economy for it. We have to prepare our homes for it.”

The government’s own climate risk assessment, published in 2022, warned the impacts of a changing environment could cost the UK billions of pounds a year.

It said that efforts must be undertaken to prepare for the effects of 4C of warming, regardless of international agreements with targets to limit warming to 1.5C.Pinchbeck continued: “There are risks to our food yields, there are risks to where we can build safe homes for people, and risks to our towns and cities which are built on coastlines.

“These things are very obvious and we should be acting now to tackle them.”

Pressed on whether enough is being done to prepare for an increased rate of extreme weather events, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said that the government has already put more money into flood defences.

She also said environmental factors will be taken into consideration as ministers press ahead with plans to build 1.5m new homes across the UK over the next five years.

A number of festive events in Northern Ireland are being cancelled this weekend amid the approach of Storm Darragh. The whole island is affected by the second highest level of weather…

A number of festive events in Northern Ireland are being cancelled this weekend amid the approach of Storm Darragh. The whole island is affected by the second highest level of weather warning.

Belfast’s Christmas market is among Saturday’s closures and some other events and facilities across NI councils are closed. Flights and ferries have also been affected. An amber warning for wind, which is more severe, has been issued for Northern Ireland from 01:00 GMT on Saturday until 21:00, while some counties in the Republic of Ireland have been issued with a red warning.

A yellow warning for wind and rain came into force at 15:00 on Friday with the rain warning expiring at 12:00 on Saturday. The wind warning will stay in place until 06:00 on Sunday.

Storm Darragh is the fourth named storm of the season, following storms Ashley, Bert and Conall. The strongest winds will reach the west coast of Ireland on Friday night before moving east across the island.

The Met Office is expecting gusts around the coast of Northern Ireland to reach speeds about 80mph (130km/h) from early on Saturday morning. That is when Friday’s yellow warning will be temporarily upgraded to amber.Gusts between 60-70mph (100-115km/h) are likely inland before winds ease from the west through Saturday afternoon. The Met Office has also issued a red warning for wind for parts of Wales and the Bristol Channel area of England on Saturday.Red alerts have been issued by Met Éireann, the Republic of Ireland’s weather service, for the west coast of Ireland. The highest level of warning was issued for Mayo, Clare, Galway, Donegal, Leitrim, Wicklow and Sligo. The alerts are due to end early on Saturday morning. The second highest level of warning for wind, Status Orange is in place until 10:00 on Saturday, but a yellow warning for wind will remain in place until 15:00.ESB Networks in the Republic of Ireland is asking customers to prepare in the event of losing their electricity supply if their area is affected by Storm Darragh. This includes torches, spare batteries and having phones charged.About three million people in parts of Wales and south-west England were sent an emergency alert from the government.

Belfast City Council has said the closure of the Christmas market at city hall on Saturday would be “disappointing” but added that “the safety of our visitors and traders is of the utmost importance”.It plans to reopen on Sunday if the weather permits. One of the traders, Lisa Walsh, said it was “unfortunate because most of the traders” at the market “rely on the Saturday”.”That is really where they might make a wage for themselves,” she said.

“Yesterday was really really poor, so the general consensus in the market was that ‘sure it’ll be fine because Saturday will get us over the line’.”So, I think a lot of the traders are pretty upset.”

Thousands of people have been told to boil their tap water for another week as repairs continue at a treatment works that flooded during Storm Bert. Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water…

Thousands of people have been told to boil their tap water for another week as repairs continue at a treatment works that flooded during Storm Bert.

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water has apologised and increased its offer of compensation to affected customers and businesses.

Its chief executive said teams were working “24/7” to try to fast-track a fix to the drinking water storage tank at Tynywaun treatment works, above Treherbert in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Nearly 100 staff were involved in managing the incident, manning bottled water stations and delivering supplies to vulnerable customers, he said.

A “boil water notice” was issued to about 12,000 Rhondda households last Sunday and that has now been extended until Sunday, 8 December. It applies to residents in Blaenrhondda, Blaencwm, Tynewydd, Treherbert, Treorchy, Cwmparc, Ton Pentre, Gelli, parts of Pentre, Tonypandy and Ystrad.

Fourteen schools, two hospitals, eight care homes and 17 childminders are also being provided with alternative water supplies, via tankers or bottled water deliveries.

“We can’t serve hot drinks at the moment and when we’re preparing food we’ve got to wash the veg and salad in boiled or bottled water,” said Victoria Vickery, of Only Crumbs sandwich shop in Treorchy.

“It’s taking time and obviously it’s affecting us money-wise,” she said.

On the high street, Janice Cook, out shopping, said it was “terrible” having to keep boiling water at home.”You forget sometimes and then think ‘oh, I better not use that now’ – it’s hard work,” she added.

“I won’t touch my tap,” said Ann Clarke, but added that Welsh Water had been delivering bottled water to her house as she was classed as a vulnerable customer – which was “marvellous”.

Rhys Richards, a teacher, said it was “certainly inconvenient and less than ideal at this time of year with Christmas on the horizon”.

He felt Welsh Water had been clear with it messaging and communication – “but let’s hope they can sort it soon.”

In a letter to residents, Welsh Water chief executive Peter Perry said the weather gauge at Tynywaun had measured “the second highest rainfall in the UK last Saturday and Sunday”.

“This resulted in a significant amount of flooding (at the treatment works) and surface water running from the hill onto the drinking water storage tank and impacting the tank.”

Mr Perry said the required fix to reseal the tank would usually take “over a month”, but staff were working “flat out” to try to get it done in two weeks.

Ongoing rainfall had hampered efforts, as dry conditions were needed to lay protective membranes, he added.

“We understand the inconvenience this has caused for customers… and we’ll do all we can to bring that boil notice off as quickly as possible.”

A further £100 is now being offered to affected households, on top of £150 already pledged, while businesses will be offered a total of £500.

Meanwhile, Rhondda Cynon Taf council is offering a £1,000 grant for affected businesses and residents, and it said on Thursday that 192 applications had been received so far.

The council said that about 249 properties were hit by flooding inside their premises due to Storm Bert.

A further 140 resident and business properties have been flooded across Caerphilly, according to the council.

Elsewhere, Powys council have confirmed that 16 properties have suffered flood damage. Powys does not currently have a financial assistance scheme, but is seeking support from the Welsh government, and anyone hit by flooding can apply for council tax relief.

Welsh Water said it had spent months preparing for winter pressures, after a series of critical reports by regulators about its overall performance in recent years. In October, the firm was ordered to pay a £24.1m penalty by Ofwat, and was one of only three water companies in Wales and England to be classed as “lagging”.

The water industry’s regulator criticised performance in areas like tackling supply interruptions, mains repairs, leakage and pollution incidents.

Its environmental credentials have also been repeatedly downgraded by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) – going from a four star rating (industry leading) to two (requires improvement).

Kit Wilson of Welsh Water said current scrutiny of the sector brought “even more importance” to how the firm manages the colder, wetter months ahead.

“Winter is when we see the most impacts to our network, and that’s becoming even more prevalent as the impacts of climate change grow stronger and stronger,” he said.

Asked why customers should have faith in the firm’s preparations, Mr Wilson said it was “always disappointing when we as a company don’t meet the expectations of our customers or our regulators”.

“However we have a really ambitious investment programme planned for the next five years, which will invest a huge amount of money – over £4bn – into our network.”

“We really think this will be a step change and start to change some of those perceptions,” he said.

A railway station which was shut due to flooding brought by heavy rainfall amid Storm Bert has reopened.

Great Western Railway (GWR) confirmed Newbury Station was now fully open after work to clear platform 1 was completed.

Commuters were warned earlier in the week of lengthy delays after tracks and a platform were submerged at the station in Berkshire.

A Thames Water spokesperson said “excess sewage water” at the station occurred despite its “proactive measures”.

“This follows Storm Bert and heavy rainfall earlier this week, which led to sewer flooding at the station,” the spokesperson continued.

“Unfortunately this occurred despite having put proactive measures in place, including having three tankers on the ground to pump away excess water since 23 November.”

Two men have died as torrential rains and gale-force winds cause flooding and damage across Greece.

More than 30cm of rain was reported to have fallen on the island of Rhodes – one of the first areas to be impacted by Storm Bora – since Saturday.

The deaths occurred on the island of Lemnos where flooding damaged roads and buildings and residents were asked to evacuate their homes, amid fears that a dam could overflow.

Damage has also been reported in Greece’s second-largest city of Thessaloniki on the mainland, with the rain and storms likely to affect the majority of the country in the hours to come, the National Meteorological Service of Greece said.

On Lemnos, the rural road network linking the villages of Kontias with Thanos and Agios Dimitris has been completely destroyed.

A 70-year-old man in Kontias died when he fell over as he tried to clear up his house. A 57-year-old farmer was found dead by firefighters after being reported missing by his family near a flooded dam close to the village.

According to police sources, he drowned after being swept away by rushing waters while trying to free his car, which had become stuck in mud within a stream.

Residents in Kontias were asked to evacuate their homes as there is a fear that the dam will overflow. The situation on Rhodes was described as “dramatic” by residents.

A 24-hour ban on vehicle movement on the road network has been imposed on the island.

During the night, several people were trapped by rushing waters, after many roads became flooded.

The regional governor of Southern Aegean, Giorgos Hatzimarkos, said Rhodes had sustained “enormous damage”.

Many roads on the island are impassable, while bridges have collapsed in the Kallithea-Faliraki area.

The Mayor of Rhodes, Alexandros Koliadis, has submitted a request to the Greek government to declare the island as being in a state of emergency.

In Thessaloniki, the civil protection department has called on residents in the Pylaia and Chortiatis areas to limit their movements because of gale-force winds – gusts have reached more than 80km/h (50mph).

There have been power cuts in the area after strong winds and falling trees caused damage to the electricity grid. Power outages have also led to delays on the Thessaloniki-Athens railway line.

Meanwhile, a cargo ship moored in the port of Thessaloniki was swept away in the high winds, leading to a collision with another cargo ship, and damage to both vessels.

Forecasters say Storm Bora is likely to affect many parts of Greece until early on Tuesday.

In the coming hours, the conditions are expected to hit the northern Aegean region, central Macedonia, parts of Halkidiki, the prefecture of Thessaloniki, Imathia, Pieria, Thessaly and Larissa.

Huge flooding caused by heavy rain in Malaysia and neighbouring Thailand has killed at least 12 people, officials say.

More than 122,000 people have been forced out of their homes in northern Malaysia, while in southern Thailand, around 13,000 others have also been displaced.

There are fears the number could rise, as heavy rain and storm warnings remain in place.

Emergency services personnel have been deployed to help rescue stranded residents and shelters are being provided.

The flooding, which began earlier in the week, has seen thousands of residents evacuated in both nations.

Videos on social media and local news show cars and houses submerged, and people wading through waist-deep water.

One video, filmed in Thailand’s Sateng Nok district, showed rescuers carrying a baby out from a roof of a flooded home.

Flooding has impacted nearly 534,000 households in southern Thailand, disaster officials said, and two hospitals had to close to prevent floodwaters from damaging medical facilities.

Six provinces have declared a disaster due to the floods.

The government has designated 50 million baht ($1.7m; £1.3m) in flood relief for each province, with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra saying the goal is to “restore normalcy as quickly as possible”.

In Malaysia, the flooding is mostly concentrated on the north-eastern state of Kelantan, which borders Thailand.

There, the National Disaster Management Agency says the evacuees account for 63% of the total number.

One resident in the town of Pasir Puteh in Kelantan said her area had been flooded since Wednesday.

“The water has already reached my house corridor and is just two inches away from coming inside,” Zamrah Majid told AFP news agency.

Another resident of the same town said he and his family have been isolated by the floods.

“There’s no way in or out of for any vehicles to enter my neighbourhood,” Muhammad Zulkarnain told AFP.

Another eight states in Malaysia have also been affected.

So far, the number of those displaced surpasses that of 2014, which saw one of the worst floods in the country.

Provisions for disaster management have been sent to Terengganu and Kelantan State Governments, according to the prime minister’s office.

On Friday, he barred his cabinet members from going on leave so they can focus on the disaster.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department warned that heavy rains will continue until Sunday in some states, while its Thai counterpart warned that “very heavy rain” could continue through next week.

Both countries experience monsoon rains around this time of the year, and flooding isn’t uncommon.

In 2021, Malaysia faced some of its worse flooding in decades, which killed at least 14 people.

Ten years earlier, in 2011, widespread flooding across Thailand killed at least 500 people and damaged millions of homes.

Heavy snowfall in South Korea has disrupted flights and ferries and killed at least three people. The country grappled with its second day of record snow on Thursday, with the authorities reporting that three people had died in Gyeonggi province, where the capital, Seoul, is located.

One person died when a golf practice net loaded with snow collapsed in the city of Pyeongtaek, while another was struck by a falling tree in the city of Yongin, according to the Yonhap news agency. On Wednesday evening, police reported that 11 people were injured in a 53-vehicle pile-up on a highway in the central city of Wonju in Gangwon province in the east of the country. It was unclear whether the accident had caused any deaths. On Thursday, up to 40cm (15.7 inches) of snow had piled up in parts of Seoul by 11am (02:00 GMT), the Interior Ministry said, adding that 156 flights were cancelled and 104 ferry services disrupted.

Passengers at Seoul’s main airport, Incheon, faced delays of two hours on average on Thursday, with 14 percent of flights delayed and 15 percent cancelled, plane tracking website Flightradar24 showed.

The second day of snow prompted the city government to deploy 11,000 personnel and 20,000 pieces of equipment for snow removal operations in the capital.Schools in Gyeonggi received permission to close on Thursday if needed, provincial authorities said.Seoul on Wednesday recorded its heaviest November snowfall since records began more than a century ago, according to the country’s weather agency.Authorities reported 131 temporary power outages, with 46 restored by the end of Wednesday.

The unusually heavy November snow has been attributed to the warmer-than-usual temperatures of seawaters west of the Korean Peninsula encountering currents of cold air.Neighbouring North Korea has also received more than 10cm (4 inches) of snow in some areas between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to state broadcaster Korean Central Television.
